The british intentionally structured post-revolutionary canada to be without a distinct culture so that they wouldn't have to deal with yet another rebellion. I don't wanna be harsh on canadians, but their whole country was designed to not have a distinct culture, national ethos nor literary tradition. To this effect, Shakespeare is what canadians are supposed to say is their greatest literary accomplishment. It is quite funny that Canadians are so bereft of literature that Handmaid’s Tale is trotted out as one of their most acclaimed works. German lit has Goethe and Kafka, France has Balzac and Celine, Russia has Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, America has Faulkner and Hemingway…and this is what Canada has.
