"Post your Art" Thread

Apologies if this isn't the best place to ask for advice or if this comes as as being too vent-y, but do any of you happen to have any for someone to wants to start art.. in his early twenties? I did always have an interest in art as a child but dropped it at some point for reasons that aren't necessary to detail, never got back into it- but the desire is still there. Just not the motivation I guess. As I got older and especially now I couldn't help but to think "It's too late to start now, I missed my chance" but then there's also the reality of "I'm going to get older anyway, may as well be older and have some skill in art."

But my issue is that I do not know where to start, how to develop the habit, how to turn that desire into motivation, whatever. Have any of you been in a similar position as me?

Nigga, i started art in my 30s. It's never too late to get into it so long as you're willing to give it a certain degree of commitment. Sure, it's good to start young and have more time to practise and hopefully some more formal training but you can learn on your own and it's not late to do it.

The real question is why you want to do it and what you want to do? As you say, you want to have some skill in art. But is that all? Do you have something more specific in mind? You want to make art for someone? Just for yourself? You have an autistic project in mind that you want to put into paper?

But if you want to know where to start, that's usually the hardest but i can give ya some advice:
  1. Draw a little bit every day. No matter what. Building the habit is important and with that you will train your arm and you brain to see things how they should be. Don't wait for the conditions to appear or inspiration to strike. Do it. Even if it is something small. Do exercises like drawing your own hand or 1 minute drawings.
  2. Set small goals. It's easy to get overwhelmed by your own mistakes if you set your goals too high. Do one thing at a time and then put all of them together.
  3. Choose a subject of study. What is it what you want to do? Draw people? Study anatomy and proportions. You want to do landscapes. Shapes and composition.
  4. Draw from real life. Stylized is attractive but if you want to get everything right, start drawing real people. From there your style will develop.
  5. You may be inclined to buy fancy stuff to start drawing. Don't. Just get 2 pencils, a ruler, an eraser and lots of paper. You need to focus on drawing a lot in the beginning.
