I think it's a combination of this, them working of GTA 6, and the fact that it's all but confirmed RDR1's code is so spaghettified that handing it off to some other studio would've resulted in an even bigger disaster than the GTA remakes.

Online obviously just went full steam ahead on that, but its lacking the polish of the single player. But the single player is so up its own ass with wanting to be something Clint Eastwood would jerk off too, that all of this beautiful world design that makes it so fun to explore and live in the world and emergent gameplay that can happen is brutally contrasted by the heavily scripted on rails sections that make up the bulk of the games actual content.

So I watched a few videos on how to get RDR running with Xenia canary. I uncapped the frame rate meaning it was allowed to get up to 60 fps and I got it upscaled to 1080p. The game looks really good even at 1080p. If Rockstar would just do a PC port that can be run in higher resolutions and frame rates that would be pretty good. A remake in the RDR2 engine would be way better. But RDR doesn't look that bad. I would say it looks better than GTA IV and it's just a year or so older . You go back and you play GTA IV after playing GTA V and IV looks a bit rough. I played RDR first and then played RDR2. It wasn't such a shock visually. Yeah it looks like a game from 2010.

Anyway performance with RDR through xenia was shit so I just went back to the default settings. That means 720p with 2xMSAA. This is how it runs on the 360 normally. I actually recommend this if you don't have really powerful PC hardware. The frame rate was not a steady 60. I saw it go as low as the mid 40's in some parts of the game. So I decided I would just put the frame rate cap back on and play it at the original 30fps. I would rather have a steady 30 fps than a very unsteady framerate that fluctuates wildly from 60 to 45. That's also annoying. So I kept the resolution upscaling the same and locked the frame rate. This also caused issues. Like the sky would flicker and other issues happened.

There are some post procession options you can use. That's what they are called. You press F6 and it brings up the menu. My monitors native resolution is 1920x1080. So any game that doesn't run at the native resolution won't look very good. Though there is an option for 1280x720 in the resolutions list. It's still not native so it will look bad. If you have an old 720p monitor or TV around it might look a bit better. But 720p is going to look like 720p. You can apply some FXAA in the post processing menu and there is some sharpening options below that. I use the first Nvidia FXAA option and use some of the sharpening. It's about as good as you are going to get.

I did hear the Switch port of RDR will run in 720p handheld and 1080p docked. So I will definitely get the Switch port if it's a good port. I want the physical copy and that won't come till October. I find it funny how the Xbox One S would only run RDR in 720p with 2xMSAA but the Switch will run it in 1080p docked. Guess I will have a reason to use my Switch dock again.

The problem with RDO at least for Rockstar is that it's not GTAO. You can't sell people flying rocket powered motorcycles with heat seeking missiles for assholes to fly around and grief people with. The other issue is that the RDR player base is not the same as the GTA player base. RDR fans like stories. They want story driven content. They aren't made up of a bunch of people that want to fly around a map and ruin other people's fun. This is what happens in GTAO. Most of everything sold in GTAO is used for griefing and acting like an asshole in multiplayer. The average RDR player is different. They aren't going to dump money into RDO. They want story content. Not new ways to grief other players.
