Depends on how cultured the city is. The most well-known bookstore of second hand books in the city I go to university to largely sell romance novels for fiction. The city has a population of about 130,000 with development spilling into nearby towns and is in a third world country. Literary classics pop up only very occasionally. I've barely seen a work of philosophy there.The only bookshops worth visiting these days are the ones with a focus on second hand books. At least that's the impression I've gotten from my own experiences visiting bookshops in major cities.
Also here's an exchange I remember hearing from two Brits in the store:
A: "Are you interested in a book on Margaret Thatcher?"
B: "No."
