OP could have simply put his involvement of Duke Nukem Forever as a lolcow.

That game crippled any chance of a half decent reboot of Duke Nukem for the next ten plus years.

Fuck this guy.

It's a shame they don't hand it off to the guys who made the DOOM and Wolfenstein games. Made gold out of those 2 games, wonder what they could do for Duke.

Wolfenstein was handled by Machine Games who're in Sweden and a rather new studio in development terms, they've also been very very quiet since 2016's Quake celebrations and riding hard on the Wolfenstein success.

Doom was developed by original ip holders, ID Software, which was acquired by Zenimax in 2009. Prior to this id Software was in a state we've all kind of got used to namely "a sodding mess". Doom 4 had already been in development of some sort since 2008 and was a hideous Call of Duty clone before Zenimax smashed the reset button around 2011 as the hype for endless CoD clones began to wane. It was about this time Zenimax attitude (Pretty much just whatever Todd Howard or Pete Hines fancies as hardcore gamers) began to filter through and we got the "final" reboot in 2011 which was apparently inspired by Rock and Roll music.

So basically, yeah I agree entirely, sell the IP to Bethesda/Zenimax and let them fix the fucking thing.

I agree about selling the IP but seeing as how DN3D was the biggest competitor to id's FPS dominance of the mid-90s, it'd be a little weird to sell the IP to id.

There's tons of other people who could do wonders with it though. The guys who did the Shadow Warrior reboot come to mind.

Maybe don't sell the IP, but instead A: Get a license for the newest iD tech engine(In large part because it would act as a sign for many people of a franchise turnaround much like DOOM had, and in part just because the engine is fucking awesome), and B: Have development of a new DN game built on that engine overseen by an outside contractor with sufficient authority to pull heads out of asses and avoid any of the fucktarded moves that have plagued Gearbox in recent years.

At least, I think that'd be the smartest move for Gearbox. They'd spend a little bit more on development from paying a contractor like that, but if all went well they'd be able to create a hugely successful title.

Of course, this would require them to realize that they have enough of a problem internally that they can't be trusted to not fuck a Duke title up without assistance.

I love that reboot. They compensated for the missing "offensive" humor with ridiculous gore, and it works.

But Duke Nukem is its crude, offensive humor and attitude. (Along with blood and guts and crazy weapons and great level design and all that good stuff.) Even DNF understood that. Any modern reboot won't be Duke without it. I don't know if the guys behind Shadow Warrior are willing to do that.

Willing, maybe not, but all of the other pieces of making a good Duke reboot are there. I think they could do it if they were willing.

People Can Fly could probably do a good job too, and Gearbox already has a working relationship with them.

Just spitballing ideas here.

That is a good idea, but their heads are up their asses to the shoulder at this point. I really doubt any outside agency could dislodge them now.

I got an idea:
Trey and Matt from South Park write the story/plot, Bethsoft/Zenimax/iD do the gameplay.

Actually, another good idea for a developer to do a Duke game... Running with Scissors. Admittedly even today they're a small team, but if anyone could do Duke justice, it'd be them. They know exactly how to write good one-liners for a protagonist like Duke, and know how to go about offending everyone with their references rather than just people they don't agree with.

Yeah, we all thought that...

Until Postal 3, which was garbage.

RWS had nothing to do with Postal 3 and has completely disavowed it.

They do have a new expansion to Postal 2 though which is supposed to be good, I have it but haven't played it

I'd like to see them write the Duke game but maybe not make it

He's now officially a cow.

Was Battleborn some kind of passion project of his? It's beyond autistic to still be this concerned with defending it.

In fairness to Randy, he thinks Battleborn didn't get a fair shake because it came out at the same time as Overwatch, and he's probably right. However, a fair shake wouldn't have done him a lot of favors.

I actually bought it for $7 during a sale. It's passable at best, and not worth sperging out on Twitter about. There's a lot of Burch-ish humor in the single player campaign (was Burch writing for it?), and the multiplayer is dry and not compelling at all. It's just a mediocre game that should probably be consigned to the dustbin of history. In no way was this game going to be a competitor to Overwatch even if Gearbox had thrown $50 million in advertising.

Battleborn might be the perfect case of wasting a lot of money on something nobody really wants. They could have had a decently sized and devoted playerbase just by making it a Borderlands spinoff. Still far from Overwatch's success and probably still an overall loss of money, but at least somebody would give a shit. At least then you wouldn't have to pretend your game has a thriving porn scene via a hastily thrown together subreddit. Even furries don't care enough to draw porn of anyone other than the Falco knockoff, and probably only BECAUSE he kind of looks like Falco if you squint.

I dunno, there's evidence that people want a good FPS MOBA by the completely unexpected success of the Monday Night Combat series (which Battleborn was definitely inspired by).

However, Battleborn just didn't do anything interesting. It was almost like a step back from MNC. Less content, worse maps, and the humor was actually considerably worse than MNC (MNC billed itself as a ridiculously over-the-top future sports show and did it well). Battleborn basically banked all of its appeal on its WACKY characters which weren't very wacky or remarkable in any way.

I absolutely agree that this would have been way better received as a Borderlands spinoff. A Borderlands FPS MOBA still would have probably sucked, but at least it would have had a gimmick that appealed to people.

I was curious why he's saying it is not "free to play" when every media outlet on the planet is saying it is. I guess he's right, if this is what they're doing...

The free version of Battleborn will give players access to six of the game's 30 characters, rotated on a weekly basis. Character and player account progression is permanent, so when a character rotates out and then return, any progress you've made with it will still be there, and content including heroes, skins, boosters, and Story Mode Operations will be unlockable individually in the Marketplace, with either in-game credits or Platinum premium currency.

But this might be the most re.tarded business model I've ever heard of, especially if they only allow one character per team in lobby picking. (No clue, TBH, but I thought most games like this require that.) Also, If you don't mind grinding to unlock characters and (I think?) weapons there's a very recent free to play FPS game in Paladins that has none of this bullshit.

'Course now that Paladins becoming fairly popular, it is apparently now attracting a lot of cheaters since even though they are banning botters, etc., all you have to do is re-register. Not sure how a free to play game can stop something like that.
