In a world where Bob met a different woman and had a different kid, we might have seen him in an episode of something on the discovery channel. He'd have passed away celebrated by the few people who use his patents daily in industry, and the people who broadened their musical lives based on his genuinely impressive musical taste and knowledge.

Bob visited him at least twice in his later years, once to get an eye exam done on Chris and another to give his granddaughter some presents, and Alan attended Bob’s funeral, so they couldn’t have been that estranged. We only know of those two visits so it’s possible Bob visited Alan other times without Chris, they lived in the same state.
