Apparently at the University of Missouri, there's been some problems with racism. There's also word of white students driving around campus, hurling slurs at black students and making death threats.
I don't know how substantiated those threats are, but this tension seems to be a bit more grievous than Tumblr-level SJW bitching. I don't envy black students on that campus right now.
The Boondocks toyed with this back when it was still a newspaper strip. I can certainly see it, though I doubt it was a conscious choice made by Lucas. But I'm not really going to defend him any further because fuck Jar Jar.

But there is a single option open that isn't ridiculous: that they are, universally and without exception, full of shit.
People who are actually asocial don't do a lot of social networking. People who are actually sociopaths do not require the constant reassurance of a dozen asspatters. People who are actually too depressed to function do not have the emotional energy to engage in 24-hour flame wars over whether or not gummy bears constitute a gender identity.
The people who do fit the above criteria are teenagers, and adults who are the emotional equivalents of teenagers.
People keep acting as though there's some small subset of people on Tumblr that have real issues, and perhaps there are. Unfortunately, everyone claims to be a part of that subset, so it's ultimately meaningless. As such, the sensible course of action is to assume that anyone on tumblr who claims to have mental problems is looking for attention, and make fun of them
