Genetics are most everything about a person, as we are no less animal than anything else that dwell on this earth.
It's the old nature/nurture debate -- in reality, who we turn out to be is a combination of the two.

Genetics plays a vital role, but so does environment and upbringing. A child prodigy with a genius IQ could be ruined by an abusive home life or even one that fails to properly develop his talents and abilities. And at the other end of the spectrum, a low IQ child could be surprisingly successful if raised in a supportive environment by attentive parents.
And, of course, even on the genetic side, nothing is guaranteed. Two genius parents could pump out a 'tard baby, and two tards can make a genius -- there's a lot of randomness at work.

My theory is that Bob was somewhere on the spectrum himself (many technically-minded people are a little spectrum-y) -- it just wasn't diagnosed in his time. Fortunately, he got the "good at math" flavor of autism instead of the "I sort glass" autism and went on to have a very successful career.

The thing about funerals is you don't have to interact with the person who's actually in the casket
Indeed, funerals are for those who are left behind. The person in the casket does not know who attended and who didn't. You go to a funeral to console those who were closest to the deceased. I've attended several funerals of people who I have never met (e.g., friends' grandparents) just to be there for my friends.

It's unusual that Alan and Bob seemed to be somewhat estranged (I couldn't imagine getting new patio furniture without telling my dad about it -- let alone having a child who would be his granddaughter), but all family dynamics are different. I'm sure Dr Alan was busy with his own life, career, and family; and Bob had his hands full with Barb and Chris in the funhouse -- perhaps they just drifted apart as they both got older.

Whatever the case, I hope that Dr Alan was surrounded by those who loved him when he departed this earth, and I hope that those who are left behind can find peace.

I empathize for Chris some here, because it seems like he wishes he had more family that cared about him.
Looking back, it seems that's always sort of been Chris' M.O. He's craved human relationships even though he has never demonstrated that he fully understands what they are. He wanted to play games with friends, but only if he could win all the time using his homemade superpowered Pokey-man cards. He wanted a girlfriend, but he didn't want a partner -- he wanted someone who could take care of him like a mother who he could also bang (and look at how that turned out!).

But I feel bad for him because it seems he can't comprehend what those relationships really mean -- he just wants them.

I also feel bad for him because it seems as if he still has a very childlike view of death -- being unable or unwilling to grasp its finality. This goes all the way back to when his dog died, and he "reincarnated" her in his comics (and later did the same thing with his dad), hopeful that they'll be reunited when his imaginary fantasy world merges with the real world.

Sometimes I think that deep down he knows better. He knows that it can't be true, but he clings to the fantasy because reality is too harsh for him.

Genetics plays a vital role, but so does environment and upbringing.
I think the current concession for the tabula rasa crowd is that it's 50/50 genetics and nurture, when it's really more like 80/20 nature-nurture -- barring cases of severe abuse ( lack of language acquisition during critical periods and such) and malnutrition; and on track to proven 100% genetics eventually, both intelligence and behavioral inclinations.
They aren't usually idiots, evolution from the neck down is ideological wishful thinking, they are starting to use epigenetics as a shorthand for magic more recently.

That’s a possibility since he’s the youngest unless he does something really retarded.
Earlier, it was stated that "following a brief illness" is code for something like rectal cancer. How often is Chris getting any sort of annual check ups or proper medical care?

I do love the idea of his current tard wrangler forcing him to get a colonoscopy, but I can't believe it. Chris might die from something completely preventable.

Chris might die from something completely preventable.
Correct me if I'm wrong but besides being fat and lazy, Chris has fewer health vices than even the average American that lives to 80 ... It's not like he drinks at all or smokes or takes any drugs or works anywhere with carcinogens like a factory or mine.
It would have to be something really common in the family.

I've noticed it's a common thing with Chris and his family to cling to pedigrees and accomplishments that don't mean anything. I mean, with all due respect to Bob Chandler, no one cares that he has patents to his name. No one cares that Queen Anne (or whoever) is Chris's ancestor.

As a southerner myself I've noticed that's a thing that rednecks talk about a lot. "My great great uncle invented the tater tot." NO ONE CARES. YOU LOST THE WAR.

(I'm allowed to be racist against southerners so don't @ me)

RIP Dr. Chandler. My biggest fear is that weens will try and get into the funeral/celebration of life.
I know barb's family hated her because she's barb, but what's the deal with Bob's family? Why do they had such few interactions with Bob?
Bob’s past marriages were also strained.
Never heard of this guy. How does the other brother feel?
Cole? Nothing, he is Barb’s son.

there is no way that anyone who goes to the funeral would not know about chris' antics.
lucky for them he does not know where they live so he can't just show up, unless they send a card out to him with the adress ment for everyone by mistake.
what are the odds of barb showing up? she really does have nobody else in her life.

That's actually a remarkable display of empathy towards his brothers family and his sister, from Chris. It's bizarre and insane as Chris is. But he did acknowledge the feelings of others being greater than his own. Which is uncommon for him.
It isn't like Chris is incapable of experiencing human connection. He probably does care about his family to same extent and would have liked to have had a relationship with them. More so because he is a lonely and isolated individual who craves social interaction but still.

The problem with Chris is that he perceives everything through his bizarre mental lens. Everything gets filtered through that so it gets expressed in a weird fashion. He doesn't comprehend how normal human beings perceive things because he himself is abnormal. That and he is an egomaniac.
I mean, with all due respect to Bob Chandler, no one cares that he has patents to his name.
What are you talking about? Those are literal accomplishments that Bob managed to achieve. It would be different if Chris was trying to take credit for what his father did (which he does all the time).

For Bob though that is a bragging right and shows him to have been a highly skilled human being.
