Just finished an impromptu replay of OG Blue version on my 3DS after watching OneyPlay's LP of it this past week while I was sick with a fever (mostly had it for background noise). Accordingly, instead of spending inordinate amounts of time coming up with meaningful names like I usually would I just went with whatever nonsense popped into my head at the time, hence wonders like Scrungulio the Venusaur and Bzzybop the Magneton. Quite refreshing.

I can still scarcely believe these games are what kicked off the franchise though, goddamn what a mess. Still hold the theory that it was really the hyper-aggressive marketing and general encircling paraphernalia (anime, TCG, other spin-off games like Stadium) that pushed things forward and not so much the games on their own.
I mean, in the broad sense yes, but one of the strongest pieces of the series has always been that PvE and PvP are equally viable off the same system, combined with great character design (even if it's not always backed up by great character art, but if Touhou can do it, Pokemon certainly could to begin). It's a system that adapts very easily to additional mechanics and new Pokemon, allowing for a system to grow steadily in complexity, for fans to add on whatever they want, it's really robust.

Not to mention, if someone had just finished Blue, their first game ever, and you gave them sword and shield, they'd be able to play the game still, 20 years later. If you tried to play a digimon game from today after last having played one in the 1990s, you'd have a very different experience.

Speaking of design, one thing I never really took note of before was how many trainer sprites in OG Kanto wielded whips...

The tamer and Rocket classes make sense, but it looks really weird with everyone else.

It's a bit of a leftover from the original Capsule Monsters concept. Originally instead of Badges determining obedience, it was a Charisma stat the trainer had, so they were like lion tamers trying to convince them to do things.

I'll give them this - the boxart is miles better than SWSH. It's a nice change from just slapping official art on the box and calling it a day.

I'm honestly conflicted - on one hand I want to give the DP remakes a chance considering another company took it on board but I also know Masuda had his grimy hands on it too and I've been let down enough times to not get the games on release date any longer (as well as the fear that Masuda added his trademark shiny lock to the starters and catchable legendaries because why give full odds hunters a fun challenge, am I right?).
That reminds me, I somehow managed to find a shiny Giratina in my latest playthrough of Platinum. Would be a shame if it were impossible for me to do the same with Palkia in Shining Pearl.

I know, right? I remember hunting for my shiny Giratina a couple of years ago and the adrenaline rush I got when golden dragon Hades slid across the screen was amazing. Shiny legendaries are, nine times out of ten, a wonderful experience to find - especially if you're only 12 or 13 like I was when I got a shiny Registeel in Emerald. It saddens me that kids who only know about the newer games aren't allowed to have this experience with the box legendaries (idk if they shiny locked any of the others in SWSH because I've avoided them like the plague). At the very least the remakes gave the 3D models their colours back - they always looked like they'd been left to bleach in the sun.

Speaking of which, I love how shiny Zygarde looks, kinda stupid how it was locked behind an event for such a long time. Only the story-relevant legendaries are shiny locked in SwSh.
Edit: these lovelies are shiny locked and I hate it

I kind of envy you, because shiny Giratina is pretty kickass. Did you find it on your first try, or did you soft-reset to find it?

I never have the patience to soft reset for shinies. I once tried it for a shiny Aipom in Diamond on a honey tree, and after a half an hour, I couldn't take it anymore.

I soft-reset, but it only took about 10 tries. If you really want a shiny Giratina and you have Sword or Shield with the DLC, try Dynamax Adventures, they have a 1% chance of giving you a shiny.

Veteran shiny hunter here. I'll tell you right now that the patience one has to have to do full odds shiny hunting can only be honed - especially if it's on games pre-Gen 6 where the odds were one in 8,192. It's something only mega autists can do and even if you manage to develop a taste for it the community is pozzed by sjw shit like most of the pokemon community. If you really want to try it I recommend the gen 2 starters in HGSS - you can actually see if the starters are shiny before you choose them and encounters stack up really quickly considering you're seeing three pokemon at a time instead of one.

But if you wish to do it the Weenie Hut Jr. normie way, do the SWSH DLC or Gen 7's wormholes - you can get the Shiny Charm easy and that should cut out a lot of time. Just stay away from the normie hunting community - they're boring and usually fake over-the-top reactions like aDrive does. They're also pozzed by SJWs too.

In Gen V there was a distribution at Gamestop for a Shiny Giratina(there was also ones for Dialga/Palkia), but unless you find a copy of the download event cartridge(which is pricey since it wasn't meant to be obtainable to consumers), it's long gone. I do believe there is a way to spoof event distributions with the Gen IV and V games using fan-made servers, but I've never looked much into it myself since I got the event normally back in the day.

I got those. I don't think I have any extra palkia but I do have an extra giratina I think. Its been a while.

Do you guys remember the fucking legendary dog event for Gen 4? I got so many. Dear God. I'd go to gamestop with my pearl, two diamonds (had an extra), and platinum to get one of the event dogs. I went three times because they released at different times and then they decided to release them all again over wifi. I had so fucking many, had to have been at least 7 sets of all three. I'd give away entire sets of them, I still have two- one is mine and another is on hold.

I was fucking furious when they decided make the events code based.

To be honest, shinies aren't that big of a deal for me. Some are cool and all, but not necessary. All of the shinies I have that weren't guaranteed or from events I just found randomly.

The was another time my lack of patience got the better of me: I tried that shiny radar thing in Diamond (where the grass wiggles, I don't remember what the name of it is, but it's on the Poketch) to catch a shiny Phanpy while using a shitton of Repels. I got to like 35 battles and then the Repel I was using ran out. Instead of instantly using another one, I lost focus and ran straight for the wiggling grass, only to get interrupted by a Bidoof. Bam, chain ended. I was so mad at myself, I started reeeing and running around the grass.

...And then, the game took pity on me, because my next encounter after that was a shiny Machop. I nicknamed her Chyna...I should have named her She Hulk instead.

I actually played around with the Ultra Wormhole a bit, and have a few shinies from that. I don't own SwSh, and I don't plan to, unless I find a used copy for dirt cheap.

Oh shit, I forgot I got those! They're on my copy of Ultra Sun, I just haven't looked in a long time. Now I don't feel as bad.

Shiny Galar Moltres looks like if Ho-Oh decided it wanted to maliciously frame Moltres, so it put on face-paint and disguised its wings to go burn down multiple cities and forests, and eat small children.

I did som event injections on official distribution ROMs. I even made my own distribution.
Of course, that is local Wi-Fi...

Nothing boils my piss more than, doing the dynamic adventure stuff, getting the shiny charm cause it'll up shiny odds. Giving up catching shiny legendaries, then having the last legendary to catch (Yveltal) being the ONLY shiny legendary I could get

The whole concept of "shinylocking" is retarded.

Why would they kneecap themselves with such an obscure gameplay feature for no reason starting in Gen 7? No one goes for a shinydex.

1: so they can distribute the shinies as special events, no point even trying to hide this one
2: So they don't have to do cutscenes over twice for the one in a few thousand chance it's a shiny
3: So people don't get hung up at these key points in the story/game and keep progressing.

Shiny locks actually started in Gen 5. I guess it’s to keep the colors of the Pokémon consistent with the cutscenes, but it’s fucking stupid that things like the starters are shiny locked now (until you breed them, that is).

There are people that go for a shiny dex, but those people are few and between. Never underestimate the autistic dedication people have for this game.
