Fuck me, this chapter hits way harder if you have read the book. There are a lot of references and parallels scattered throughout this chapter.
Don't know how this one will end but so far it's my favourite canto by far. I do recommend reading the books before the cantos if you can.
Edit: It just hit me that it would be really funny if the next ID was Heathcliff : Heathcliff? but considering how he bit the dust at the end of the chapter it's highly unlikely.
For those who haven't read the book, the Heathcliff from a mirror world seems to have experienced it almost to the letter. He grew up both close to Catherine and apart due to their social standing. Both loved each other, yet Catherine could not imagine marrying Heathcliff. Instead, she married Linton because she believed that she could raise her and Heathcliff's social status by doing so. Where Limbus differs is in Cathy's death and Heathcliff's response to it. In the book, Heath returns rich after some years away, and he immediately begins his revenge. He gains control of the Heights by taking advantage of Hindley and his addictions. He then begins his revenge against Linton by marrying his younger sister to inherit their manor too. But in a tumultuous argument between Catherine, Heathcliff, and Linton, Catherine dies, lamenting how both Linton and Heathcliff have broken her heart. In the book, Heathcliff, completely heartbroken and driven mad by her death, focuses on punishing the Linton and Earnshaw bloodlines for the suffering that they have caused him and taking Catherine away from him.. But in Limbus, he not only blames others; he also blames himself (and the other versions of himself in the mirror worlds) for her death, bowing to hunt down and slaughter each and every version of himself. I really like how Heathcliff's revenge has been adapted here. A total self-destructive endeavor that leads only to more suffering.
