im pretty sure they are well aware that there are die hard star wars fans out there. i dont think the problem is they are engage in trek vs star wars fan boy ism as this guy implies int eh second pic. instead i think it is simply they dont care about anything star wars outside the original trilogy at all, and just feel that since it is such a huge thing they kind of have to talk about it.

and i cant really blame them.star wars is so huge part of modern culture, and any movie review channel kind of has to touch it. as for not caring, im basically in the same boat. the original trilogy, KOTOR 1 and 2, dark forces, and shadows of the empire are the only things ive ever cared for when it comes to star wars. the rest of it can go into the trash.

note: this is all said form the perspective of someone who hasnt watched their acolyte review and has zero interest in ever doing so. im going based on what i know of RLM and what ive seen of people talking about their review.

RLM has never made it a secret that they despise Star Wars fans and Star Wars *the franchise* in general.

I mean they did that whole video mocking the wiki and also destroyed all those action figures just to laugh at fanboys losing their shit FFS

See, that stuff came across as funny to me. I have absolutely no qualms or issues with them being entirely "checked out" of Star Wars. Dude, that's where I've been since 2017 in regards to Star Wars too. There's no reason to rage over people destroying old, beat up, and germ-ridden Star Wars figures with zero value to them. lol.

And perhaps it's because I'm getting older, but while I totally understand the appeal of collecting stuff you are a fan of (so no hate there), at the end of the day ... It's just stuff.

The Acolyte video was where I thought they were being self-important hypocrites. Seriously, the "starving kids in Africa" bit was just insanely off-putting and overtly preachy to me; really showed me that they are far up their own asses. They can be cheeky a-holes all they want, but they should at least continue to be funny while doing so, and the Acolyte video just wasn't it.

Awww yeah boys!

But they don’t have to talk about it, that’s the thing. That’s a choice they make to engage with what they don’t enjoy (making them hypocrites twice based on Mike’s prescription of don’t like don’t watch).

Their channel is so stable, and they have such a supportive audience they can watch what they want. Look at The Batman. It’s a meme they won’t review it, but they’ve stated many times they’re tired of cape shit. (Me too)

I personally don’t like Star Wars, so I can’t get mad at them for what I myself dont enjoy, but them talking about it for clicks/attention makes them worse than even the most spergy thumbnailer to me. At least they love that crap.

The Friday the 13th one is another comfort vid for me, but it is shocking how it's Jay that carries the whole thing despite being just a guest that isnt into video games at all. Talked about movies, geeked over how well the game represented the series, and was genuinely into playing it despite kinda sucking at it.
The sincere enjoyment (or utter bafflement) that people who don't play video games often can have playing or watching someone play can be really entertaining, if not heartwarming. Least in my cold, dead opinion.

Yeah I don't really think it's as simple as "they're Trekkies who hate Star Wars" because Mike and Rich spent an entire review series watching Picard much to their mutual consternation until season 3 at least activated enough memberberries morphine to pacify the two into a nice, acceptable coma. Also that's basically all the shit you need from Star Wars, with the addition of like Rogue Squadron and Battlefront 2.

The Salt Vampire video helps wash the horrible aftertaste the Acolyte video out of my mouth a bit. I like RLM best when they're in their element.

RLM is better to me when they're handling odd little niches and subjects like the Wookiepedia video where they were baffled and amused by the weird bits of backstory and as I've said I preferred Best of the Worst over Half in the Bag, tackling all sorts of B-movies and odd productions for the home video market.

Personally, I just find it super hypocritical of them to advise people to not hatewatch something. Like, in general I agree with that stance. I've dropped so many shows, games, anime etc because they started sucking but I don't think they can advise that when they watched all of Star Trek Discovery and all of Star Trek Picard while having nothing nice to say about either basically. Their whole channel is quite literally built off the back of shitting on the SW prequels, Nu-Trek and other terrible films. Stuff they clearly hatewatched and didn't enjoy.

