Bad news:

PlayStation owners are unable to play the original Red Dead Redemption without native hardware (PS3). RDR has been delisted from PSNow and PS+.
Real talk, people should just buy a console, or pirate it. It's not hard, and you can get a used console, and the Game of the Year edition with all the DLCs included for free for under $70.

Which, let's face it, it's a lot cheaper than whatever R*'s gonna charge for it whenever they decide to rerelease it, if that ever actually happens.

What if I just want to play Red Dead Revolver?

That's a damn shame to hear RDR is a good time, not as deep as the sequel in terms of gameplay but still rather good. Fantastic music, voice acting, and the like.

Dumb question but does anyone actually still play Red Dead Online here? If so I'm curious about some opinions on a few things or suggestions.

The thing I dislike the most about RDR2 is in the campaign you don't kill off the antagonists throughout the story. They usually get knocked off by Dutch most of the time or even Abigail takes out one of the big bad guys. Makes Arthur feel like a background character. In the GTA games you're constantly bumping off story characters.

I still play it every now and then, it's a good game to chill out on

That's how I've taken it too. Like the setting and the general feel of things despite it being infested with chinese players in the early morning or late night. I picked up Bounty Hunting since it seemed like a decent enough starting role. What would you say is the next best? I was thinking Trader initially as I enjoy hunting, gathering, and fishing since I tend to take it as a chill thing rather than a focused hunt.

I've just heard Collector is a good way to make money and gold if you read up on how it works. Neither's unlockable perks push the decision one way or the other for me. I just know that paying a high price for working for that Naturalist shrew doesn't appeal and the Moonshiner stuff seems built for someone who actually has a social web in game. Which I do not.

Yeah, Bounty Hunting is a simple, decent starting point, avoid the bounties with more than three suspects if you're playing solo though (Two is manageable enough if you put one dude on your horse and drag the other one via lasso, three susses are tough, but manageable if you're fast enough, use some bolas to trap the third guy for a while, bring the first two in, and then go back for the third before he runs away)

Second best option could go either way between Trader and Collector as far as making easy money goes, they both overlap if you're the type to wander around the map a lot, since you can hunt around and look for treasure at the same time.

I'd suggest going for Trader if you want to get money faster, you will have to put some work in, but the cash comes in as long as you're working it.

Some tips for Trader:

-Your cart is your biggest priority, upgrade that shit as soon as you can, it'll let you get more money

-As soon as you can afford to, it's better to buy the goods it asks of you for a sale rather than getting them through missions, as there's a good chance you'll get a mission asking you to hunt for a specific animal before the timer runs out. This mission is so common and such a time waster, that you'll get sick of it quick even if you enjoy hunting.

-When planning to do a long distance sale, set your camp up in an area with low player count, i usually go for Grizzlies. The road might be harder to drive around in, but it's generally safer. Short distance sales hide you from other players, but you earn less money.

-Always have explosive ammo with you, works wonders against griefers. If you dont care about your honor level then dont be afraid to shoot at their horses. Exp. Ammo is given out every now and then during events, but you can also buy the crafting pamphlet from a fence and craft it yourself.

-This one's for PS4 since it's what i play it on, but if you're certain your cart is not gonna survive an attack or an accident, immediately close application and start over, that way you wont lose your merchandise.

On the other hand, if you don't mind taking it slow, Collector is more of a passive job. It's also one of the best ways to get gold in the game. Just find a treasure map, search for the location, dig up! Keep in mind you will need a metal detector for some of these though.

Only tip for this one is to try and sell your collectibles after you've found the complete collections, the money is much better that way. Of course, nothing wrong with selling them individually if youre short on cash.

Some players created this handy real time map for RDRO, helps a lot for treasure hunting, but... Honestly, i like looking for stuff myself better. I'll link the map later, but it's not hard to find.

Moonshiner would be the fourth best option, and contrary to what you've heard, most of the shiner content is perfectly soloable, from story missions to the sales, as the distances you travel are much shorter. Sure, it's easier with friends, but you don't really struggle or miss anything if you go solo. Pretty kino to have a bar your friends can visit, drink and dance in tho.

Naturalist... Yeah, this one's the last you should be getting. A lot of investment, not much in return. I like it enough, but it's not something you'll get rich out of. You can use it to get easy legendary animals though, and if you're that type of person, after a certain level you can learn how to cure wounded animals too.

Yeah, this one's more of a roleplaying thing. It can wait.

That might be it, in short: Go for Trader if you want to make faster cash while putting work, Collector if you wanna take it easy and patient. After you get both go for Moonshiner, and lastly, and optionally, go for Naturist if you want it.

@Psyduck

Whole post was good but quote is pitching a fit. Thanks a ton for the info! I play on PC myself and don't think there's any cross-platform. In my case griefers are around though its usually more a passive asshole-ish thing rather than frequently active. My usual response is to just drop session if I don't have something super critical that can be lost.

I had heard Trader can attract assholes like flies to shit but I hadn't thought of the Grizzlies as a good spot for it. Frankly the game sometimes reminds me of older MMOs where griefing was kind've part and parcel, though it wasn't hacking so much as someone just dropping what they're doing to try to kill you or bother you.

