I like how Mike still has the leg jimmies but he’s old and alcoholic so he has to do it manually.
Rich does that too. Manually, that is.

(don't listen to the clip on your speakers if someone's around, you've been warned)

Don't you love new BR transfers? I can finally watch The Alienator.

My first reaction was "he must be kidding". Then I saw the trailer and the difference is obviously night and day. The problem is that they probably put all the interesting stuff in those 60+ seconds and I trust RLM's assessment more than that.
Nah, I wouldn't say the trailer is lying to you. I watched the Blu-ray (you can download a rip on rarelust.com), and the visuals are fairly interesting throughout the entire duration. There are these black & white portions of the movie that deserve special mention. That stuff looked pretty awesome. RLM is correct that the movie's narrative, or lack thereof, is unsatisfying. Well, it's really the ending in particular that pissed me off. I was intrigued by the movie up to that point, but the ending made me feel like I wasted my time.

By no means am I saying the movie is a hidden gem, but judging it based on the VHS transfer is unfair. Not only is the video quality of the VHS extremely muddy and low-res, but the image is also badly cropped. So, all of the shot compositions are ruined.

All I can think is a) responding to a conservative twitter guy means their reddit thread is going to shit bricks and b) that Mike wrote that tweet but pretended Rich wrote it to make himself feel better.
Some of the redditors googled the wrong person. They searched Steven not Stephen. So half of them were angry at the wrong person.

I'm kinda sick of RLM, to be totally honest.

In the day, I was subbed and watched and rewatched almost everything, and now the only things I like to watch are Rich and Mike talking Trek, random quiz show shitposting, and some Re-View episodes.
I haven't been able to watch HitB for close to 5 years now, I don't care about new slop, let alone Mike and Jay's opinions on them. BOTW is tiring; each damn episode is Marvel length, and apart from wheel episodes, the movies are completely uninteresting even at 3x speed.
It's just not the same as it was 10+ years ago. Maybe it's me or them but there's so much better to watch now.

Their episode on new trek are still funny but i agree for the most part. Their biggest issue is they seam uninterested in actually doing HITB so the episodes fuckign suck. They just talk about how people are reacting to the movie instead of talking about it. If i wanted to know what other people thought about it i wouldn't be watching HITB.

I agree to some extent. I eased into RLM, and I seem to be easing out lately.

Years ago I saw the Plinket Phantom Menace review like everybody else and liked it, then promptly forgot about it. I didn't realize that these guys did anything else.

Long after that, I watched that review again out of nostalgia, and some of RLM's other stuff started popping up in my YouTube recommendations. I didn't watch much of it at first. I don't watch a ton of movies -- especially new movies -- so much of their stuff didn't appeal to me initially. I'd watch the occasional Re:View for old movies that I enjoyed, and most were pretty hit or miss.

I remember seeing BotW videos pop up, and I thought: "Why would I want to watch that? I've never even heard of any of those movies that they're talking about!" so I avoided those for a while.

I got a Wheel of the Worst episode at one point and watched it on a whim, and I was hooked. Listening to them riff on those random videos -- the style of which (but not the specific tapes) I remembered from my childhood really tickled me.

When I ran out of Wheel episodes, I gave regular BotW a chance, and while those were a bit of a mixed bag, I enjoyed them more than I thought I would.

When Covid hit, I started watching HitB because those hack frauds had endeared themselves to me, and they covered a lot of things that were coming out on streaming, so they gave me idea of what to watch.

Lately, though... eh, HitB covers movies I don't care about. BotW is sometimes ok, but there's a lot of low points, and it seems to drag on. I still like Wheel and wheel-like episodes, but they can be bloated as well. I mean, 20 minutes of grown-ass men playing Jenga with VHS tapes before they even start talking about the videos?

I really like the trivia games, though, and it seems like the RLM'ers themselves do, too. I think there's something to that. It's more fun watching someone have fun than watching them slog through something.

Oh well. I still watch a fair amount of their stuff because I'm a creature of habit -- but I'm not as excited as I used to be when they'd release something new.

What other channels would you recommend like RLM?

I'm bored by the "comedy review" schtick, I want something with meat to its review. It's a review for a point, something to actually say, something to actually learn. It's the only reason I still find wheel episodes mildly entertaining (the films themselves are interesting) and their Re:View stuff, which actually is engaging.

Find reviews of things you want to engage with and that's how you find channels that might be a step up to what you're looking for.

"Like RLM" is the wrong approach; that's the entire problem.

They're artfags these days who like their weird indie shit but videos about that don't really get views so they need to do videos on Tron: Ares and other horrible slop.

Their video on Tron: Ares is probably the worst one out there.
They're so out of touch with culture right now, they have no clue why Jared Leto isn't a box office draw.
This is your job, do some research.
They got 855k views on that video right now so that's like $2k, probably more because they pack multiple ads in 1 video and popular channels can get better deals on ad revenue.
You can look up an actor for 5 minutes before filming the video for that money, you can do something.

One of the most infuriating things about RLM are the ravenous reddit-tier comments on each video within 5 minutes. I can't tell if these are just lifelong fanatics who it never gets old to or just new teens who just found them. My point is, it's definitely making them complacent, I feel. When you essentially have a cult who will lick your balls no matter what gimmick or shit you try, you start going "Fuck it, let's just do whatever" and I feel that's what they're doing now.

Actual passion before, now it just feels like a lot of obligation that they know their fans will slurp up no questions asked. I feel like I've been muted from their channel too for any dissenting opinions; I can't tell if they're just buried or that, but it is concerning, regardless.

The issue is they're still doing well enough that Jay was complaining about Joe Dante Part 1 Re:View "only" got about half a million views in their video about the Youtube view count drama a few months back. That and their Patreon has over 9800 patrons which using an estimate from the last time their patron showed their earnings per month means they're making over $40K a month. (9800 times $4.47 is almost $44000) They make that much just from Patreon alone not even including YT ad revenue and merchandise and without sponsors or doing livestreaming. Hence they're able to feel complacent because of how loyal their paypigs are. Some people (myself included) may feel that RLM has gone down in quality, but its clear that is a minority opinion on the matter considering how consistent their viewcounts on their videos are. The videos are at worst comfortably mediocre just like modern day AVGN. As long as they never pull a Nostalgia Critic's The Wall, they will be fine.
RLM is smart enough to not go off the beaten path and just stick with the main shows: BOTW, Half In The Bag, and Re:View with occasional stuff like the trivia videos. They know what works and stick with it.

They already did, it was called Space Cop.
Its a crappy movie for sure, but only their hardcore fans paid to see it. The fans could have either fooled themselves to like it or just shrugged their shoulders and are glad they gave money to their favorite Youtube channel. People aren't going to pay just to trash somebody's work like how nobody read Linkara's books until somebody posted them on Kiwi Farms a couple of years ago. The Wall was a video posted on CA's channel that anyone can watch and talk shit about it hence why everyone and their mother talked shit about it while barely anyone has done a review on Space Cop.
