I think what also sunk The Exorcist III was simply being called... The Exorcist III.
Given the awful reputation of the second movie, simply calling the third movie The Exorcist III implied some sort of official acknowledgement of the second one, that it was "canon" even if the movie itself turned out to completely ignore it.
Why they didn't call the movie "The Exorcist: Legion" or "Legion: The Exorcist" or something inspired by the original novel sequel's title is a head scratcher, but for whatever reason back in the day Hollywood felt like sequels just had to have numbers in the title.
There's been something of a renaissance but nothing on the level of a cultural event like The Exorcist was, as they point out in the video the last movie to do that was The Blair Witch Project and nothing has came close in the 20 years since that movie.
Indies like Hereditary/Midommsar might get a lot of attention within filmbuff fandom, but how much money do they make compared to a Conjuring* sequel/spinoff or something like that?
*I saw the first Conjuring and it was ok, but nothing great, I really kind hate all of the loud noises in modern horror movies like that, it's irritating, not scary.

There's been a turn around in horror as of late but it lies with the Indies like Get Out and Hereditary/Midommsar.
