Had an experience not unlike this not long ago, and it was a supposedly "indie" bookstore I stepped into, that turned out to be yet another one I've walked into that's indistinguishable from a Big Chain Bookstore these days - lots of floorspace given over to crappy merchandise like mugs, tote bags, etc. with stupid slogans on them, board games and Funko Pops, most of the "fiction" available on the shelves is airport paperbacks like you can find anywhere else, vampire billionaire romance fantasy slop, YA slop written by neurotic 40-something women with seven cats for an audience of mostly neurotic 20- and 30-somethings, about a plucky teenage girl in the future fighting a dystopian regime while falling in love with a six-foot alpha werewolf from outer space, all at cover price. For non fiction, you could pick up the latest politician or celeb's memoirs or pop history garbage by journalists or "Trust the Science, chuds!" book, written by nobodies. Then these sorts of "independent" bookstores have the nerve to put up signs in serif font commanding shoppers to "buy local!" while making no effort to do anything to stand out as "local".
