A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was shot Friday afternoon in Everett, and a package delivery driver is in custody, according to Everett police.

Officers and medics received a call at around 12:50 p.m. to respond to the West Mall Place Apartments for reports of a shooting, according to police.

The mail carrier was delivering mail and was confronted by another individual, according to Postal Inspector John Wiegand.

“A small altercation took place where unfortunately the carrier was shot in the face," Wiegand said.

The mail carrier was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, according to Wiegand.

Neighbors tell KOMO News they are shocked to hear about the shooting.

"It's just heartbreaking," said neighbor Jelani Jones. "I know him as the mailman, he’s a good dude. I can’t believe that. He’s always good with people in our neighborhood.”

Residents also said they felt safe in the building before the shooting, which they believe happened in or near the mail room of the apartment complex.

Around 4:15 p.m., the postal truck and Amazon delivery van were removed from the scene. An Everett police officer was following the tow truck that was carrying the tow truck.

Police did not confirm the shooter is a delivery service partner, but witnesses reported the man went to the office of the complex and reported he had just shot a postal worker.

Police said the suspect is expected to be booked into the Snohomish County jail tonight.

“USPS workers don’t let people in the area when they have the mailboxes open. The Amazon driver didn’t particularly like that, they got into an argument, which escalated to a shoving match, which escalated to the Amazon driver shooting the USPS guy in the freaking eye!!! Then he sat there calmly and waited for the cops to show up and claimed self defense,” a poster named Rich Ryan said on Facebook.

If this is the kind of mailbox I think it is, they have individual locking doors on the front and a huge panel on the back which USPS has the key to, so they can put everyone's mail into the appropriate cubbyhole at once. But when that's open, everyone's box is exposed.

e: they clarified it's a mailroom, still it's a question if Amazon drivers are allowed the same access as USPS deliverymen.

I can imagine why the USPS employee might get testy about some perceived rando trying to be around an open mailbox they aren't allowed access to.

e: also a funny detail, one of the Everett police precincts is literally next door to this apartment complex. :story:

I am going to guess it has to do with delivery drivers being dogged about how fast they can get through their routes. Doesn’t make it right but it sounds like Amazon would be anal about.

My apartment complex has a mailbox system like this, and complex management has had to send out emails telling tenants not to bother the mailman when he's delivering mail, because people where I live are retards and have had confrontations with the mailman over not being able to just grab their mail directly from him when he's got everyone's boxes exposed.

USPS workers get paid pretty decently because they work for the government, but they've got to deal with a lot of bullshit. A lot of ghetto bullshit.

They clarified it was in a mailroom, but the same principle probably applies: if the amazon driver was trying to drop packages in a part of the mailroom only USPS has access to I can see that setting off a fight.

I said the same thing reading the subtitle lol. The language just kept escalating past what I expected word by word. I'd have picked 'tragically' instead of 'unfortunately', but, you know.
How fucking hardcore is rural Washington that getting shot in the face is a "small altercation"? Are these fuckers out wrestling Sasquatches every weekend or something?
Everett isn't exactly rural, it's just a stone's throw away from Seattle. I spent some time living there, absolute shithole. Saw people lighting fireworks under a gas station pump canopy at one point, and passing by later to stomp out the box I'd stepped up a little dirt road to a shitty auto shop off the highway and instantly some shiny, raced up car with tinted windows rolls up on me.

I have to question what he shot the postal worker with since there is no update on whether the dude shot in the face died or not or even an identification of the driver. Really weird story. I tried looking up that Rich Ryan but couldn’t find him just some website for his failed bid for mayor.

Hell yeah, they gon' learn what a real monopoly looks like, how a real monopoly is enforced. Amazonians coming for those mailboxes.
