My LG run is doing alright.

My current team is a level 37 Nidoking/Charizard/Pidgeot/Dugtrio and a level 26 Jolteon. I don't forsee any future issues.

The question is, for my gen 2 run shall I A) Play Crystal (which I've never played before) on VC, or should I play SoulSilver, which I have never done before?

For Crystal vs HGSS, it's about preference really. The Gen I/II games are very different from Gen III onwards mechanically in most aspects. Which is one of the(many) reasons why, back in 2002, they were unable to make Ruby and Sapphire backwards compatible with the GB/GBC games.

Gen II it is easier to grab a random Pokemon and jump into the game, since natures are not a thing and all stats can be maxed out with that era's equivalent of EVs(Stat experience) just by fighting a lot. However gen IV has some nice perks like abilities, the physical/special split, and a wider variety of moves and pokemon.

Also while HGSS has the Gold/Silver encounter tables and stuff like the fan-favorite Mareep, the Crystal encounter tables have a wider variety of Pokemon throughout all of Johto, like having all three starter types available on non-starter Pokemon before the first gym, being able to get Teddiursa and Phanphy immediately after you get Pokeballs, and Sneasel being moved to Ice Cave instead of being exclusive to the end-game Mt. Silver.

Basically in return for not having a few Kanto that can be found in either Gold or Silver(not both at once) plus Mareep/Flaaffy/Ampharos, Remoraid/Octillery, and Girafarig(which can all be found in both Gold and Silver), the version gets both the Gold version and Silver version exclusive Johto Pokemon.

My mum got me Ultra Sun (and a pokeball 2ds!) for Christmas and I finally beat the E4! Onto the post game with Rainbow Rocket and all that and I'm having fun. It pulled me in slow at first because I was playing Miitopia a fuckton but then I got into it after successfully chaining a Shiny Stufful, then bumping into a Shiny Ledian (that was my first Pokémon encounter that day), and then chaining for a Shiny Cutiefly! Finally fucking getting the hang of chaining so I'm probably gonna go for a couple more. Gonna take forever to fill my dex, unfortunately, as my copy of Sun which has all my Pokémon is God knows where.

edit: how the fuck is this a powerlevel, bitch

I know I'm late to the party on this, and some people won't care 'cause they don't like things at all, but because of the Global Mission I started trying out the Battle Agency and it was pretty neat.

It's basically free festival coins and rare candies for battling with...interesting borrowed pokemon.

They are really hard to mix and match. X & Y's clothes were better in that regard.

i will always love that chatot shirt tho, and i love the fact that the game gives you literally everything you need to be a neck beard with a flame Hawaiian shirt, a trilby, and cargo shorts.

i undid it, i realize were talking about Pokemon so if we were giving out bad ratings then this entire thread would be rated :autism:, but in a good way.

interesting borrowed pokemon

the borrowed Pokemon thing is easily the most user friendly thing Pokemon could have done with there late game battling since now people dont have to dive into the incest and drug filled world of competitive Pokemon breeding.

Bred myself a shiny ralts in ~50 eggs or so and now I'm trying to get a shiny charmander, I have some 5IV Timid Trace Ralts + one shiny 5IV Calm Trace male Ralts if anyone is interested. I'm also giving away 15 or so 5IV Jolly charmanders with DD, Dragon Pulse and Outrage and two 6IV ones with same egg moves, first come, first served

So guys, is USUM at all groundbreaking? If Platinum wasnt worth it, would USUM be? See, Gen IV's sequel game had to fix a big mess it made, while not really adding squat. USUM tried to fix what was not broken, and as usual, adds too much emphasis on gimmicks rather than actual funness.

Why can't they just program something akin to Random events or something, Like a mystery of a Talking Pokemon or something.

Not really. This is definitely not a Black 2/White 2 scenario where they made a brand new game out of an existing region. This is very much Crystal/Emerald/Platinum style, where its the same game just with tons of additional content shoved in there.

