Pokemon Crossroads merges Kanto, Hoenn and some Johto. Would any one be interested in playing through it book club style and seeing how our playthroughs vary?

Looks interesting. Assuming the regions keep their assigned starters I'll be doing Hoenn first so I can mount up with Mudkip and Taillow.

I have to get my GBA emulator figured out though before I do anything. Normal speed is excruciating to me outside of battles, but fast forwarding on my new laptop even at 3x totally fucks the audio unless I select the "unbound" speedup option, which fixes the audio back to its normal pitch but is way too fast to the point of being impossible to control. It does this on mGBA and VBA. On my old/shit computer (using VBA) this wasn't an issue, and it doesn't happen in MelonDS either.

We were going to do a mono bug type group play. Butterfree fans united against the faggots using metagross! I thought having access to the two regions (three?) regions would give more options.

Why not turn the sound off? You can probably set the gameplay speed with a limiter.

I feel like Mono Bug on it's own can't get too far. If only because there's not that many bugs ta go around - there's 17 different lines total from gen 1-3.

Why don't we make it interestin', and have it go Mono a Mono? See how different overlooked and underutilised types fare? I'd happily do a poison run - for some reason, a shocking amount of my faves are poison, even though I have no special reason to like the type itself.

Doing group playthroughs on a mono type we select ourselves could work.

I suggested bug and this rom hack because it gives you access to 11 early bug types and we were talking about Butterfree like mons and still using them in late game over stronger stuff.

As long as the rom hack isn't some tranny infested story game that wants to lecture you on eco communism I don't mind what we play. It would just be interesting to do a book club of pokemon games and give me a reason to pick them up.

Fuck it, might as well. None of the other romhacks are doing anything for me except for Clover, which I'm stuck at the poison gym, so I need a break from that.

I can do that, I play mono-type from time to time anyways. I'll do Mono-Normal

A fellow bugbro. I prefer the rarer bugs to the Route 1 guys, but I always have a Bug-type in any team I make. Scizor, Heracross, Golisopod, Leavanny, Volcarona, Armaldo, Escavalier, Scolipede, and Galvantula have served me well throughout the years. I also especially love any romhack that gives more love to the bug type. Usually by making Flygon or Yanmega Bug/Dragon, or letting Drapion be Bug/Dark, or just adding cool bug-type fakemons.

Cons in my area used to have a Pokemon Gym Leader thing and during the Gen 6 games, I got to be the Bug-type gym leader. I built a competitive mono-Bug team with Mega-Scizor as the ace. Shit was so cash.
My boi Drapion is a bug in spirit, tho.

I started Crossroads to see how it works and got loads of jank.

It forced me to start on Hoenn. I got a Treeko and went to the first center, which has a door to Kanto. Walk down to pallet town with the package for Oak. Oak tells me to stay out the grass. Gives me a Kanto starter, then I talk to Oak and Blue flies off into the sky because he's supposed to walk in and demand a pokedex. It's all fucked but funny.

First encounter was a caterpie. Second was a weedle. I don't know if this hack has the full pokedex but I'm happy with this. I'll head back to Hoenn to get wurmples and a surskit before I do the gyms. If I can time the exploration right I would like to do 2 gyms in each region then do the next 2 in the other. I don't know how it balances levels.

Might abort Crossroads and find a different rom hack. By "modern" design it means they ruined the game by making your team cheat. Caterpie felt sorry for you so it hung on.. fuck you game. Just fuck you. I don't want the game to cheat so I don't lose a battle. Sand attack spam is every where and crit rates are insane. I got 3 crits in a row at one point.

Whatever they did to balance this has made it piss easy.

The duality of man. (Seriously though that was fucking quick, from last night to now, wtf)

-------------------------------------------------------

So just an FYI, website tells you if you hold select before the title screen it'll switch you to the other version on the fly. You don't have to start in emerald.

Also this hack (like many others I've noticed that have also been talked about on here) is using something called Pokeemerald-Expansion, which is where your qualms about the hack being "modernized" is coming from. To me, I don't mind it that much, it's just that idk if the hackers are doing this on purpose or if it's the default setup regarding EXP Gain, but every romhack that uses this seems to have that Gen5 leveling up system where you get less points when facing the same level enemy when your pokemon is at a higher level. This hack has that as well, as I'm grinding my Rattata and the Metapods/Kakunas are giving less EXP the higher my Rattata's level is going. As I'm typing this, it's at LV10 and only getting 42 EXP when killing a LV5 Metapod/Kakuna when normally they would give you 50/51 EXP. At LV9 I was getting 46 EXP. By the time I get to something like LV15 it'll dip even lower. It's an unnecessary change that just makes grinding MORE of a slog than it already was.

