I'm sure game freak is panicking right now, my bet is that the launch event was canned since they are pulling their hair out to try to save the absolute shit show of the fan base right now. If they showed up in public like they planned on it would just of made the situation much worse for them.
Blame is probably flying at every one, all parties are trying to figure out what to do. It really doesn't matter if gen 8 sells, because at this point Gen 9 needs to be good enough (or at least give the appearance of) to make sure Pokemon doesn't have the fan base want to kill each other otherwise it will get to star wars levels of bullshit.
That's the best case scenario, that SWSH will be The Last Jedi of the series where enough people get fed up with the bullshit to the point where they have to change face. Though, there's also the worst case scenario where The Pokemon Company just decides the main series isn't profitable and pulls the plug on it altogether to shove it all onto mobile (everything else about the IP already has been by now).

The only thing that keeps me from thinking of that doomsday outcome is Nintendo. Since they have a business share in this whole thing, they undoubtedly would like to have a say in the matter when things would come to a head, since they obviously want Pokemon titles on their systems.

While I wouldn't consider myself a Pokemon fan, I generally like playing the games. I didn't initially care about Dexit or any of the initial outrage but then I started watched an early interview and it was just bizarre. As more trailers started coming out it became obvious the game was ripped from Sun & Moon, I started following GF more and their responses got weirder and weirder. No questions were ever answered about the games and it started to get creepy. Then the trailers came and the game looked like a remaster of Sun & Moon. The interviews got weirder too. Seeing men in their 50s sitting with Pokemon plushies looking real nervous was strangely fascinating. It was obvious something was seriously wrong. Then the news basically trinkled to nothing (which has never happened before, they usually reveal 80% of the game) and then it was obvious this game was gonna be bad.

So far it looks like they cut 60% of the old roster, megas, z-moves, GTS, and a ton of misc features. It's no wonder they are having a complete meltdown the game got leaked. Now I hear they tried a failed PR move called "#Thank you Gamefreak" , which started trending in the middle of the night from a bunch of newly created twitter accounts, yet more money wasted. I just love watching this train wreck, I can't stop following it. The fan base spergery, the dumb PR stunts, the cringe all around. It's all so perfect for a trashfire.

Some of these have to be ironic right?

Might need a suicide watch after these people realize that they won't be able to transfer their Pokemon into Sw/Sh. There's a lot of them like this.

SWSH will be profitable either way, but the problem is game freak is in a real possibility of isolating fans by making every future hype cycle be like swish and smash roster faggotry. that will cause burn out in the core fan base if every cycle is like this shit show and only leave game freak with fair weather GO fans.
Either way
Nintendo will keep it around as its a cash cow

Yeah it feels fucking weird, Masuda gives 20 different answers to questions when he talks about the Dex like he's Todd Howard. Near the end they say something like "we'll see when the reaction to sword and shield after it releases is known" after months saying its policy this moment forward. It fells like their is company politics that came to a head in gen 8 that outsiders can't really see.

I think by far the weirdest decision for me (as far as the actual core gameplay is concerned) is Dynamaxing, which is literally just Mega Evolution on a timer with some extra fluff (that is mostly bad).

Rather than fix up some broken Megas, patch up some underwhelming ones, and introduce new ones, they...rebranded them? There were plenty of Pokemon who needed their Megas to be any good, like my boy Gallade, but those are just gone now because...uh...reasons.

Like I don't understand why GF insists on throwing the baby out with the bathwater EVERY. FUCKING. GENERATION. Most iterative series gather up the best of each iteration to create a refined, optimal iteration. This seemed to be the case with Pokemon until around Gen 5, where it instead became a game of "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, but also ignore everything that sticks too".

On one hand they want a "limit break" for all Pokemon but then they make the Gigantomaxes locked to specific creatues within a species so your beloved Corvoknight can't become Mega Corvoknight, it just becomes regular giant Corvoknight because dude lmao I dunno.

The whole thing is just stupid, honestly, but that's nothing new for GF. Should have just made all Pokemon able to "Mega Evolve" by syncing up with their trainer like in Pokken while some get new designs/more specific stat changes when they do so.

Also it bugs my autism that Dynamaxing turns your Pokemon into a fucking enormous, skyscraper-sized kaiju but it can still be defeated by a regular-sized Poke a few levels higher.

Gamefreak realized they could save on time and money by cutting new mega models. Now they can just re size the models they already make.

I think the mega designs were cool as fuck, but they were shit for balance. I just wish they would stop adding these annoying gimmicks in the first place.

They didn't make it though. It was a poketuber named MysticUmbreon who made the hashtag - https://twitter.com/MysticUmbreon94/status/1193124786185965572

You can claim all you want that GF wasted money, but you're gonna need proof that they did all this. I mean, sure, you can claim it all you want, and hey, I'll agree that MU could be shilling hard - But you're gonna need proof of that buddy.

Honestly, there are good reasons for not having Megas - it put a lot of pokemon in a box, at least with Dynamaxing, every pokemon species has a chance at using it and frankly, Megas could be easily be considered to be a broken concept - it's easy to say "fix, patch up, and introduce new ones" but there's a lot to consider especially when those elements need to have a lot of trial and error.

