“I like shorts, they’re comfy and easy to wear”
It’s especially bad when they force in memes, such as repeating that line, the Psychic who says “over 9,000” in XY, the guy who makes a “one does not simply walk into Mordor” reference in ORAS, or multiple NPCs saying “my body is ready.”

That's just the localization team trying to be hip and cool. They've done it in other Nintendo games as well like LoZ and Mario.

It’s weird just how awful Game Freak and/or Treehouse is at writing NPC dialogue. Compare the main series game NPCs to those in Colosseum and XD, where they actually sound like humans.
Might be because compared to the mainline games Colosseum and XD tried something different which gave greater opportunities for characterization. Take Pyrite Town for example, the whole plot line is essentially a Western with the criminal gang taking over a rundown town in the middle of nowhere, an ineffective police force, the mayor's kids are held hostage by the gang so he can't do anything, and a silent lone gunman come to restore order to the town. Everyone plays their part in the storyline and they feel more human for it. They're a breath of fresh air compared to the normal games.

It really says something that the only reason I talk to random NPCs is for the odd chance they'll give me free shit for no reason or the even rarer actual sidequest. Hell, that's another oddity about Pokemon, the extremely light use of sidequests, an RPG staple.

I thought something has been up with the odd NPC dialogue since Gen VI, but I didn't think much of it. Then SwSh brought in the thought-bubbles and it just really showed how much of a try-hard the localized dialogue has become. I wish I could've taken a snapshot before the dialogue changed, but I think some of you might know what I'm talking about when I mention there was this NPC walking around Hulbury telling himself to just keep walking, don't think of anything else, just keep. Walking. Something to that effect, like it was so clever and so relatable.

It was the strangest thing I had ever seen in a Pokémon game that made me put down the game for a couple of hours and go read something, anything, because it was so dumb. And I'm still swearing nearly twenty years later that the oddest thing I've ever encountered in these games was that I saw one of the (G/S red panda lel) Legendary beast sprites running around past the trees and a rooftop in Ecruteak (complete with the hopping sound-effect) after first waking them up from Burned Tower.

That's a good point as well. I think that good NPC dialogue and interactions would go a long way in giving the region (and the story in general) flavor, conflict and identity. In a good JRPG, NPCs are often written with worldbuilding in mind so that every bit of information you get from them ends up getting you a bigger picture of the world around the character. Pokemon NPC dialogue in general often sounds really sterile whenever it's not trying to be a meme:

I think this is why the NPC dialogue that gives you pieces of that region's lore is some of my favorites. Before they started spoon-feeding you that information I think starting in Gen IV, you would be told something by an NPC, but then wouldn't encounter what they're talking about until later in the game, and by then you might've forgotten what they said or just never made it a habit to talk to NPCs. The Johto games were really good about this because they kept that air of mystery and wonder about these legendary Pokémon that were big enough to block out the sun and yet used to live amongst people. It would get my imagination running (even though by then I had seen Pokémon 2000 and knew what a Lugia was, but not really Ho-Oh nor Celebi, and barely the Unown at the time).

I really do miss that sense of awe and wonder that made Pokémon so captivating back then (next to the "catch 'em all" challenge). Maybe I just grew up and none of that surprises me anymore, but I dunno, I just miss having my imagination run wild when it comes to a mysterious backstory.

This is reminding me of how much I like the unown ruins in johto. When I was just a kid playing gen 2 for the first time it creeped me out how at first you've got rando npcs walking around, but then once you finish the first tile puzzle everyone just vanishes cause the unown start appearing. It left quite an impression on me. Also that one radio signal.

Zero Dawn was one of the most boring and ugly games I have ever played.
I can confirm this. Even SwShit at its worst still serves as better eye candy than this crap.
Horizon Zero Dawn in a nutshell.jpg

It was mediocre game with generic and ugly visuals whose only main gimmick was "hunting BUT with robot dinosaurs!" Only reason it got any praise at all was because of some socio-journo nonsense about "breaking traditional standards of beauty myth" and having ugly lesbos and ugly everything, even ugly monster robots. The world building doesn't even make a lick of sense as a survival setting. Even with SwShit's flaws, at least the world feels like it tries to make some sense (although it becomes horribly underused) and has some pretty aesthetics in some areas at least.

