In all seriousness though, the culture of at least the Duggar family and their associates (and I’d go so far as to extend it to a certain strain of fundamentalism) covered for the abuse. Another example is Bret Alan Smith of the fundie Smith family. His daddy (patriarch Captain Bret Smith) still swears he’s a good boy and he dindu nuffin (“persecution, I tell ya!”) even after he pleaded guilty to raping a younger relative.

Fundamentalist communities are rife with abuse, especially sexual abuse. It’s an environment where such abuse happens often to people who cannot really defend themselves, and are then punished by the community for going against their abusers. The strict social controls also attracts opportunistic predators who use their positions of power and the weakness of their preferred prey in this environment. In religious fundamentalist communities this is usually children, women, or often female children. The community views sexuality as inherently sinful. It views speaking against the man as improper. It views you as having done something wrong and often stresses the punishment of the divine for some sin. Manipulators and abusers very quickly pick up on using these social tools to hide their crimes.

A 11 to 17 year old girl or younger in one of these communities is likely to be already raised around this societal pressure to conform to be someone who shouldn’t talk about their sexuality. They may also be too young to really understand what’s happening, but speaking about it is discouraged since you’re not supposed to go against the male abuser, etc. This allows victims to quickly accumulate and warning signs to be ignored as often the abuser has a position of religious as well as social authority. It’s fucked.

Pedos do come from all walks of life, but let's not deny the fact that cultures, and places that are highly repressive, and highly conservative while also viewing all forms of sexuality as inherently evil, and women and children like chattel don't tend to have more of them.

Religion itself isn't the problem. It's sick fucks who take it to the extreme, and use it as a way to control, and abuse others that's the real issue, but let's not try to act like this shit didn't get as far as it did without this being the case.

Right? Big ups to Mrs. Bobye for NOT lying under oath. At minimum, that should just be the standard- don't lie. I think she's had to sit back for YEARS and watch the Duggars manifest a destiny that she and Jim envisioned for themselves. They were fundy royalty, until the Duggars got the show. I also have to believe that, while she "loves" Jim Bob, she loves the fact that her daughter was spared marrying a pedophile more. What saddens me is that Mr. Holt, a man who had the power and authority to do so, wasn't man enough to just go to the proper authorities, the moment he heard what was happening in the Duggar home. I give Mrs. Holt a very small pass because I know that spousal abuse isn't uncommon in that cult...but, if you're a grown ass man protecting anyone other than the victim, you're pretty pathetic.

Yes. Pedophiles exist in all of humanity. However, it's not idiotic to show the sociology and psychological factors that made THIS cult particularly suited to covering up for Josh. If you don't point out that this belief system...
* Made women/girls responsible for a man/boy's virtue.
* Was lead by a sexual predator (Gothard)
* Made women subservient to the needs/desires of men.
*Promoted a culture where a woman's worth was tied to her chastity, fertility, or ability to STFU-and-make-her-man-a-special-sandwich (that's a direct quote from Meech).
* Claimed sons were "arrows in a righteous man's quiver" to raise up a Christian Army...and dads should "do whatever it takes" to make a son "fall in line".
* Claimed men had the exclusive authority over their daughter's vag/purity/chastity/heart.
...then, you're hiding the label on a jar of poisoned Kool-Aid.
We prevent this shit from continuing in a sick cycle by educating people on how dangerous this bullshit is. If we learn nothing from the Warren Jeffs, Bill Gothards, Jim Joneses, David Koreshes, Brian David Mitchells, and Josh Duggars of this world, then what end is served? Had these men not used God to control their prey, this shit would've been far harder to pull off.

In many cases, I dispute that religious conservatives think sexuality is evil in and of itself. They think it is good within the context of marriage (how do you think they got all those kids?) Heck, even the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a sacrament; that is, when a husband and wife fulfill their wedding vows by banging, they receive divine grace.

Rather, I'd say Duggar-type fundies have a bad approach to it. Chastity is not necessarily prudishness, it's understanding that your sexuality is a gift from God and that you shouldn't misuse it. A Christian parent shouldn't be repressing their kids, but teaching them self-control.

Because, let's be honest: porn and having a coomer mentality also fucks up your brain. It's a major part of the reason fewer people are having sex and there's an increase in loneliness, inceldom, and troonery.