So really, what makes them any different from people like Drinker, Mauler, EFAP or any nerd ragebait channel in that regard? Really the only difference is RLM is perceived to be on the "right side" of this gay little culture war that's infested all of my hobbies. I'm sure that will change at some point since the left side of the Culture War will flip on you on a dime but regardless.

Love RLM but wish they'd just stay away from Star Wars now. They clearly have 0 love for the franchise and it really shows with that fuckin Acolyte video.

I just got wind of the apparent shit RLM decided to stir, can someone give me a TLDR? Skimming through highlights didn't help much.

TLDR: Enlightened centrism.
Slightly longer: People who rose to fame criticizing SW are mad that literal whos criticise Nu Wars. Claim that both sides are valid despite one side being multi billion dollar corporations while the other side make angry rant video on YouTube.

I think what they're trying to say is that you probably shouldn't go out of your way to watch shows that you care nothing for and realize will probably just upset you. However, it's a little bit different when it's something like your sports team having a rough season. You're still going to tune in to all of the games even though watching them is largely going to be upsetting. I watched every episode of Rings of Power even though I thought it was an absolute abortion even after the first episodes. After a certain point it was enough of a trainwreck to be entertaining in that way, but if I wasn't a big fan of Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's work I probably wouldn't have stuck through to the end.

If someone has a YouTube channel that has nothing but videos of things that they hate, they're probably finding things to upset them because that's the audience that they've built for themselves. RLM isn't afraid to give their own opinions about what they don't like, but they spend a lot of time talking about films they've enjoyed or even watching b-movies to find the occasional gem in the rough. Personally, I enjoy their content better when they're talking about something they liked, but if someone wants to do a deeper analysis of why something failed, that can certainly be appealing as well. For example, I really enjoyed this particular 8-part dissection of Rings of Power.

RLM picking apart Star Trek is nothing new either. Most people only remember them from when the Star Wars Plinkett review blew up on the internet, but before making the Phantom Menace review, they had actually made similar reviews for the TNG movies. Of course, Star Trek was a lot less popular so far fewer people cared that those movies were crap as far as fans of the show were concerned. When they talk about Discovery or Picard, they actually put effort into the criticism and back up their opinions with evidence, but with Star Wars it's clear that they don't care. That perspective can be valuable to someone like me who doesn't really give a fuck about Star Wars or anything that happened with it after the original trilogy to the point where I care how bad the writers fucked something up, but might watch a show if it's good despite that.

Star Trek is their home team though and they're going to show up to watch, even if it's a rough season. When the team isn't doing well, naturally the discussion turns what isn't working, what needs to be fixed, etc. I think they're just a bit put off that it's somewhat popular to shit on something that you don't care about either because it's popular and gets clicks, in much the same way that they mocked channels that were talking about how great some show or movie was when none of the people there actually cared about it.

Rings of Power.
w/r/t the Galadriel [?] suffering muh consequences part, the critic forgot one thing: shitty cliffhangers wherein the hero turned out to be fine inexplicably at the bottom of a sheer cliff drop [as opposed to an ocean dive] the week before have been a staple of crappy Hollywood serials since the penny arcade days. I know it's tempting to lump that in with the wahmen thing he hates, but it is, in fact, distinct.

Patreon Update:

Hi everyone! We just shot a new Best of the Worst that may have the most amazing ending in the history of the show. It's an event so amazing that some people will doubt it's real and not staged but it was 100% real. We probably shouldn't build it up so much because it won't be as amazing to anyone else as it was to us in the moment. But hey, speaking of things being built up too much, we're also planning to do a Half in the Bag for Longlegs! That's not a critique of Longlegs since we haven't seen it yet but it's been touted as THE SCARIEST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF ALL TIME for like the last two months. I guess we'll see! Coming soon!

What I liked about Faerie Tale Theatre is that they didn't try to censor the original themes of the stories at all, nor did they censor them for "modern audiences." At least five "problematic" things happen per episode and they even did an episode where half the cast was in yellowface. I miss the early/mid 80s.
