The Queen back at Windsor after hospital stay

She is "in good spirits" after a one-night stay for preliminary medical checks, Buckingham Palace says.

The Queen spent Wednesday night in hospital for preliminary medical checks and is now back at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace has said.
The 95-year-old monarch returned from hospital at lunchtime on Thursday and is "in good spirits", the palace added.
The Queen was said to be "disappointed" after cancelling a visit to Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
She was given medical advice to rest for a few days, after a busy schedule of public engagements.
In a statement on Thursday night, Buckingham Palace said: "Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits."
The Queen was seen by specialists at the private King Edward VII's Hospital in central London, about 19 miles (32km) from Windsor. Her admittance is understood not to be related to coronavirus.
The overnight stay was said to be for practical reasons and the Queen was back at her desk undertaking light duties on Thursday afternoon.
The King Edward VII's is a private hospital in London's Marylebone used by senior royals, including the Queen's husband, the late Duke of Edinburgh, who received treatment there earlier this year.
It has been a busy period of official engagements for the Queen.
She was pictured hosting a Global Investment Summit at Windsor Castle on Tuesday evening alongside Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
An official record of the Queen's diary showed at least 15 other formal events during October.
On Wednesday, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said the monarch had "reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days".
He said the Queen was "disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland" - which would have involved an overnight stay.
She is expected to lead a royal delegation to the Glasgow COP26 climate change summit in two weeks' time.
Earlier this week, the Queen declined a magazine's award of Oldie of the Year, saying "you are only as old as you feel".
She "politely but firmly" turned down the award, but sent the Oldie magazine a message with her "warmest best wishes".

Maybe this is my ignorant American ass talking, but my understanding is that she amounts to a figurehead. She makes no decisions, calls no shots, and basically only exists as an institution out of deference to tradition.

It is comparatively easy to "reign over something" when you are not responsible in any way for the success or failure of that something.

I don't get it. Maybe I am too autistic to get it, but I don't see why anyone would fawn over a ruler doesn't actually rule. (Or even step in when the actual rulers are doing something boneheaded)

That applies in reverse too. Why would anybody hate someone who objectively hasn't done anything they could be hated for?

Republicans are unironic faggots who want to make us the equivalent of the French and the Germans, our lessers, they can rot if fucking hell for their lack of respect for the country and it's traditions.

I wouldn't call myself an ardent Monarchist, but I respect the Institution for it's economic benefits, international prestige and the fact it's an institution that links us to our past 1200 years ago, in a way a Republic can't. Canadians, Australians, Kiwis, I don't care if they abolish the Monarchy, it'd be ashame, yeah, but at it's core its an English/British institution and something that links us to our ancient past.

Well fucking played. Not sure if it was William's idea, or Charles' (though he would have at least approved it) or their handlers.

Now the brothers could have stayed apart, separate cars, kept excluding Harry and Megan. Instead they appear for a show of unity, smiling and talking and meeting the crowds. Now it gives Megan what she wants to be sure--a big photo op, a feeling of inclusion--and she'll market that to the hilt.

But it also takes something even bigger away from her--the chance to keep playing up the narrative of her and Harry being on the outs, excluded, ignored, and RACISM. Is it staged? Sure. Were they friendly in the car, or in the palace? Probably not. Doubtless more like those rock bands who hate each other, stay in separate hotels, have separate busses, don't talk before the show, but then on stage fake it and smile and look like they're joking and laughing. But it doesn't matter how staged it is. This appearance and a side by side walk during the funeral, and Will has done his part to be able to say for years to come "Feud? What Feud? We get along great. You saw us together at Granny's funeral. Now I haven't seen them in years, but that's because they've been busy in America of course!"

It might go a bit of a way towards taking some of the credibility out of the more salacious bits of Harry's tell all book, as opposed to if they were still publicly on the outs when it's published. Maybe they even did some negotiations, ie "if you leave out the bit about Charles or Phillip or whoever talking about black babys you can do a public appearance with us, even ride in the same car".

Someone finally realized in a Sun Tzu kind of way that the more you push Megan away, the more she will use it to her advantage. The more you give her what she wants, the less she gets.
