I guess I don't understand why I spent so much time trying to build up my character when they could have just killed him before the game even started.

Can't win don't try.
A consistent theme of the games is inevitability. When you do something there will be repercussions. It happens to John, it happens to Arthur, and if you choose it then it happens to Ross. It will potentially happen to Jack as well.

John was the 'inevitable' for the last three members of the gang. People don't forget, nothing gets forgiven.

The big problem I had with the end of RDR1 is Jack was the one truly innocent character in the RDR games and he ends up committing a cold blooded murder out of revenge. Everyone else in the RDR or GTA games are complete shitbags at worst or people who do awful things to survive (like hook or steal) or somewhere in between. Uncle, and John die to give his family a chance to get away and Jack just throws it away. It makes sense, but it feels like such a downer ending.
Jack does "inherit" John's karma meter, so there is hope for him to reform himself after the revenge.

A new easter egg/mystery has been discovered in RDR2, and one that has apparently been in the game since its release.
The wikia also has a page on it now, and the tl;dr is that it's been discovered that spiderwebs with feathers in them will spawn in certain locations during certain times of the night, and when you mark down all the locations on the map, they make the same spider symbol that appears on one of the telegraph poles where they spawn.

Also, the feathers' file names are similar to the dreamcatcher ones, and that along with their colors and the other symbols on some of the different poles might mean something greater, but all that's been conclusively found yet is the spider map symbol, and the pole symbols (in particular, five crosses, and then a guitar) that eventually point to the very tip of Spider Gorge, and what's also speculated to be cut content locations. Lastly, there's a similar thing like this in GTA 5, and it might also tie into that, too.

Ayo kiwis, jeettube recommended me a Pokémon mod for RDR2.
No download links for now though and the sloptuber which is the modmaker mentions needing to have OBS installed as a minimum requirement :tomgirl:

I recently picked Red Dead 2 back up after a long time since I genuinely enjoyed the story mode. However, I completely forgot how utterly half-assed they address the whole Gilded Age racism stuff. Despite it all, the worst slur you hear in the game is "darkie" which made me laugh. Seriously? Not going to have Micah call Lenny a nigger? Or Bill isn't going to call the Indians a bunch of red niggers? These are supposed to be hardened killers who openly provoke others with insults into fighting, yet their moral compass won't dare cross the line of racism.

Dutch has racial egalitarian views on race and chastises Bill when he goes off about the indigenous before kidnapping Bronte. Micah is smart enough to keep that mask on.

I'm thinking of trying this one out, but I am turned off by all the virtue signalling/propaganda and just the general mean spirited millenial reddit writing the game has. Is the actual gameplay/open world good enough to justify playing if I already wrote off the story from being enjoyable?

Actually, yes; if you are ready to the survival elements.
I finished the game in 100% last year and was horrible, but the last cutscene was worth it. Every fucking second.

The hunting and fishing, plus free roaming makes it all worth it. I 100% it during COVID. The attention to detail makes the open world exploration so much fun.

I like to leave camp after arriving in Chapter 2 and just explore. It's a great game.

American Venom is one of the greatest final missions you will ever play.

"Micah! MICAH YOU COWARD! COME OUT AND FACE ME!"

i will never forget how i was going to do that mission in just a while based on where i was in the story when my game crashed and i got my ass sent back to guarma because i turned off autosaving and hadnt saved since then and i essentially ragequit because of it because i didnt wanna go play through another 40 or 50 hours of the game just to get back to where i was

Yeah, everything from Guarma onwards is a slog with a few highlights in Chapter 6 with The Fine Art of Conversation, Visiting Hours, and My Last Boy, and then the Epilogue is well... the epilogue, and then American Venom hits where its just you left and it all feels worth it to get there.

The last bunch of sequencials missions are fine.
Arthur remembering hopeful quotes if karma's high or depressive ones if karma's low is a excellent touch.
First time i chosen helping John but with the 100% was getting back for the money but with high karma. The slash in the eye against Micah and making him one-eyed is pretty good.

MY NAME IS. JOHN! MARSTON!

Oh, so that's where that meme came from. I actually like the meme version over the original. The original is too slow for my liking. And, no, I have not beaten RDR2 yet so I do not know the emotional significance of the song.
