not even a Magmar (which pissed me off as a kid, I don't believe a single trainer even owned one in-game).
To me, Magmar's always sort of been the odd one out in RBY. I'm pretty sure you're correct about no trainer ever using it in-game because I can't remember a single one that does so. On top of that, I didn't where you could catch one off the top of my head, and actually had to google it. You can catch on Cinnabar Island in the Pokemon Mansion like I had been thinking, but only in Blue. I didn't even know that it was a version exclusive. To make matters worse, it has a very low encounter rate and only appears on certain floors of the building.

The way I see it, Magmar is so underused that it is entirely possible for a new player to think that's not a Gen 1 Pokemon at all, and is instead a Gen 2 because that's when you get an almost guaranteed chance of encountering it. The only other Pokemon that comes close to being the same way in my opinion is Electibuzz, but I'm pretty sure at least one trainer uses it in RBY at some point along the way.

Funnily enough, Electabuzz is rarer than Magmar. Magmar is a 10% encounter rate in Blue, but a 5% encounter in Red.

I was sure there was a trainer in Yellow who uses it, but some autist actually recently made a graph of how many times particular Pokémon (122 species) were used by trainers in Yellow and neither Electabuzz, Magmar, nor Scyther were listed, which lines up with my memory, as well as the prehistoric Pokémon except for Aerodactyl because Lance.

They set up magmar and electabuzz to be rivals in the anime. I always thought that was weird. Then we got electivire and Magmortar elvolving off similar Items in gen 4.

The fossil variant of Magmar was OP as fuck in the old days of TCG. Smokescreen could and would stall even the most powerful opponents and do chip damage.

It could probably stand with many of the newer cards despite the massive power creep that has killed Pokemon TCG. Which most older cards cannot claim to be able to do.

Has anyone in this thread seen RadicalSoda's videoes on Sword and Shield? I haven't seen them but, if the titles and length of the videos are any indication, he is going way too hard on what boils down to a pretty mediocre entry in the series.

Yeah but sometimes tims gotta tism, the main problem is the guy didn't separate his videos into sections so it's sorta one giant massive clusterfuck of a vid

Speaking of pokemmos, wouldn't some of them be in some hot water due to making a profit off of the games?
The PokeMMO I played a while ago required ROMs to work. It's essentially a very game specific emulator that skates just this side of legal. Nintendo would probably still win but it's an interesting way to try and keep the big N off their back.

Slugma and Magcargo is similar. You only see them on Cycling Road in Kanto in Gold and Silver, but they're super common in the fire cave in Ruby and Sapphire. Since there aren't a ton of Johto Pokemon in RSE a lot of kids growing up thought the slug was from Gen 3. Don't get me started on Houndour/Houndoom that's in the same boat. I hate it when Pokemon are withheld until late game when your team is set, which is one of the things that Sword and Shield got right for a change.

Graphics and arguably story aside, I wouldn't put SwSsh anywhere near the bottom. Probably more like directly slap bang in the middle. Hopefully the Gen 4 remakes adopt some of Gen 8's QOL updates and especially mixes up the pool of Pokemon because lol at you if you didnt' choose Chimchar in Sinnoh and wanted another fire type.

I consider Sword and Shield the weakest main series games thus far, but I wouldn't say they're horrible and utterly unsalvageable. There was some good stuff in there, the excellent roster of new Pokemon being chief among them.

Soundtrack and characters were the highlights for me. The gym challenge being structured as it was really makes me give a shit about the gym leaders.

Despite their shortcomings and seeming laziness in some of their titles recently the one thing Nintendo always gets right is their Soundtracks.

Putting Houndour/Houndoom into Kanto only was such a fucking mistake that I still can't believe they actually did it, and didn't even fix it in the remakes.

Reminds me that I should make that a goal of mine to trade over a Houndour to one of my games (probably Gold) so I can test it out in the main game.

I haven't touched my Silver Nuzlocke in a while now, but I finally got my own 3DS and was able to download them from Virtual Console, so I'm probably going to start it over since I guess there's nothing I can do to transfer over save files as such (which would've been convenient). I mentioned it as such when I first started it anyway that I didn't expect to actually finish it, so my second attempt will be more serious.

It's also nice that it's made competitive more accessible than ever. You can basically turn any pokemon into a viably competitive one if you know what you're doing.

Finally, taking your starter into the battle tower is not necessarily a noob move.

It really is the most baffling mistake of Sinnoh. I mean, it'd be one thing if it was just a minor detail that never brought attention to it, but there's a fire type elite 4 member!

I mean, it's probably because there's more fire types in in Stark Mountain (still only barely enough) and they realised too late that there wasn't enough in the main game to adjust, but it's still just a weird ass thing for a game in the prime of the series to forget.

Funnily enough, it is actually possible to transfer your GBC mons to the 3DS now, but it's kind of a drawn out process.

I was talking about the Virtual Console files themselves, but I don't think it's possible to transfer the save files to someone else's 3DS without just outright jacking the SD card for yourself. Eh.

Been playing Pokémon Puzzle Challenge now that I bought it off VC. Outside of having to reposition my thumbs a bit due to how the 3DS controls are laid out, it's fun. Literally no different from Pokémon Puzzle League, just no voice-acting outside of Pokémon cries, and you whittle down the opponents' HP with chains and combos instead of stacking garbage blocks on their end (think 2P is the closest to that for this version). The graphics are pretty cute, I have to say, and the thumbnail Pokémon victory and defeat animations are pretty great. I actually felt bad for defeating Lance because his Dragonite's defeat animation is it crying into its hands and looking like a big baby.
