I'm surprised its taken people this long to actually hunt the RLM guys down. You have literal kidnapping and rape jokes in the original Plinkett reviews and of course the character of Plinkett originates from a (honestly pretty disturbing) sketch where he jerks off to the Olsen Twins. Compared to that madness them pointing out that there's corporate mandated diversity in The Force Awakens sounds pretty tame by comparison. Or that Rich Evans rightfully thinks that getting out and protesting is a big stupid waste of time.

The had a literal SJW gag in one Half in the Bag episode though so I figure people used to complain about this shit in the past. I'm waiting for the inevitable shitstorm when these people finds that CGP Grey video where he praises them and some kind of huge witch hunt erupts as people start trying to hunt him and everyone he's ever interacted with down.

The Plinkett stuff was just typical edgelord humor of the late 2000s and early 2010s though.

It was also self deprecating humor too, basically saying "this is the kind of weirdo you'd have to be to make hours long reviews of Star Trek and Star Wars movies" as a clever way to dodge criticism of being too pretentious or taking it too seriously.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mike's Plinkett voice spoofing Ted Levine's voice from Silence of The Lambs and Joyride? I swear I heard that somewhere.

Well yeah but these people never understand nuance or humor at all. I figured they would have been dogpiled early on, not now at this late stage. Especially over some random comment Rich made on Pre:Rec three damn years ago.

I'm surprised they didn't make an effort to crucify Rich Evans for half-jokingly telling people to vote for Trump during one of the 2016 Previously Recorded streams because he got tired of stream donators continually prodding him to reveal his political opinions. I think that incident predates all the other "problematic footage" they cite in that post.

the whole clip is much more fun than just vote trump...

RLM is way more hateful than that hilarious Cold Pockets image, so what use is it?

Wasn't that massive post detailing the evil of RLM written by a guy with whose avatar references Mad Max? And not just any Mad Max, but Mel Motherfuckin' Gibson? That's gotta be a dogwhistle!

15 years ago, I wanted to go to Comic Con. You couldn't pay me to go now. Mike and Jay perfectly explained why in every way.

I really do maintain that Twilight ruined Comic Con. I don't even know why they call it Comic Con anymore. It's hardly about comic books these days. It's hardly even about comic book-related media these days. It's about all of pop culture and the next franchise that Hollywood wants to pimp out. Twilight was the catalyst for that. Fucking hell.

So, the thing about that: The reason why any "controversy" about their brand of humor hasn't blown up is because they haven't apologized for it.

The second any of them cave in and apologize, they're done for. Because we all know that SJWs are never satisfied with apologies.

I was originally thinking that they haven't been in hot water over it because they aren't the biggest YouTube channel ... But almost everybody has seen those Plinkett reviews of the Star Wars Prequels, even people from Hollywood have seen them. When I think about it, I'm kind of surprised that some corporate prick from Disney hasn't tried to manufacture a controversy, lol.

Maybe their hate makes RLM stronger?

Mike DOES sound just like the emperor too...

I do love Jay morphing into Rich for the Picard trailer bit.
They mention a theory that the Chosen One (tm) chick could be Seven and Chakotay's daughter and all I could think about was how if this is true, every single Janeway/Chakotay shippers, who have been held up by the EU novels, fanfiction and the earlier deep subtext episodes, are going to drop this shit the moment it's revealed.

Eh, Comic Con was already trending to become a movie/tv expo, before "twilight"...

They should just rebrand the whole thing. But, considering that comic conventions are dying as a whole: perhaps comic collectors/enthusiasts can still piggyback on it anyways...

Comic Con died when the fake geeks took over the pop culture.

I guess it depends of who they're making fun of. I know that the Star Trek subreddits (general and Discovery) have been in panic mode since RLM made that 3-minute parody of STD. Some mods or admins wanted to shadowban people and delete any links to RLM by fear of "toxic" comments in regards to the actual show.

Are you fucking serious? If that's true, that's hilarious. Mike Stoklasa will have officially ascended to God-Emperor of Star Trek if people are so afraid of his opinions that they freaked out over a really tame parody video.

Oh, I saw early signs of it before Twilight ... But I think that Twilight was the thing that pushed it over into "Corporate TV/Movie Expo."

