So, here's a question to change the mood - If you could design a PKM game, or a PKM esque game, what features would you choose?

Personally, I'd like there to be different rivals, but your 'starting' rival would be different based on which starter you chose, and the story would be slightly more tailored to that rival. Give some replay value, ya know?

A few points, many of things I'd like to see in a game.

  • RSE was the last game that needed a remake, since that one the game has been fairly mechanically stable (in Gen three attack type still determined what stat they used for damage, so all fighting type moves used attack, all psychic used so atk)
  • Transition the remake title into sequels, every Gen has a new region to open it, and a region sequel to accompany.
  • Next game would be Diamond 2/ Pearl 2.
  • Gen 4 starters get a Gigantomax form, Gen 2 starters get a Sinnohan(Sinnohian? Sinnohese?) form (I think both shifting the triangle and giving them a new triangle would be cool)
  • Region has significantly changed since the first game, new gyms, the underground has been developed into a large area with a town and several new areas. Maybe even make the underground a significant part of the plot. You go through the region in a different order.
  • In general a Max of five new legendaries per game. With smaller and smaller pools of new Pokemon 10+ legendaries that can only be caught at level 40+ are essentially dead slots to me for playthroughs.

In terms of a new game:

  • Andes mountain region.
  • Alien invasion of Deoxys like alien and alien parasite pokemon.
  • Two villain teams, Team Believe, UFO Hunters supernerds that want to welcome the aliens here and make their presence known, and Team Glow, Men in Black types trying to drive off and cover up the aliens.
  • Go back to the versions changing the story by focusing teams, but also justifying the version exclusives. One version you catch pure aliens with pokeballs designed by Team Believe, they want to use them as a bridge to communicate with and understand the aliens. The other version you catch (or purposefully infect and catch) naive Pokemon infected and controlled by the alien parasite (like shadow Pokemon, but more akin to regional forms), but they disobey like over leveled Pokemon until you mind wipe the parasite at Team Glow's base.

a lot of what I would do would be more so to make the world feel alive
  • set the region in South America, nothing too specific so it doesn't have the problem of feeling like a disney land version of a country like kalos and Alola did though the primary inspiration would probably be brazil
  • make more pokemon interact in towns and routes, I would love to see a kid chasing around his growlith or something around town without being on a grid or looking too robotic. Not anything "LOL ERMGERD OPEN WERLD POKEMERN" but taking the top down structure and making them feel lived in rather then sterile like it has since the 3ds era.
  • Have some side quests with characters who can leave an impact, pokemon has sucked at having this for the most part, maybe one or two per town so you can feel you have an impact in the lives of people other then just getting a badge
  • have a story with good themes but learn to consolidate stuff into a short time, black and white did that well but every game since then has had either a hollow story (x and y) or takes too long to get something out of good themes which could of been way shorter (Sun and Moon). I don't think 10 minute long cut scenes are a good fit for the game pokemon has been
  • As my pitch has mostly been around making the world feel lively, have npcs feel unique in terms of dialog, its a general jrpg problem but pokemon has a lot of npcs have similar tones for dialog. I would take the Mother route and try to have every minior dialog try to illicit an emotional reaction of some sort, amusing, intrigue or even sollum since pokemon can get like that with stuff like the ghost girls or dex entries already.
  • I like the idea most come up with for being able to start at a city and each gym leader having different teams depending on how many badges you have, but it would probably be hell to balance for the entire game, maybe have the first 4 be linear and the other 4 be in any order sorta like a link to the past?
That's all I got

I would mainly do the following things.
- Do a new region, doesn't matter which.
- Do a full pass over all existing pokemon for a cull/rework (we don't need 4 or 5 identical flying/normal types like Pidgeot). Try to rework redundant pokemon into new typing to accomodate, but wind up cutting a bunch.
- Doing a full mechanical pass over the game, primarily expanding the Pokemon Center and Pokemon Daycare. No more hidden IV/EV values and a reduction of those numbers. More input and data for breeding, upgradable facility to try and get better pokemon from the process. Possibly a rare item to increase the shiny odds. More accessable items to increase/decrease EV values.
- Wild pokemon in the back half of the game will start with some EV points already allocated, so they aren't substantially less effective than pokemon you've already had for a while.
- Second region that opens up post elite 4, similar to Crystal where time has moved on and all of the old characters are aged up a bit.
- Unlockable hard mode, where in all trainers' pokemon have approperiate EV values (as opposed to just Gym Leaders, Rival, Elite 4 in the current games, I think).

With all this talk about what someone would do if they made a pokemon game, makes me wonder if anyone here tried dabbling in making a fan game.

Well... To be honest, I kinda want to make a pokemon Esque game. I've been looking into things like the pokemon asset packs and such (since I suck at programming), and have been designing monsters for it for a while as well as culling some things and the like.

Ladies and gentlemen, Stealth Rock has finally been (kind of) nerfed!

No more 4x weak mons getting cucked just for switching in. No more decent hazard removers getting rejected because the very hazards they're set to remove fuck them over. It's beautiful.

Loving that blunder policy. I can already imagine the potential of such an item. Especially for fire blast and hydro pump users.

