Recent. For context in this video. This is after I won the Silver Print in the Battle Arcade. The roll here got me into a fog. The rest of the battle is crazy.
UPDATE: In the Battle Frontier, there really is no such thing as "the perfect team". Chances are, the AI wants to murder your entire team, it will do that, strategy be damned.
Even during my play in Emerald. The reason for this is that the algorithm has the probability of you getting hit with something like a critical pre-set.
Unless you created a save state BEFORE you choose to press "Continue", if you do so in the middle of a battle, the outcome WILL BE THE SAME EVERY TIME.
Gamefreak has made questionable decisions lately, but we need to talk about a longstanding issue that's created a volatile divide among Pokemon fans. Come jo...

This guy tries to do the “let’s look at both sides” approach but very obviously has a genwun bias. Not to mention cherry picking certain designs while ignoring ones that would go against the narrative. Also bringing up the “soul vs. souless” post from reddit kills the video. Besides gen 2 was when the sharper looking designs were phased out, you had Pokemon like Sneasel and Tyranitar but for the most part the Johto dex is pretty notorious for being full of simpler and cuter designs compared to Kanto’s.
Also the comments section is a huge genwunner circlejerk.

This post shall mix the fakemon theme of this thread wi the drama of these forums.
Around the time the fir starters of Galar were vealed (but no more, I should emphasise), Totally Not Mark made a Twitter poll on which generation had the best designs.
In summary: 'the poll pretty much said tha the best designs were up to Generation 4. I say that is because the monsters from Generation 1 tended to be tougher and more monstrous while being made through the process of adding imagination to rea life. However, later generations, in appealing to younguer generations, decided to make thing softer, rounder, and toy-based. My redesign of Scorbunny is more loyal to the design sensibilities of the original.' View attachment 2234852
In summary: 'every generation had both tough monsters and sof toys. Totally Not Mark also confused design and art style. His poll was also biased: Totally Not Mark based his commentary on ly Generation 1 when the poll, which paired up generations, showed that people favoured multiple generations. He also jumped to conclusions because Generation 8, a the time, only revealed 3 Pokémon.'
(Disclaimer: I am reuploading smaller but lower-quality versions of the videos that would not overwhelm the post. I backed up the highest-quality versions, though.)
I don't entirely agree with this mindset, at least not in the way that gen one is superior or anything, kind of don't really care for it. But I do think this explains some of my issues with a lot of Pokemon designs, especially starters. I wish they were more animalistic/realistic, as opposed to merchandisable creations.
The oddest thing about Pokemon to me, has always been their size and their weight. Do you know what the heaviest Pokemon is? Pretty much a threeway tie between Primal Groudon, Cosmoem, and Celesteela, at a whopping 999kg (2204 lbs). That seems like a lot, like wow, that's heavy! Except it's really not. Remember that in the case of Groudon, this is a Pokemon capable of shifting the continental structure of the planet, and yet the average elephant weighs around 7 times that! Even Copperajah, the elephant Pokemon whose ability doubles its weight, only weighs about 1350kg. Don't even get me started on height, and if a dev came out and said the only reason Pokemon are so small is so that when they came out with HG/SS they could have reasonably sized sprites follow the trainer, I'd believe it.
Like I know they're supposed to be monsters that fit in your pocket, that's the tagline, but they're seriously just big, sentient toys. I don't think that gen one necessarily did a better job of this, but at least there was a mentality about making Pokemon fit into the natural world, at least according to those three lostPokedexvideos. There was the idea that a Pokemon couldn't be made until Gamefreak could decide on the Pokemon's diet, what habitats they lived in, how they interacted with actual animals, etc.
I also feel like some of the comparisons in the video I posted are a tad unfair since a lot of them focus on non fully evolved Pokemon. Zorua’s evolution still has that menacing “old school” look and isn’t cutesy. Karrablast’s evolution definitely doesn’t have any soft looking features. I felt the video I posted would be better if the creator showed a variety of Pokemon from both the old and new artstyles that shows exceptions to the design philosophies to feel less biased. Gen 1 had a lot of “monstrous” Pokemon with the trademark sharp eyes but you also had a good handful of cutesy Pokemon like Clefairy and Eevee. Even Dragonite wouldn’t feel out of place in the “newer” art style.
On the modern design side you got simple designs but also plenty of “monstrous” and “realistic” designs. Fletchling and Pikipek deifintely look more simple than Pidgey but their evolutions are on the same level of detail and monsterous as Pidgeot, with more realistic anatomy.
Personally I think it’s just good to look at the entire picture instead of fitting everything into boxes,
Maybe it’s just my Unovabortion bias talking but I feel like gen v was the last time the final evolution of the starters felt like actual beasts. Even Emboar was able to balance being bipedal with a monstrous design.
I think it's the implication that Toxel looks like it's in a diaper. If you wear a diaper, it's because you shit your pants. Hence, if Toxel wears a diaper, it is technically a pantshitter. Then again it just looks like a diaper, Pokemon clothes both are and aren't actually parts of their body, and the Pokedex obviously makes no mention of it, so y'know.

