I see what you're saying. It has been years since I played the games so my memory is quite fuzzy. I still wonder if an edgier spin off Pokemon game would work, especially now that there is no console and handheld split like before.
Digimon has done a decent job to make a few games tailored for older Digimon fans. Digimon Cyber Sleuth was an excellent game and then you have Digimon Survive. Not quite all the way for adults but it's the closest they've gotten so far. So it can be done. Would probably take more thought process though. I think it's doable but they would need to take extra care. You wouldn't be able to get away with a lot of things with adults that you can with kids.

Honestly what completely killed it for me was the hours long obligatory tutorial, the idea of having to do it again kills me.

Like, I'm the first to say all pokemon games have a pretty easy story mode overall, but the way sun/moon hold your hand was honestly unbearable.
The only good thing about Sun & Moon was Team Skull, but that isn't saying much.

I'm so mixed on Alola. There's so many things I absolutely adore about the region, but then there's so much that's just, awful...

The setting itself, regional forms (so glad Galar's at least carrying that on), the new Pokemon both in design and the worldbuilding for both them and older mons (the dex entries are some of the best in the series for this), the original story is surprisingly dark with a psychopath mother wanting to fuse with an inter-dimensional abomination, and the Ultra Wormholes were what ORAS's shoddy Delta episode wished it could be with its crappy explanation of why OG Hoenn didn't have megas but the remakes do. And the second games go even further by showing us where the Ultra Beasts come from, with some pretty damn disturbing implications for a Pokemon game like Guzzlord's homeworld.

But then you have shit like the worst handholding in the series (the entirety of the first island is just a neverending tutorial), unskippable cutscenes for a goddamn RPG, railroading to the point where you can't deviate from the main path more than 5 steps because fuck exploration, the second set of games being the absolute worst third versions by a country mile with few notable differences to make going through the game again worthwhile, and the differences that are there completely butcher the original story and several main characters (Lusamine and her kids in particular).

I feel like the unique content in US/UM could have really been incorporated into an extra episode in Sun and Moon. Although, I did like the Rainbow Rocket episode.

So apparently the TCG's recent "holiday" set, Hidden Fates, is setting up to be one of the most expensive sets I've ever seen. The most recent release, two blister packs containing 3 packs of Hidden fates, a promo card of either Mew or Mewtwo depending on the blister, and pin of said Pokemon that costs $14.99 MSRP. Oh, and since it's a "holiday" set these blister packs and other "value" products are the only way to get Hidden Fates packs. There are NO booster boxes of Hidden Fates for sale ANYWHERE since that's how the release was meant to go.

And the "expensive" part I mentioned earlier? It's all from people buying out stores and reselling the product for $25-$50 per blister on sites like eBay, even the Elite Trainer Box (which isn't out until the 20th of September) is now going for around $70-$80 despite going for $59.99 at places like Target and Wal-Mart.

As to why it's going for that much I blame it having this son-of-a-bitch in the set, it's currently going for $400-$500 per copy.

I completely forgot about that as I went through the game because goddamn was I bored out of my mind. They focus so much on kids that it can makes it insufferable for those who actually know how to play it

Sweet fucking lord how much are you going to beat this subject into the fucking ground

Probably until the game is released or the nat dex fanboys get tired of stroking their hate boners

It's hilariously sad that G/S/C are the only games where you are given the option to completely skip the catching tutorial. They had more faith in their fanbase's intelligence than they do two decades later.

It's nearly September and we've seen 17 new mons not counting regional variants. I want to believe we haven't seen much because they don't want to spoil it all like Alola but given their track record with just about everything else thus far...

Earnest question, what do you all like so much about the Pokemon videogames? As someone who's familiar with the gameplay style but gets his jollies from more tactical turn-based games I can't understand how it stays fresh and appealing game after game. Is there something I'm missing?

While hadn't played Gen 1 & 3, I had gone through each of the other mainline titles when they came out.
For me, its returning to a format I enjoyed growing up with, while retaining both a recognisable design with older mons, while seeing what new things they can add.
Spinoff games had the added benefit of trying new things game wide, but personally can't get into anything for mobile (only thing game wise on there is Sudoku)
As its aged, I've been playing less and less of the games, with both X & Sun needing to force myself to finish; couldn't get into Ruby at all (neither original or remake), and Ultra Sun remained unfinished.
SwSh has the benefit of first mainline for console, and at this point only curious to see where the series is going after the recent events.

I guess it's the features that GF adds such as the Poke-Amie, or the OST for each gen
As someone who mainly focuses on the competitive side of Pokemon I'd have to say it's the abilities/strats and gameplay for each Pokemon team.

It's the many pokemon that are out there that appeals to me. Some of the designs are quite awesome in my opinion and that is why I like it. Not so much the franchise anymore but the Pokemon themselves still draw my attention

Basically this. I'm normally not big on RPGs as a whole but there's something about Pokemon that hits a sweetspot for me. Instead of always having the set cast of characters, every playthrough can be unique with who you choose. That and as a zoologist at heart, running around with a ragtag team of 6 weird and wonderful creatures is a pleasing experience by default.

I love pokemon and have been super loyal to the franchise, I've played all the games and put an insane amount of hours into them all. That being said, now that they've made the exp share go to all party members I find it difficult to go back to the older games because my attention span just isnt in it. I don't really play it much anymore, the new games aren't my thing.

However, for me it all boils down to cute animals i can own, pokemon, digimon, viva pinata, Chao gardens... list goes on. Every few months I get a burning desire to play Viva again, I would gladly die for that game. The food chain is hella lit even if the syrupents keep coming into my garden to devour my sweet innocent Mousemallow's.

If more games like Viva or Chao Garden (sonic) came out I'm sure the variety would force game freak to actually try a bit harder. It's a shame there aren't more games like those...

For me, it's the environment and the comedy.

For me It's almost the opposite, I feel like they've made the experience share way too viable in the newer generations. I went through my entire USUM run without turning it on once and it always felt like I was at disadvantages and under leveled. In the older generations handling myself is a lot easier.

There's something about the new EXP Share that I don't see people talk about much. At least in X/Y's case, they NOT balanced for use without it, at all. If you leave it off and avoid other BS elements like O-Powers and Amie they legit become one of the hardest games in the series.

First EXP Shareless run I thought it was just my team being awful since most of the chosen mons were pretty bad, but sometime later I did it again with a far more competent squad and I was still getting my ass handed to me repeatedly at later points.