The game's so crappy it makes me actually want to defend SwShit out of spite.
Broke: photoshoping link in
Woke: Chroma-keying him in footage walking with high quality layering like a chad

for me it's much less about graphical quality if you do that comparision, and more speaks about how galar really lacks an id, takahashi had a strong idea of what the hell the bionis and mechonis are and their shadows would effect the climate of every area. With SWSH I still have no clue what galars core idea is other then the league being similar to the world cup and a shallow approximation of britbong shit
Could it be due to incompetence or that they were simply too rushed in development that the core idea ends up feeling aimless? The britbong also felt shallow and under used at times in terms of how they could've set up some pokemon and themes. Especially the sporting theme which kind of nullifies the potential uniqueness for each gym leader's look and the styles of their arenas.

On a side note, am I the only one bothered that the trainers have to stand in front of their pokemon while they're gigantamaxing? Wouldn't it make more sense to have them as far away from their pokemon as possible instead of in the line of fire.

Unown is one of my favorite Pokemon when it comes to lore. The fact that the Unown radio signal sound similar to the item used to summon Arceus makes for a neat 🤔 moment. The best lore moments in Pokemon come from piecing together information from relatively little evidence instead of everything being spelled out for you. Like the gen 1 lore on Mew/Mewtwo, Victini and Type:Null (to an extent).

Just wish they could make Unown more viable in battle or have it so that when you catch them all it results in one of them evolving into a sphere of Unowns when put into some sort of ruined pedestal or something.

The Unown are by far some of the creepiest Pokemon in the entire series, and they could've been way creepier. To cut a long story short, it's speculated that they were originally meant to be the victims of some kind of disaster that might've been a reference to the Hiroshima nuclear bombing.

I gotta say I'm highly skeptical it goes that far, but I have to admit, the fact that besides the Unown, Doduo, Ditto, and especially Sunflora are the only Pokemon that spawn in the beta version of the Ruins of Alph does make me think this theory has some merit to it.

And when there are sidequests, it's usually something either painfully easy ("Show me a Water-Type!") or something tedious, like collecting the Zygarde cells in Sun/Moon. That actually is an interesting idea for a sidequest, but you weren't given any indication of where they all were or what time of day they spawned.

It was already incredibly fucking obvious considering they shat out the DLC reveal that looked 90% finished when the game was barely 3 months old, but here you go.

Gamefreak stooping to the levels of EA? Say it ain't so. At least now, none of those rushing to defend Gamefreak can on this front, not unless they're willing to say what EA does is okay. Anyways, always had the feeling they kept the list short just to make more money down the line which is absurd, people eat up Pokemon no matter what medium. This is going to ruin them in the long run.

Isn't all this fucker is famous for translating sakurai's articles from japanese

it won't even be the DLC itself that will fuck them, but the type of culture live games are that will damn them, being constantly forced down this construction belt bullshit just causes creative burnout in companies and series. that in addition to the series being so samey will lead to shit down the line, it always does.
I once read in /vp/ that Shigesato Itoi would make for a great scriptwriter for Pokemon. The more I picture it, the more I agree.
I don't want itoi to deal with the development issues of making games again after earthbound 64 was such a crapshoot. Mother 3 was great but I just don't think the man can take anymore of the crunch and other shit that it entails especially if he was a lead writer.

I remember when Cracked made up a bogus theory in their “list of offensive references of 9/11 in popular culture” article that the desert route in Unova was a 9/11 reference and it was caused by a meteor with Kyurem in it. At least this theory about the Unown has actual merit to it.

It's a very weird coincidence, but that's not the case at all; the Unown were originally intended to be aliens. The Hiroshima theory is interesting though, but I don't think GF would ever think of putting a reference to that in their game.

Honestly I think SwSh is getting a bunch of crap it doesn't deserve.

The National Dex thing is annoying as all hell but this isn't the first time Gamefreak has done this (and everyone but me jerks off to gen 3) and outside of that the actual games are a huge step up from Sun and Moon. The Gyms actually felt like a real professional sport.

IDK, in some aspects they are better and yes gym battles are better than the island challange, but honestly they both even out for me in terms of quality. they are bad to me but in different ways. then again that might be due to me seeing the same shit since X and Y and seeing them keep falling the same pratfalls over and over.