I remember reading the absolute (justifiable) SALT in several geek forums back when Twilight took over Comic Con back in 2009/2010. There were so many people that were there for Twilight that it ruined the entire convention for everyone else. Twihards would show up to panels that were happening before the Twilight-related panels (because they wanted to secure spots for the Twilight panels), which prevented many geeks from attending the panels they actually wanted to go to. And the geeks who were actually able to go to the panels had to deal with Twihards talking over everything the entire time because they were just there waiting for Twilight. Shit was a disaster.

This is exactly it. Though not necessarily fake geeks. Nerd culture just turned into pop culture. But, eventually this will change too...

I do remember as a child going to a comic book convention in NYC. It was so different: nothing but disgusting obese men trading comics, artists alley, and some meet and greets. That was it....

It started to change with cosplayers, I think. Not sure when that started, but it predates the mainstream wave....

Maybe Star Trek conventions? Then it just kinda transitioned into comic book stuff?

By "fake geek" I mean TBBT, the type of people who only care about the brand and not the actual content. It's like the "I fucking Love Science" type.

Yep. Most big Star Trek websites or forums seem to be eager to defend the JJ movies and the current Kurtzman stuff. On Trekmovie they jump at you in the comments section if you say something negative. I don't know many places where you can still be critical of the current state of Star Trek. The subreddit for example deleted many threads pointing out the writing of a particular scene involving an obese character winning a marathon in an episode of STD.

Eh. that defines a subset of sperg hardcore fans too, who will eat whatever crap is funneled to them as well.

When I think "fake geek" its someone caught up in the cultural zeitgeist. They try too hard to "keep up with the joneses."...

As soon as it is no longer heavily marketed, they lose interest....

Nerds unironically deserved Twilight. It held a mirror up to every single antisocial person obessed with some fictional property. Not the story itself, which is fucking garbage, but the way the fans acted. I became a lot more discerning after Twilight came into existence because it actually freaked me the fuck out how much it seemed to just warp people's minds. Every male friend I had at the time had some excuse about how they were dragged along by someone in their lives to go see the movies. Some guys I knew claimed their relatives dragged them along which I find fucking extremely creepy and uncomfortable. One guy I knew bought the first two novels new and read all the way through them, with the excuse of "I just wanted to see what all of the fuss was about."

I could barely sit through clips making fun of the movie because the footage was just so grey and ugly. It actually made me re-evaluate my life and think "Is this what I look like and sound like when I nerd out about the dumb bullshit I like?" It really disillusioned me with "nerd" culture altogether and made me shut up about a lot of the stuff I like just because I really didn't want to be that person. On the topic of RLM, I watch their parodies like The Nerd Crew in just silent horror since I could have been one of those "lol I'm so nerdy SKREEE" types.

Very cool.

Twilight's only real crime is being dull, but that's just a by-product of being a female-driven story. At its core, Twilight is no different than Anne Rice's or Charlaine Harris's vampire novels. It just has a midwestern veneer instead of a Victorian or southern one.

I think its crime was being so bland and generic and emo that it just somehow appealed to everyone. Everyone I knew had at least seen the movie and quite a few people I knew read the books even though they protested that they still thought the whole thing was stupid. It was a certified epidemic and I thought I had actually gone insane because everyone was fucking talking about it. I was definitely a way bigger asshole by the time other all-consuming pop culture cults like Bronies and Star Wars Hype rolled around. I wouldn't even classify these people as "fake" nerds. They're the real deal, they just seem to lack the context that being overly obessive about franchises is a bad thing.

I'm definitely not the first person to notice this though. Apparently it used to be even more insane back in the day. Harlan Ellison's essay Xenogenesis is probably the most famous work detailing the shitty behavior of nerds, concluding with that incident where someone lunatic threw a cup of warm vomit at Alan Dean Foster. Even further back you have those stories of Arthur Conan Doyle being harassed and having "Murderer!" screamed at him on the streets because he had the audacity to kill off Sherlock Holmes. Nerd obession causing insane behavior is a pretty deep rabbit hole and I'm glad Twilight made me peer into it before I did something stupid.