Personally I thought Platinum was pretty fantastic (fixed the dex, the surfing speed, massive postgame and good trainer rematches), and in many ways I think USUM does the same. The region feels packed with little sidequests and secrets, with solid rewards like Totem pokemon and good items or move tutors to find during ingame play. The festival plaza is way easier to use and far more useful; I have facilities that instantly train any of my Pokemon up to their max EV values in that stat (or I can reduce them to 0 for retraining), instantly max happiness, receive daily bottlecaps and gain about 25~ levels a day. Combined with stuff like the ease of getting legendary pokemon with good natures thanks to the Ultra Warp Ride and its been really easy to train up tons of competitively viable pokemon. If you're into playing on battle spot or just raising cool stuff in general, this game could have a bunch of appeal to you.

That said, its not perfect. If you weren't impressed by a lack of places to battle in SM, USUM might not win you over, which I always thought was supposed to be the point of 3rd versions. The rainbow rocket postgame is sweet, but short. The battle agency is pretty fun but only if you make sure to register people on your VIP list who are also leveling up, or you'll get BTFO by the overleveled computer. And I think that despite individual trainers having pretty solid movesets and the totem battles being very fun, there's a lack of powerful postgame trainers to battle like in games such as Platinum, HGSS and BW2. Combined with missing out on some content in SM (the postgame Looker storyline), and in some ways USUM feels like its lacking.

Definitely not groundbreaking, but I think overall its a pretty solid Pokemon game. Not my favorite but probably a solid top 5.

ultra sun and moon basically fleshed out the almost non existent post game to the point where even the average Pokemon fan can still play after they beat the game and they wont get bored.

edit: i should add however that the game is still bullshit in leveling since the highest level place to grind, without going through the long cut-scene of a ultra wormhole, is around level 60ish (and even then they arent much higher in level). hell even the elite four is just strong enough to make grinding them a pain (they do have cool encounters like your fans showing up tho). also the jump in difficult with the Giovanni fight was so insane that i had to break out my ubers and even then his mewtwo was still very strong.

That was pretty refreshing, to be honest. I was steamrolling Giovanni's team and thinking it would be a cakewalk before Mega Mewtwo X began shredding me right back.

It is really annoying that in the generation they introduce Hyper Training, they make it such a pain to actually raise your pokemon beyond level 70~. And this was after Blissey bases made it such a breeze to max your pokemon in ORAS. If I didn't have a level 5 Rare Kitchen I'd be totally boned on getting stuff to 100 (speaking of, if anyone needs that facility we can just trade some junk and you can buy it for your own festival plaza).

For those wondering, the Celebi event is patched in like this in the International versions of Crystal Virtual Console game:

-Once you enter the Hall of Fame, go to the Pokemon Center in Goldenrod City(aka the one that was replaced with the much larger Pokemon Communication Center building in the Japanese version of the game)
-After you enter, move one tile to the right and try to exit. A nurse will walk up and hand you the GS Ball
-Give the GS Ball to Kurt in Azalea Town
-Wait until after Midnight in-game, afterwards Kurt will hand it back to you
-Go to the Ilex Forest and put the GS Ball into the Shrine
-Celebi will attack you. It is level 3o and is capable of being Shiny(It was previously the only pre-gen V Pokemon that couldn't legitimately be Shiny in Gen VII)

On another note, like the Gen 1 VC Mew event that was handed out in Japan and Europe(but not any other regions in the world for some reason), when transferred to Gen VII it will have 5 perfect IVs and be considered a Fateful Encounter.

First they were able to find a way to include Stop n Swap, and now you have the method to unlock Celebi that they originally programed, but decided to dummy out for the sake of being mean pricks.

It was always, ALWAYS "Har har! Its a super duper secret how to get this Pokemon and we will tell you eventually, but when we do, its just a simple event you gotta go to to Toys R Us!!! Hurr hurr!"

Can you imagine the scene if the Mew glitch was discovered as early as 2000? They would have denied it so hard.

@TrippinKahlua to be fair even the owners of the original Japanese Crystal didn't have it easy. The GS Ball event was only available via download using the GBC-to-cellphone attachment for a very small window of time, and looking at the sales numbers only a very small fraction of Japanese Pokemon Crystal owners had the accessory, let alone a compatible cellphone at the time. To further twist the knife, the Battle Tower was only accessible by connecting to the mobile network at least once, otherwise it was locked off without cheating. So a large chunk of the players over there never were able to access that either.

So I guess there are leaks, idk how to feel about their legitimacy but I like the bunny and want it to be real. I like the others too.
