Gen V was when this began, actually. The Liberty Island Victini and Reshiram/Zekrom were shiny locked. Gen VI also Shiny locked all legends obtainable in X and Y(The birds, Mewtwo, and the three main legends), and ORAS Shiny-locked Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, and Deoxys. Gen VII Shiny locked all Gen VII Legends and Ultra Beasts in Sun and Moon, then let the Ultra Beasts be shiny in USUM. in Sword and Shield the only Gen VIII legends not shiny-locked are the two new Regis, even the Galarian Birds are shiny-locked(Also so is the Keldeo obtainable in the game, it is one of the mythicals that still has yet to have ever been obtainable as Shiny).

The only use for it is on uncatchable 'mons like the Poochyena in ORAS. Everything else is just GF being retarded.

I can't help but wonder if that was to encourage people to use the Masuda method for starters. The mentality at GF seems to be to make the games as easy as possible - why not make it that you can only use the easiest method for starter hunting too? I might be reaching here, but I wouldn't put it past them.

I dont , was alluding to what you posted here as to how few actually go for it and how unfair it is to them short of either outright cheating or using some form of Arbitrary code execution since shiny versions of every pokemon exist, like the fruit punch-stained solgaleo and lunala that have yet to be distributed.

ORAS at least had some online distributions of its legendaries, like a shiny rayquaza and groudon, as an anniversary online mystery gift. They even gave out a the only legitimate shiny zygarde in celebration during that "year of legendary pokemon" they had for Gen VII. shame that ORAS was the last time they used online distributions properly.

Almost like *GASP* Automatic Updates that most developers post-2000 do. A scary and forbidden topic among Japanese developers I know. (just like Atlus)

Most people probably don't know who masuda even is, let alone the method, but yes it was a HUGE push for the improved GTN of GEN VII. GF unknowingly made completing the actual regional dex actually possible for the first time with just 1 copy of a pokemon game and much easier. Was also extremely noticeable for 2/10 eggs to be shiny on average this way.

Was also the last game Iwata-san had a hand in before his passing. Hence why Gen VII isnt nearly the train wreck of GEN VIII since he was the one holding multiple franchises and studio's feet to the fire to actually do their jobs and actually pretty talented. Hence the "unknowingly" because GF doesnt know what direction they want to go in, unlike Iwata. Who earned his stripes pioneering the wii, ds, and gameboy and responsible for making pokemon the hit it was right out of the gate alongside his work on the Mother franchise at the start of his career with consistent increases in quality and number of pokemon each release.

He was one of the rare cases of someone actually working through the ranks at a single company that just doesn't happen anymore due to the change in the times.

I do believe there is a way to spoof event distributions with the Gen IV and V games using fan-made servers, but I've never looked much into it myself since I got the event normally back in the day.

You can use a DNS exploit to get event Pokemon from the ds era games.

Either way, I still say FireRed and LeafGreen are great because they add a lot of quality of life updates and balance, while the Sevii Islands make a fun postgame.
If I were to recommend o newer game, I would suggest HeartGold or SoulSilver. Not only are tho sequels to the RGBY generation but also have a rich overworld that only benefits from the new quality of life updates these remakes have.

I meant like... since I only played Red and since there is the whole library of games now, what is the best Pokemon game since Red that is an exemplar of what the series has to offer.

Gold and Silver are the ones that are like two games in one, right?

Yes. Honestly the remakes are where I go. Platinum has a fun game but if you haven't played HGSS then do that or if you have a 3DS you can enjoy a well done 3D pokemon game with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Both of those really take it to the next level with you eventually being able to physically fly on a pokemon in the overworld.

 
I have a spicy opinion that I don't have too much of a problem with shiny locking. They usually give out the shiny variants as events some time during that generation and you can get previous generation shinies when they flood each game with legendaries. Reshiram and Zekrom were able to be shiny in ORAS, Xerneas and Yveltal in Ultra Sun & Moon, and Zygarde, Solgaleo, and Lunala in the Crown Tundra.

I have a bigger problem with not having in-game repeatable methods to get old mythical Pokemon. Off the top of my head only Deoxys, Celebi (Pokemon Crystal on 3DS VC), and now Keldeo are available in a game. Really hoping they incorporate the Darkrai event into a post game chapter in Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond.

Platinum, HGSS, and ORAS are also the games I suggest to a returning player. They pick up where someone who quit after Gen 1 left off and are the better games for in game content. Ultra Sun and Moon are also solid and the post game is a good send off to the Gameboy and DS era Pokemon games, but said post game is kind of meaningless if you aren't invested in the old era of Pokemon.

...pretty much. Saying anything more would technically be a spoiler, but HeartGold and SoulSilver would be the best follow-up.
If you want only the best, try Black & White, then their sequels Black 2 and White 2.

More looking forward to the hall of origin arc since the darkrai chapter was in D/P via the cresselia arc.
The member's card and oaks letter were actually distributed once and was a pretty okay story for what it was.

Though they will likely pull an ORAS for the Postgame if they are worth anything as a dev.

Play HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black 2/White 2, Emerald, or Platinum. If for some reason you want to play a game from the 3D era, play Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
I personally disagree with everyone suggesting Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Emerald is far more fun IMO.