Its made Strawberry with its cramped streets and small size a goddamn warzone, I frequently find corpses just strewn out in the street. Same with Valentine and Blackwater though far less since both of those two have enough space and cover you can just duck them. It makes me wish I had a better computer in the past to see the game when it was more active but I'm sure it just meant higher instances of some fuckwit with a chinese name zipping in to magdump you or your horse.

I do not understand why these games (RDO, GTO, FO76) are so utterly distasteful of anything private. Random-ass griefers are probably the only thing keeping me from RDO at this point. And frankly, I just don't want to put up with that shit when I could hop in my modded SP and just blam a deer and cook it.

Its precisely its hatred of allowing you to just play things solo that has basically made me give up on the storyline. You're forced into matchmaker and cannot do a damn thing without at least one person joining you. Naturally not a soul is actually doing them so RIP that shit.

Still enjoy the game as it is but most interaction with others is momentary cautious interactions with others or Golden Palace teleporting up to you with invincibility on to try to attack you and still somehow manage to get stunlocked by you shooting or stabbing them. Except you can just drop session and leave them with their tiny dick in hand. Helps I can reload quickly with an SSD but its very easy to tell when the usual suspects wake up.

@Psyduck was not kidding when he said collector is good money. It's laughably easy.

This only works on a PS4, but it creates a dedicated solo lobby. There are no other players. You can't join any Free Roam Events or posses, but there's no griefers and the spawn rate reliably works for everything.

On the PS4, go into Settings - Network - Set Up Internet Connection - Use (whatever method you connect to your router) - Custom - Select Your Network name - IP Address Settings: Automatic - DHCP Host Name: Do Not Specify - DNS Settings: Automatic - MTU Settings: Manual. Change your MTU to 800. Test your internet connection. Now start RDO. When you want to play with other players again, just change things back.

It's unbelievable how much better an experience it is to play RDRO in a completely solo lobby. Makes sales a cakewalk
When you start playing solo lobbies in GTA Online, you quickly realize that Rockstar uses griefers as free labor so they don't have to actually program any discernable AI or come up with any sort of compelling game design.

Is it the same way for RDO?

Wouldnt say its the same imo, pretty much everything worth a damn in RDO you can do solo, and it seems to be purposelly designed that way from what ive played,

Only time ive seen griefers or other players as free labor are during sales (those seem to be brought over from GTAO too) but even then, if there's no one nearby, the game will occasionally spawn some enemies to keep you on your toes, sometimes the sale ends with a huge shootout too, so there's at least something else to do besides driving. Not to mention that the enemy AI is far more reasonable in RDO, so you wont be dealing with perfect aimbots headshotting you from the other half of the fucking map

Nah I find the AI can be decent depending on the situation, they'll never compare to a player since they can't enter Deadeye but they have their moments. They'll duck to avoid gunfire on their horse, will actually fight differently depending on their weapons, and in some pre-set missions they can require some actual conservative play if you don't want to chug your tonics.

Sadly can't enjoy a solo lobby as I play on PC though I've seen a good number of actual players and less douchebag hackers around for a few weeks. May just be the time of year but its been nice. They're usually just an incidental presence that passes by or may represent a short term threat.

It's really dumb how they both allow PVP and griefing yet really don't give you much of anything for engaging them. There's a few 'Kill players by doing <x>' challenges but its mostly minor ones like shooting someone in the back. COULD you ruin someone's mission? Yes, but you won't get too heavily rewarded beyond snatching their toy away for a moment. Player bounties were almost an idea of this but the payout versus the incredible high difficulty is stupid.

Sure you can chase down this guy and his posse for 6 dollars and some experience. Have fun facing 3+ people with Deadeye.

I was looking, as new PC master race, at RDR2 mods, and I thought it would probably be a lame scene compared to GTA. Instead it's, if anything, frustrating on seeing what my PS4 jewed me out of (at least I got to play RDR2 way back when it was new). Every little thing that pissed me off has been fixed by someone, like that horrible wanted system. Every thing I wanted, little or big, has been added, whether keeping wagons as property, hot air balloons as vehicles, hunting dogs, Nuevo Paraiso.

Also, unpopular opinion about RDR2 specifically:
Micah is a shitty character. I honestly am not a huge fan of RDR2's story in general, it had my full attention the whole time, but it's (like someone else on here was saying recently) a classic example of gamers considering anything well-produced to be well-written, we accept rambling mediocrity as high art because we have no standards. But, Micah in particular is annoying to me because he's what I think of as a hate sink character, an antagonist written just to be as obnoxious as possible to make them annoying/hateable in a cheap way, regardless of if it contributes anything to them as a character, and it even drags the story down when Dutch is inexplicably obsessed with him. Would have been cooler, i think, if Micah had been more like a sly backstabber instead of just an outright tool. I could write a character that does nothing but kick puppies and people would hate it, but it would still be a shite villain.

Agreed. He was far too overt in his villainy when I would have preferred him to be much more of a man with a forked tongue, which is how he's referred to in the blind wanderer's dialogue.
