There's that black widow hooker in Valentine who has you dump her victims in the pig corral... shame you can't do that to people you tie up.

Abigail is a thief and pickpocket, and the other women do camp chores when they aren't finding marks. Bill and Micah sure as sure aren't doing any laundry or chopping potatoes for Pearson.
These are rough-living frontier outlaws. Living in their own filth eating bear meat cooked on a knife and wearing the same underwear for a month should be part of their character.

I'm not as bothered by the presence of the whores as I am by what feels like an overabundance of them. And the Reverend could have been a decent character if he had an actual function within the gang besides just being another retainer.

Pearson I like. I don't remember much about him - how he joined up with them - but having a chuck wagon chef in the gang makes sense, that's a job you can do without but it's something everyone respected back then, highly valued having actual chefs in the train.

I may have lots of problems with RDR2's story, but they did do a very good job of writing high-quality dialogue, good cinematography, all of that stuff was well executed to make it very watchable/playable. I think the one thing they really got right that other games should be studying is how it made use of MASSIVE amounts of background dialogue and little interactions around the camp to add a sense of life, stupid as the plot was it felt like real life when I was playing it because of how convincing it was to just walk around camp eating, chatting, doing stuff like that, and then to have similar going on in the world. And the breakdown of the gang and tonal shift from Saint Denis to Roanoke Ridge was amazing, the bleak atmosphere there with people bitterly and paranoidly sniping at each other sitting around in a shitty rocky ledge amidst sinister pseudo-Appalachian forest was incredible.

I wish there was a game inspired by Lonesome Dove but with RDR2 like production value.

The point for Dutch is to play cult leader. If you picture him being a 1970s radical Left nutjob in the 1890s with 1890s-era social issues then everything about them makes sense, and unfortunately Dutch becomes so disgusting that it kind of ruins the whole story for you.
Issue is the game never commits to it. Everyone is a good boy besides Micah and the loan shark, and the implications is that Dutch truly lost it on the island. If the game started in the past with Dutch being way more noble maybe it would have worked, but the gang was already on the cult implosion phase in the start of the game.

And I still can't get over how the loan sharking is the worse action the gang takes. Literal murderers and thieves, with multiple missions of wiping out entire towns, but it's debt collection, the only action that is sort of legal and you actually need to interact with the victim, that is the true evil.

I think we should have done the Blackwater job to start with as a railroaded tutorial for basic combat and horse riding and have Arthur and Hosea talk during the middle of it as they fight their way out. "This was supposed to be a simple boat robbery!" "Why didn't he go for the bonds you and I told him about?" "Has he lost his damn mind?"

Showcasing the absolute pandemonium and how it differed from their usual MO instead of just talking about it after the fact would have greatly improved things. Show, don't tell, but Rockstar did nothing but tell about that event. And then of course it sets the stage for the events of Valentine, Rhodes, and Saint Denis as how the gang just keeps falling down into this spiral of ever-increasing violence as a result of Dutch's choices.

I imagine the game's scale was originally a lot larger over multiple time points and locations, but instead they only took the third act and made it overly bloated.

Like the first act is the gang forming, second act is the events leading to the botched Blackwater, and the third act is the gang slowly dying/separating after the fallout.

Also somehow Micah is the worst because...he is a criminal who does evil things. The autistic rdr redditards have a giant hate boner for him it's unreal. At the same time they sucking the fictional dick of every other violent criminal in the gang.

I genuinely have no idea how anyone can take Micah seriously. He's so cartoonishly evil he's a joke.

Being a jerk in modern media is worse than being a murderer, despite the fact that the whole point of the game is that the entire gang is evil that justifies its actions by trying to portray themselves as victims. It's like the script was written right before the media decided that people deemed victims have no responsibility to their actions and thus it was changed to ignoring its own message.

Carl Johnson and Trevor Philips were great because nobody ever claimed either of them were a good person. They were just ENTERTAINING.

Honestly Arthur Morgan is kind of a stick in the mud too. I didn’t mind him, but John Marston had a fine mixture of earthiness and eloquence/wit that made him fantastically memorable.

The treasure locations in RDO have been quite generous so far. I did two; each one gave me at least one Gold bar and a hundred dollars. Maybe it's a holiday present. I have several saved. Basically, my RDO experience now is buy ingredients, buy mash, AFK in moonshiner shack, do delivery, repeat. I wish there was MORE passive money opportunities in RDO. GTA Online does it better.

Is this who I think it is? lol

There's a bug with the cattail pond treasure map; if the chest spawns on top of the train tunnel, it will be empty. Apparently though you can open a different treasure map, then open the cattail map again and it will spawn in a different (non bugged) location.

If your gold is limited and you're wondering which role to buy next, I recommend collector, then bounty hunter, and only naturalist if you really really want the legendary animal coats. (I usually just get the bear coat which you don't need to buy the role for)

If you on PC (master race) there's an easy way to guarantee a private lobby, just look up "startup.meta"
I was crashing to desktop every 20-30 minutes, copied the startup file and haven't even had a disconnection in the past week and a half. Plus you'll get tons of random events (strangers, hideouts) for more gold and treasure maps.

Edit: I should say collector role is a grind, but you'll get XP for every collectible, even those you loot from corpses, and the daily challenges are basically free gold. Bounty hunter is also a grind but it should have been fun , and somehow it isn't, which is why I'd rather go for collector.

My experience now with RDO is to shop for ingredients, produce moonshine, go AFK (or play poker), do dailies, deliver batch, repeat. Moonshiner is the only role to make decent money, provided you pay attention to avoid damaging your batch.

I maxed out my collector's role. I still have a few items to find to complete a few sets. Bounty hunter, I definitely should invest in a wagon for solo hunting if possible.

When the winter event is over, I want to splurge on some cosmetics and horseback.

You know I've been thinking about the post I replied to and I'm seeing a lot of money coming in from the moonshine runs (helps that it's doubled this month of course). I guess normally it's somewhere close to 2x the rate of trader income?

I tried a multi target bounty once. By the time I had two targets tied up, one more was dead and the last ran off. Then I died and both of em got loose again, even with the reinforced lasso.

You have to knock them out, or kick them while they're down. You'd be better off doing a couple legendary bounties with health tonics.

Also take into account the mash prices and ingredient supply for profit. If you play it smart, you could make a few hundred in an hour's time give or take.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was nominated for Steam's Labor of Love 2023 award. The game has not been updated in two and a half years. I imagine somebody nominated it to make a point to R* that RDR2 deserves love. I'd love to see how this develops. Screenshot 2024-01-01 at 10.25.53 PM.png

I've reached max rank in the Moonshiner role and bought the bar/band expansion downstairs. Can you make passive income with it or is it just cosmetic? Oh well, at least it's something to have and grind for.

I don't care much for the Naturalist role or hunting legendary animals.

I'm happy I don't have to continually change outfits because the weather wants to be sporadic. What is even the point of the bar if you don't have friends that play and it doesn't make money itself? Does the bar cause Maggie and the brewer to disappear?
