Apologies if this isn't the best place to ask for advice or if this comes as as being too vent-y, but do any of you happen to have any for someone to wants to start art.. in his early twenties? I did always have an interest in art as a child but dropped it at some point for reasons that aren't necessary to detail, never got back into it- but the desire is still there. Just not the motivation I guess. As I got older and especially now I couldn't help but to think "It's too late to start now, I missed my chance" but then there's also the reality of "I'm going to get older anyway, may as well be older and have some skill in art."

But my issue is that I do not know where to start, how to develop the habit, how to turn that desire into motivation, whatever. Have any of you been in a similar position as me?

Nigga, i started art in my 30s. It's never too late to get into it so long as you're willing to give it a certain degree of commitment. Sure, it's good to start young and have more time to practise and hopefully some more formal training but you can learn on your own and it's not late to do it.

The real question is why you want to do it and what you want to do? As you say, you want to have some skill in art. But is that all? Do you have something more specific in mind? You want to make art for someone? Just for yourself? You have an autistic project in mind that you want to put into paper?

But if you want to know where to start, that's usually the hardest but i can give ya some advice:
  1. Draw a little bit every day. No matter what. Building the habit is important and with that you will train your arm and you brain to see things how they should be. Don't wait for the conditions to appear or inspiration to strike. Do it. Even if it is something small. Do exercises like drawing your own hand or 1 minute drawings.
  2. Set small goals. It's easy to get overwhelmed by your own mistakes if you set your goals too high. Do one thing at a time and then put all of them together.
  3. Choose a subject of study. What is it what you want to do? Draw people? Study anatomy and proportions. You want to do landscapes. Shapes and composition.
  4. Draw from real life. Stylized is attractive but if you want to get everything right, start drawing real people. From there your style will develop.
  5. You may be inclined to buy fancy stuff to start drawing. Don't. Just get 2 pencils, a ruler, an eraser and lots of paper. You need to focus on drawing a lot in the beginning.
I hope this helps. Starting with this seems overwhelming but after a time, you will get the hang of it. I could share a link to a lot of manuals and reference guides i have if you want to

I also started in my 30s. you just gotta do it every day. Drawing boxes and stuff is always going to be helpful, but you gotta draw shit that you enjoy too in order to stay motivated and have fun. and no matter how bad you think you are, you'll always be a better artist than you were yesterday. and also chris chan.

Another life drawing, and some quick ones I did during people watching. Its really hard to catch proportions while someone is moving, it's definitely a different skillset.

I never tried people watching but a lot of people tell me i should go for it. But i'm really shy and if someone notices i'm watching them i will certainly look away.

Still, it's interesting that since i developed my skills in art i find it fascinating looking at people

Just draw whatever you want, having fun is most important thing in this, like anything if you don't enjoy it you wont stick with it, has for starting, I would say construction and boxes, simple shapes will be your best friend in beginning, has for motivation, I wouldn't rely on it, motivation is fickle, and if you rely on it you might go months without drawing, I would say your best friend is limiting the friction, bring sketchbook and pencil everywhere, set up designated spot that already has your stuff set up, less you have to do the easier it will be to do it and less time your brain can fight you. And I have been in kinda similar situation, but benefits of starting late is you have advantage, and that you can apply things you learn pretty quickly.

@LURKER00 I think you have a lot more potential in you than drawing women with questionable limbic proportions in anatomy pouring yellow monster over their feet into a glass for you to drink. That's all. You make decent 2000s looking characters. Using them for fetish stuff doesn't look as cool. When artists go for coom bait or fuels for their fetish, I always find myself disappointed.
