I'll give Rich this, he said that they should've used a tribe name like 'Cherokee'. Even then that probably would've made more sense. And they did admit that in 300 years+ 'native American' would've been a dumb name, which undermined their entire bitch fest anyway on this subject.

Sometimes these guys act like Marzgurl level of complaining about woke 'slurs' and naming everything just right in current year.

Yeah tribal names are always the best compromise, especially when you're talking about a specific person.

If these guys are going to really split hairs and nitpick about what is and isn't problematic, they ought to stay consistent.

Chakotay in particular is really funny because Robert Beltran is a Mexican and didn't know anything about Native culture or tradition, and as somebody else stated, the guy they had consulting was a total huckster, too.

And also, they want to harangue on political correctness and cultural sensitivity, how about correct racial casting. E.g. Beltran as Chakotay; Garrett Wang (Harry Kim), Taiwanese, not Korean; Rosalind Chao (Keiko O'Brien) Chinese, not Japanese; John Cho (Sulu), Korean, not Japanese, etc etc etc.

Like dude, I wish theyd just shut up and talk about the fucking show instead of qualifying everything.

You know what shocked me about him? That he was the Mexican dude in Night of the Comet.........

Hell, they had a Yugoslavian dirt farmer play an android!

It took them barely 20 minutes before the Le Atheist Enlightened by my Intelligence started. Fuck I hate it when they're Le Smug.
It's always especially amusing when someone at the peak of "Mount Stupid" of the Dunning-Kruger graph decides to get smug. Mike is often the worst offender -- there have been multiple occasions where he confidently but incorrectly corrected the others, but the rest have been guilty as well -- on all sorts of topics. It seems most egregious when they talk about religion, though. They just sound like moody teenagers who are grumpy that their parents are making them get up early to go to Sunday services.

If leaks are correct. Starfleet Academy ratings might be worse than Mike reported. I find it noteworthy that Red Letter Media appears to be less protective of the new Star Trek franchise in comparison to their stance on Disney's Star Wars.

It's amazing how Mike and MovieBob are two opposite sides of nerd culture. Mike is cynical and amused by how pathetic and transparent the entertainment industry is nowadays, while Bob fully buys into it, and is still in the mindset that being a nerd makes you a minority of some kind. Somehow he feels entitled to the fruits of progress to which he himself contributes very little.

Academy was so bad I don't even think they got the hate watchers like the rest of nu-Trek got. At least Star Wars occasionally spits out something watchable, nu-Trek is actively shitting on it's lore at every opportunity it gets.

What interesting that Mike and Bob generally share similar political views. Additionally, Rich suggested support for the United Nations establishing a Ministry of Truth, as depicted in "Captain America: Civil War," which aligns with Bob's position on the matter.

I remain convinced that among the Nu-Trek series, the only one with comparable viewership is Lower Decks, which Is just Rick and Morty Star Trek.

I really can't think of any good Star Wars of any type since about halfway through Mando season 2. I keep hearing how great Andor was but I was bored out my mind after 3 eps and just gave up. At least even the worst (Except those damn Vespas in Boba Fett) mostly look in-universe. This Trek stuff is actively repulsive to look at, from the characters to the ships to the bridges.

I wonder if they're even going to bother with a Mando/Grogu review at all. Really doubt we'll get a full Plinkett on it. I'm not even going to watch it for free unless it somehow gets absolutely rave reviews by real humans.

Geordi is african-american (so west african) and not Somali. Warp drive is like bananas and rice.

Trek was a slow decline ever since Enterprise left the airwaves. Mainly though, I think for the most part, every "era" or cast of characters mostly had their own definitive ending to their arcs or stories. Of course, there's Generations, Nemesis, Picard, etc, but those can be ignored, one can still watch TNG or TOS and have a satisfying, self contained experience.

Star Wars though was effectively and suddenly murdered overnight. Making the entire EU noncanonical, bastardizing all of the existing characters, replacing everything about its identity with the cheap plastic Disney version of itself, etc. That was almost thirty years of lore and stories and fan curated culture that was suddenly swept aside for what Disney suddenly declared Star Wars to actually be.

And most importantly, they took what was a satisfying, closed ending (ROTJ), and made a spectacle out of bastardizing the characters and undoing their development. Effectively it was declaring that what those characters had endured throughout the OT didn't matter at all.

IMO, the murder of Star Wars is far more painful and egregious, but at the end of the day the ruination of these properties doesn't really negate the original work.

There's still a fandom and a community for Trek, whether it's TOS or Berman era. Can't say the same about Star Wars. Closest I can think of are people who are into the prequel trilogy, but even that's tainted by Filoni's OC DONUT STEEL malarkey.

You're missing out with Andor. Gilroy's stuff (Rogue One and Andor) are the only things to come out of Nuwars that I enjoy at all, and for me are the only things that actually look and feel like Star Wars since Disney bought it.

Even Mando, Booba Feet, etc, look like garbo, and that's thanks to them insisting on using the Volume technology for everything, and also the shitty cosplay tier costumes. Wait, actually, that's a disservice to cosplayers. I've seen cosplay that looks better than the wardrobe for Nuwars.

It's actually well over thirty. Disney bought Star Wars in 2012; the earliest EU material showed up right in 1978 with Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was originally meant as a possible sequel if the budget got slashed (hence all the action taking place on a foggy planet).

It's one of the most egregious acts of creative hubris in modern entertainment, especially considering they apparently had no plans at the time to make up for it.

Splinter is a fun read now, since it was written before the revelation that Luke and Leia are brother and sister.

I have to be honest, Mike assuming that Kim from Voyager was gay because he was faithful to a girl back home seems like a projection. I’ve heard similar reasoning from guys in open relationships.

I have no problem ignoring everything after Enterprise. Even if it means I miss out on Lower Decks. I’m OK with that.
