I like that Jay keeps complaining about the look of contemporary horror movies. I said it and I'll say it again: they look ATROCIOUS. Look at this guy - he's ON FIRE and the room is almost completely dark. This is the modern day for night, except it's in 70% of movies. Most of them are horror, but this fad is not exclusively to that genre, unfortunately.

Below are screenshots from Wolf Man (2025). Yep, not gonna watch that.

Takeaway from the last BOTW was that even trash like The Big Sweat is more pleasant to watch than most major pictures I've gone to see in theaters (visually at least), film is pretty much a cheat code.

I'm guessing they do this because people watch things on their phones in the dark (or on a TV in a dark room whilst they make out with their Tinder date on the sofa)?

Nah, I think people who color grade modern movies have become too compelled to move those adjustment sliders waaay down and they got so used to it that they don't see the problem anymore. They're like an anorexic woman who looks in the mirror and thinks she's not thin enough - it's become a pathological, subconscious problem. I think people who watch whole movies on phones are a minority and sitting in a dark room doesn't help much with how dark those movies are. You know what's the absolute worst? It's when the movie is dark AND tinted yellow/orange.

Even some old media shot on film had this problem when the DP would restrict the lighting to a ridiculous extent. The later seasons of The X-Files were guilty of that. Ceiling lights rarely turned on. Lots of dim wall lamps. Table lamps put on floors to just barely illuminate the walls. Dialogue scenes where only part of the actor's face is visible. Who the hell enjoys that?

So what movies have you all watched after seeing them featured on Best of the Worst?

For me, it's Fantastic Four (which IS pretty great), The Barbarians, and Infested... I don't really know why...
I've never actively sought out one of those movies after the fact, but I've always loved shitty and obscure horror movies, so I had a few favorites going into the episodes. Robot Jox, Chopping Mall, ROTOR, Gymkata, Elves, Yor, The Pit, and Roar were my stand outs.

It really deserves emphasis that there’s nothing inherently scary about mummies. It’s just an exotic burial custom that was considered novel when Victorians were adventuring in Egypt.
Don’t forget about the “curse”.

8-12 people related to discovering Tut’s tomb discovery died within a few years.

Mummies can absolutely be scary, depending on the type. Have you ever heard of the cholera mummies in Mexico? They’re mummies from the 1800’s-1900’s, mostly people who died of cholera and their bodies lost all their water so they look like paper-mache skeletons with horrible screaming expressions stuck on their faces. They were dug up ‘cuz the living were expected to pay a tax on graves, and when they didn’t, they disinterred the bodies. Imagine what kind of horror movie you could base off that premise!

(I won’t post pics of the mummies, cuz they’re creepy and it would feel disrespectful to me, but you can easily find ‘em on Google!)

Ice Pirates, mostly cause of Ron Perlman even though hes basically a background character for a majority of the movie. From what I remember having watched it with friends a few years ago now, it was a surprisingly fun movie.

Edit, it was on Re:View Im a dummy

Not necessarily AFTER seeing them on BOTW. Doesn't really matter. I'm reposting a list of some of the ones I enjoyed:

American Rickshaw
Avenging Force
Back In Action
Barbarians
Cyborg
Demons At The Door (yep)
LA Wars
New York Ninja
Nightmare At Noon
Unmasking The Idol

I'm going to watch Enemy Territory soon because it came out on Blu-ray recently. The release they discussed looked like absolute dogshit.

Wow the 4K really captures how drunk Jan-Michael Vincent is!

I’ve watched most of Leo Fong’s movies because of RLM, they’re a lot of fun.

I picked up Hard Ticket to Hawaii and Malibu Express, the latter not because of the show but because of Andy Sedaris. Hard Ticket is genuinely great, but Malibu Express was kind of disappointing. Thinking of grabbing a copy of Raw Force at some point.

I saw Malibu Express a few weeks ago as well. It's the roughest of the ones I saw, probably because it's the first one using his trademark formula. It looks significantly worse than Hard Ticket, too. It has so much nudity you get tired of it. I still have six Sidaris movies to watch, but I don't want to binge them since they're all very similar. Day Of The Warrior is OK. Buff Bagwell from WCW is in it as one of the main villains

Raw Force is an odd mix of lots of different things. There's martial arts, tits, a boat trip, a tropical island, Cameron Mitchell, zombies, cannibals... it's hard to describe to someone who's never seen it. Anyway, I would say it's worth a watch.

he's ON FIRE and the room is almost completely dark.
That's because the fire is CG.
A real flame would light up the room real nice but to do that, they would have to plan everything out, rehearse, set some guy on fire etc.
This is hard work, dude, ain't no modern Hollywood hack doing it.

I got fooled into thinking that Leigh Whannel is a good writer/director because he made Upgrade in 2018 and that movie kicks ass.
However, you look at his track record and none of his other movies are good. Upgrade was a fluke.
Even the 1st Saw, on which he was the writer and lead actor, has a ton of stupid shit in the script, it doesn't really hold up (Danny Glover's character is a fucking retard and his "arc" is pathetic).

The only good thing about The Wolfman 2025 are the "werewolf vision" shots, where we see how he sees the world.
It's a really nice visual and we get the only creepy scene during one of those shots.

There you go, I just saved you 100 minutes of your time, you saw everything good about this movie.

The darkness problem is really so bad. Even Se7en, one of the 'darkest' movies ever made had great use of lighting. If things were ever darkened much you still had highlights that would direct your eyes to the important areas. Even No Country for Old Men is well lit almost the entire time. You just don't have to make thrillers or horror movie dark. Now even all the romcoms and light movies are a mess.
