Helpfully, the Spanish soon discovered that the Aztecs were hated by every neighboring nation because the Aztecs were fucking insane and did shit like tell some friendly king that they were going to turn his daughter into a goddess and then they skinned her alive. That's before getting into the sacrificial captive shit, where the Aztecs basically thought that the human heart was a stolen piece of the Sun and if you weren't worthy to have the Sun inside you then it needed to be ripped out.
