A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was shot Friday afternoon in Everett, and a package delivery driver is in custody, according to Everett police.
Officers and medics received a call at around 12:50 p.m. to respond to the West Mall Place Apartments for reports of a shooting, according to police.
The mail carrier was delivering mail and was confronted by another individual, according to Postal Inspector John Wiegand.
“A small altercation took place where unfortunately the carrier was shot in the face," Wiegand said.
The mail carrier was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, according to Wiegand.
Neighbors tell KOMO News they are shocked to hear about the shooting.
"It's just heartbreaking," said neighbor Jelani Jones. "I know him as the mailman, he’s a good dude. I can’t believe that. He’s always good with people in our neighborhood.”
Residents also said they felt safe in the building before the shooting, which they believe happened in or near the mail room of the apartment complex.
Around 4:15 p.m., the postal truck and Amazon delivery van were removed from the scene. An Everett police officer was following the tow truck that was carrying the tow truck.
Police did not confirm the shooter is a delivery service partner, but witnesses reported the man went to the office of the complex and reported he had just shot a postal worker.
Police said the suspect is expected to be booked into the Snohomish County jail tonight.

“USPS workers don’t let people in the area when they have the mailboxes open. The Amazon driver didn’t particularly like that, they got into an argument, which escalated to a shoving match, which escalated to the Amazon driver shooting the USPS guy in the freaking eye!!! Then he sat there calmly and waited for the cops to show up and claimed self defense,” a poster named Rich Ryan said on Facebook.