I know I’m late to this but I can’t fuckin’ believe the ONLY starter Pokémon that got in from past Gens is Charmander/Charizard. At the VERY LEAST I thought the cut down Pokédex would:
  • Include every starter Pokémon from past gens
  • Include every legendary and maybe every “mythical” Pokemon
  • Include all the Pokémon from Gen 1 (they seem to really like pleasing the genwunners)
And somehow they didn’t do ANY of these.

Not to mention all the Gen 1 assets were made for Let's Go, so I'm actually surprised that there's as little Gen 1 fan-service as there is. Refreshing to see a decent spread on the Galarian dex, although it's smaller than I hoped.

Anybody who wants to take a crack at making their own Pokemon game, the spoiler below contains some useful links for Pokemon Essentials, an RPG Maker XP Pokemon engine. A lot easier than ROM hacking, speaking from experience.

Pokemon Essentials Wiki replacement
A huge tutorial YouTube series
You also need RPG Maker XP, which is $5 on Steam as of now, and goes that cheap regularly.

Oh boy, I can't wait to transfer Articuno and Volcarona to Sw/Sh! They'll finally have a chance to shine!

That's what it really boils down to every time I see one of these legitimately great QoL improvements that I've been wanting for years. "YES! now so and so Pokemon can- Oh... Right..."

Of all games to finally give out these improved features, it just had to be during this dumpster fire...

At the very least, if GF hasn't burned to the ground by then we can expect the following:

1) These mechanics/items make it into the next games (the one thing that GF does keep in next games most of the time are items like this)
2) Fan game makers will utilize these items
3) Pokemon Showdown will definitely do that.

Same thing with Moltres, who would benefit from both the boots (for obvious reasons) and Blunder Policy (its best STABs have very shaky accuracy).

Honestly most of these designs suck dingo dick. Don't get me wrong there are a few pretty good ones (Alcreamie, Bolthund, Frosmoth line, and Grimmsnarl to name a few), but a lot of them seem to be putting concept first with the actual design becoming an afterthought. Many of these mons have interesting concepts (e.g. Intelleon, Rolycoly line, Dragapult line, and especially the fossils), but the execution is mediocre at best and horrendously ugly at worst. This was a problem seen in Gen 7's mons as well; many were based on obscure creatures (Crabominable is a literal yeti crab), interesting concepts (Alolan Persian being based on inbreeding for appearance, namely with actual persian cats), or both (Bruxish is a triggerfish that incorporates dazzle camouflage into both its colorful design and ability), but ended up with some of the worst designs in the franchise's history.
Another issue people have pointed out is that many of the designs have become too humanoid, namely with the starters. Furrybaiting aside, this contradicts the previously-established concept of Pokemon being essentially souped-up wild animals, and just hurts the overall design of the Pokemon in question.

On a more positive note, I'm curious as to how the Blunder Policy will affect competitive. In particular I wanna see how Battle Spot (assuming it returns) reacts to the new item, as inaccurate OHKO moves are popular in that meta.

Once again, furries ruin everything. Ever since Lucario they've been more and more blatant with the furry bait. I thought it couldn't get any worse after Zeraora with it looking like a literal living fursuit, but then Cinderace happened. By fucking god I never thought I could hate a starter to such a degree as that abomination.

So you would make sword and shield? Only things missing are second region and hard mode.

I really like a lot of the gen 8 designs. I only really have a problem with the colors on some of them, but the shiny variants usually fix them like Grimmsnarl.

All this meta talk doesnt mayter because this fucking chad is going to shit down all your shitmon's throats.

yeah thats my whole problem with them as well
Some of the concepts I really like but are really poorly executed, especially when you realize these pokemon are paired with ones of previous generations. sad thing is if they just if just refined enough the concepts could of been done better. that and if it was more consistent with the previous gens, since while I was okay with designs overall of all previous gens even if I had issues with pokemon like incinaraor, it's just is a massive art style shift.
well that and some of them feel like older pokemon ideas but redone in Galar, in that way the new pokemon feel unfocused, its caught between trying to evolve old concepts and creating new ones, stumbling in the execution for both at least for me.
It's not a case of "Old pokemon good, New Pokemon Bad" for me since I haven't really disliked an entire gens designs before like I did this
Now with the National dex I wouldn't give as much of a fuck since I could just ignore the new pokemon I didn't like and just take the ones I did like I did for gen 7, but we all know how that went.
Now I'm more interested in the response to all this leak stuff rather then the game itself since game freaks is caught between a rock and a hard place with how to handle this stuff

Is Masuda okay? I don't want him getting sick ala Sakurai. He's probably extremely stressed and nervous because of the death threats. I know the Japanese work ethic is absolutely insane.

He is culpable for some things yes. But the other GF/TPC people are at fault as well not just because we'll never get uncut Japanese pokemon anime dvd/blurays for their fuckery.

No he's fine, Nintendo isn't calling yakuza favors until next week
but in all seriousness the guys gonna be okay, guy eats fancy diners and shit all the time, and yeah it might get a toll having everyone shit on him, but I dont think he's in fear for his life since no pokefag is as crazy as the koani guy and would burn game freak down or anything.
He's probably thinking of "Okay wtf do I do, this marketing season has been an absolute shitshow"
personally he should just take a advisory role or do music at this point, staying in the public spotlight has gotten him in so many gaffs it's insane.