I really, really, really fucking hate the game cheating. If I lose a fight I want to lose it fair. I don't want pikachu turning on God mode so I don't lose. Every time it happens I feel pissed off.

Is there a way to turn it off?

The EXP thing is stupid. It's supposed to stop you over leveling but it makes early game a nightmare. I needed 3 level 10 pokemon and had to do a slow grind to get them. The version also doesn't fix encounters from the splits, so I can't find a surskit in Emerald because it doesn't exist in that game until post game news alerts.

lol so I found a cheat that i probably shouldn't have with this hack

When you encounter a pokemon via wild battle and you get to the menu where you can choose "Battle/Bag/Pokemon/Run", press the "Select" button on your controller and it takes you to a blank menu where you can give your pokemon whatever moves/ability/HeldItem you want and also give it max stat points.

Moves are listed by Index number, so use this chart as a guide. Items are as well, but they are indexed differently from the standard list, as Premiere Ball is listed as item 5 and it isn't on any other official list.

Abilities use the same index as this though

Speaking of EXP restrictions, has someone made a ROM hack where you flat out stop again EXP if your Mon is way overleveled than the enemy? It would be like how killing gray mobs in World of Warcraft don't give you EXP. I did hear about some ROM hacks have level caps based on the number of badges that you have, so you can't grind out to be overleveled compared to the next Gym.

To my knowledge there are games where this happens. PokeMMO is one of them. Infinite Fusion has a setting in the options menu for that, and I know some other hacks like mariomon and I think "Heart & Soul" do the same thing too in the options, although they might be set as Nuzlock options.

I noticed that Polished Crystal is removing some stuff.

Time-based fishing: https://github.com/Rangi42/polishedcrystal/commit/1046416ddb78d34fa3269424d9a101ef99d99ab8
Megalovania: https://github.com/Rangi42/polishedcrystal/commit/1efda06e56fc30d73657e56709a7258ba75054c4
The Pokéathlon construction site: https://github.com/Rangi42/polishedcrystal/commit/3d478b20bb53e35d8f31a8e38b93a9d8b48ab0a4

I ended up making a copy of my dewoked source code that restores time-based fishing, which became the copy that restores interesting stuff that polished crystal later emoved. I can probably restore Nuzlocke mode, too:

every romhack that uses this seems to have that Gen5 leveling up system where you get less points when facing the same level enemy when your pokemon is at a higher level.
Ironically, Sour Crystal removed such a system: https://github.com/SoupPotato/sourcrystal/commit/1910dc9faa32ca206fe09e575aea255a792b3839

My copy actually restores the Gen 5 EXP system, too. I find thi system useful in levelling up lower-level Pokémon. I believe that, plus thi system being more modern, is the reason why that levelling system is prevalent in current hacks.

I’m so tired of the new format and it hasn’t even been 96 hours.
Dont worry they will add yet another anti-pult tech card so you can have 10 of them in your deck just to end up making pult stronger by default next set.

More "quirks" regarding the romhack

You are able to freely go from one region to another via the PokeCenter, but it's ONLY through Viridian City and Odale Town. I first thought that once you beat the first gym of both regions thats when the other doors open, but nope... they are stuck at locked. I'm guessing MAYBE they will all open once you beat the game.

Also if you do decide to go through the door, do NOT have any important pokemon in your PC or else they will completely disappear from it as if they never existed. I had a Charmander and Treeko in there and they both went bye-bye.

You can softlock yourself from clearing the rest of Hoenn if you start in Kanto, go to Hoenn, and battle May before encountering Birch getting raped by the Zigzagoon, as the guy that blocks your path to go west won't go away and Birch will still act like you haven't encountered may yet even though she is literally standing right next to him.

You still have the PokeNav when you go from Hoenn to Kanto, but the PokeNav still assumes you're in Hoenn because not only does the map say Hoenn but will display Kanto, but your contacts are all from Hoenn (so I'm guessing you can't save any contacts from Kanto).

They weren't kidding when they said this was a beta, idk why they even bother releasing this in the first place unless they were THAT desperate to show the world their fun little idea, as half-baked as it is. They can't even get regular features working right and already they are planning on adding Johto by Beta 2?

Do any of you guys have a fun strategy you use? I recently made a team that basically revolved around switching out, which included Eiscue of all things. It took my friend about 64 turns to take down, and I recently thought of a way to improve it.

My strategy is always just "find ways to use the guys that I like." Playthroughs, competitive, doesn't matter. I will find a way to force square pegs through round holes because those square pegs are my bros.
