I can't think of any other company (even fly by night ones) that had as much drama attached. I know you're being facetious but the absolute closest I can think of is No Shame. No Shame used to exclusively release Italian genre movies until they went out of business. They came back by re-branding themselves as One Seven Films and just released bootlegs without paying the licensors. Their release of Alien From the Deep is on this episode:

and where do people draw the line on real life crime in movies? at nothing. The whitey bulger and the boston marathon movie came out two years apart from each other and played in the area the events happened in.

I imagine it could be more about the tone and goals of the movies. Turning a real life tragic situation into a fictional supernatural horror deal in a place where people effected by the real thing are still around could be kind of offensive, compare that to a movie about a real life tragic situation where it tries to accurately show events that happened or dramatizes to make a point of showing a community banding together or showing the resilience and determination of the survivors.