Yeah, just ignore gigantamax.

Kinda figured that. You can say alot about GF, but I really doubt they have it in them to just pull a stunt similar to Bethesda like that.

YES!

I was waiting for someone to say that!

... Yes, I'm that immature.

Although, to be mature again - At least GF hasn't pulled a Bethesda and shipped games that barely function and rely on the fans to fix the problems.
I'm sure I'll get someone fighting me on how it's only a matter of time though.

Yeah, just ignore gigantamax.
There are 48 Megas and roughly 20 gigas. If we are taking GFs word that model rigging and textures for old models was the cause of the cuts and content issues, this makes perfect sense. Less things overall to animate and you can call it a new feature.

At least Gamefreak themselves will probably cut them next gen anyway.

IIRC Game Freak said something along those lines regarding LGPE when they were being hyped, specifically saying that they plan on alternating between mainline titles like XY and LGPE, and then backtracked on it when the more casual entry did terribly in Japan in terms of sales and reception. Seeing as how the leaks have reached Japan and the fans there are taking it as badly (if not more so due to the Dex cut not being explicitly mentioned outside of a sole Famitsu interview and never brought up outside of social media until the leaks showed HOW badly the Dex was cut) it’s not that surprising to see them backtrack on this.

I'm not particularly worried. They have already shown off that they care capable at making "perfect" pokemon game. They did is with black 2 and white 2. If they followed what they did with that and applied all the god like kino features they have shown in the game so far, everyone is happy.

I am actually glad this has happened. With this shit show going like how it is, maybe theyll open there eyes to the SINGULAR issue they have. You cant throw a handheld budget at a console rpg anymore. If they had given them a proper budget there would be no issue. They are too used to spending nothing and getting everything. Hopefully this will break them.

Town can't get patched by fans but it certainly fills the whole "Barely functioning" part of the statement
Not to mention Giga breaker or whatever couldn't work on steam due to a missnamed EXE file

Okay that's reassuring then, once again Japan saves a series from stagnation

As long as it gets expanded as much as BW2 did to unova and not ULTRA CHANGES
Obviously like how KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO mons were shoved into unova's dex I expect the nat dex to be added into a hypothetical gen 8-2 but I hope they make the map better because so far it looks kinda alola tier barren and very bare bones so hopefully like how Black and White 2 added areas outside of Unovas mainland to begin we get something like that.

Looking at the map doesnt really tell you much because b2w2's was a literal upsidedown Q. We really have to see when the game comes out. Nat dex not withstanding if sword and shield is par with normal black and white content wise then that would be a good outlook.

The Japan finding out factor is undoubtedly what's hitting the hardest. Not only is it home turf, but it cannot be understated how little most of them over there knew about this. The rest of us have had months to mull over the implications of dex cuts, and while the leaks heightened tensions considerably due to the sheer severity of it, we still had that long amount of time to digest the potential gravity of the situation beforehand. The Japanese, however, will have barely over a week. So the sting of the news and the realization of how GF effectively kept them in the dark all along will be extremely fresh in their minds come D-day. It's the horror scenario GF's been dreading.

So, anyone get to keep/lose any life long friends along the way?

I always liked Bulbasaur the most but some how Nightsky my Charizard has stuck around the longest, along with my Vaporeon, Sly, that I've had since Fire Red/Leaf Green.

I really can't remember my past teams, but Nightsky and Sly along with two Blastoise's and a Mewtwo got me through White Tree Hollow and Black Tower because their levels were so high. Sly and Nightsky are still in white, I have to move them up. I can't find one of the Blastoise's (IIRC her name was Shelly) or the Mewtwo but I know they're around somewhere. It kind of sucks they won't be able to tag along, even though I haven't used them in ages. I also found my old Rayquaza from Emerald that I'd named Diamond, has an empty attack slot so I'm certain I taught him an HM, he's in the bank.

I always make a point of saving all the teams ive used if i can. Theyll be in home so its not like ive lost them.

my og platinum team was wiped when I put my soul silver in my pants as a 11 year old, they went throught the wash, slowly fucking the save. Its why I put my games neatly to this day and also why I get protective of my team. Kinda why I don't trust this pokemon Home/bank shit since its all out of my control for storage since the cloud could fuck itself over at any time
Luckly I saved my first shiny, a rapadash, in my platinum game due to losing that for abit.
as for "leaving anyone behind", I wont be transfering anyone foward for now my reasoning being the following
when I buy a second switch I'll play Gen8 if I'm bored between modding in emulators and using a browser if one is available. if they would release one with the national dex that would be my last since I always intended the switch to be my drop off point for the series.

I’m relieved Malamar made the cut. I said earlier in the thread that in Ultra Moon it held its own against Ultra Necrozma and pretty much defeated it single handedly. I’ll also never forget it one-shotting Giovanni’s MewTwo Y. I still remember thinking “Oh shit, here we go” when it was brought out and then “Oh wait, it’s over?” the next second. It was a bit like that scene where he just shoots the swordsman in Indiana Jones.