It's the weird pouty lipped tongue thing that I dislike the most about the design, its just so off putting! Bulbapedia says might be based on a frog as well, I'm thinking its more of a salamander than a frog, but regardless- I couldn't imagine diapering a lizard, especially one with a weird pseudo skin diaper like this. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe it just sheds the diaper part off after it shits and regrow it?
I'll cut my autism off here, but that's the only real explanation I can think of.
I think they were just trying to play up the fact that it was a baby Pokemon, the first new one since Gen IV(like Togepi and Riolu, they were released in the same generation as their evolution, but like the cross-gen babies all three cannot breed, even with ditto)

What's weird about Toxel, is that it learns nothing. It has the moves it has from when it's caught/hatched, and then learns nothing for 30 levels where it becomes Toxtricity. It's bizarre. Even Magikarp learns moves eventually, but Toxel doesn't. It really feels like they designed Toxtricity, and then scrambled to come up with a pre-evolution so Toxtricity could have its two forms.
Does anyone remember the massive fan praise over a bootleg mobile Pokémon game's 'higher-quality animations', the mental gymnastics in attempting to justify how the animations were stolen, and the freakout over the mobile game stealing data?

I remember something to that effect. Was that the Chinese one? Or was that a different one? I remember Vinesauce covered a mobile bootleg at some point, because the translations/text were horrendously hilarious, but don't remember if those were the same thing.

He should've just showed art of Mewtwo if he wanted to prove a point about what the change in artstyle has done to the marketability of Pokémon.
(Shamelessly stolen from a SmashBoards post.)
HOME sprite:
At least in Mewtwo's case, the anime may have played a part in the change in artstyle, but Pikachu and Meowth also showcase the changes just as well.
(Note that using Origin's Mewtwo for comparison is kinda cheating since Origin's Mewtwo is more based off the game's, but the design does come back to Mewtwo later.)
And yet anime Mewtwo has different looks--not helped there's a second Mewtwo that had to be designed slightly to look different from OG Mewtwo (bottom pic).
Softer lines are being used, which makes everyone look rounder and less "rough".
His CGI remake model showing off his tumors for fingers:
Bonus Mewtwo:
Okay I just needed an excuse to sperg out about Mewtwo, but as you can see, Mewtwo goes from angery caveman kangaroo-cat thing to grumpy old mutant kangaroo-cat humanoid within 20 years.

At least Sawk and Throh's nebulous quasi-clothing meshes into their design. I remember being put off by them when Gen 5 was fist announced, but now it's like, whatever. I'd like to think their gis aren't part of their bodies but that would just raise of question of where they keep getting gis. Doesn't really matter one way or the other in the grand scheme of things tbh.
With Toxel however, it's so overtly a diaper that you can't really ignore it. On top of that, it moves like a baby and you get a free one from the Route 5 Daycare. You literally can't escape the fact it was designed to resemble a human infant. I don't begrudge Toxtricity fans for feeling like they were cheated out of a cool pre-evo.
This fucker has a higher base attack stat than both forms of rattata. Not to mention it has access to nasty plot (along with some decent special moves via TM including hyper beam) and hypnosis.
No joke this is one of the best pokemon to shiny hunt with and I never play through Gen 5 games without one in my squad. Not only can this guy put mons to sleep, but it can also use Thunder Wave, Super Fang and even has the ability Illuminate - which makes getting into encounters a lot easier if you're doing random encounters.
That's the thing I like about older pokemon games - they actually made pokemon that are useful for other things besides battling.
