is overrated, change my mind.
For sure, but it's the first.... "Mechanically sound" (?) Entry that's comparable to the modern game. For me it would probably be my fourth or fifth fave gen. I agree with quite a bit of your criticisms, although I do like the starters, and while the trumpets are a bit much in retrospect, at the time I was super impressed to hear what the GBA could do vs the GBC

I'm one of those kids who always played games on mute tho lol. Only the past few years I've really appreciated sound design.

I was fantasizing about the sprouts being antennas to channel psychic powers.
I agree, poison would be more fitting ngl
Ah yeah that's cool too, it's just you said poison touch and it reminded me lol. Maybe you could even have two forms or something - a "rotten" form and a "channeler" form - either seperate evos, or like Darmanitan, Morpeko etc

Update do my Volt Black Redux gameplay, got six lucky eggs and a good place to grind and got to lvl 65 before fighting the gym in the airport, didnt lose this time but got reduced to just 2 pokes alive.

Then got into the tunnel and reached the swamp city where I grinded to lvl 70.

Is the Cherem fighting you after every single gym battle in the normal game or just this hack? Seems a bit excessive.

is overrated, change my mind.
Well, I'm not going to even try to but my hot take is thus: Hoenn > Kanto and Johto.

My reasoning is mostly from an aesthetic standpoint. RSE ran on more advanced hardware so Hoenn displayed more varied environments than the previous two generations and I thought it was better designed than Johto albeit more linear. Most of your criticisms still stand though I am solidly Team Blaziken because I love birds (Swampert is a close second) and I find that Johto had just as many garbagemon and mediocre starters that I stopped paying attention to until HGSS.

With that said my feelings are that Gen 6 Hoenn > Gen 3 Hoenn because the physical/special split made those Ghost and Dark types more playable along with the added features.

That is not to say I hate Gens 1&2. RBY is--to be brutally honest--an unrewarding slog because of all the first installment weirdness so I would rather just play FRLG though I respect that it got the ball rolling. GSC is still as enjoyable as it was when I first played it with my recent replay of Crystal being a stroll down memory lane.

I would like to see a Let's Go in Johto. I know they weren't everyone's bag, and they were pretty easy, but I quite liked having a Kanto remake that wasn't another straight up port, we've seen Kanto in the normal style so many times.

Legends probably killed Let's Go for good though, given its closer to what most fans seemed to want. I wouldn't have minded if it was the "third full remake" series, though. Let's Go also looked very nice IMO.

Who would replace Pikachu and Eevee, though? Their might have been a decent one.

Going by old-school shilling or fandom intrigue back in the day? Togepi and Pikablu's - I mean, Marill's pre-evo Azurill.
Oh yeah, Marill is a decent one with Togepi! Good idea. It'd probably be one of Ash's pokemon of guess though so they can do the anime story tie in again.

The only other way I'd like to see Johto/Kanto again soon is if Gen 10 was "Pokemon World" or whatever, with all the previous gens as a celebration of the series. GF would never do that though, not even through each reigon as DLC - every reigon would have to be a full price title.

I'd prefer they combine the first two games into one and have it be one big adventure. After you defeat the elite four you get a ticket to go to johto and have another adventure. Like Gold and silver did but in reverse and with no content cut from the second world.

That might be cool 10y down the line, but we've had two main series games (three/four if you count the Japanese releases) for the game story, and two for the anime one (Yellow/Let's Go). That's why I didn't mind so much they changed the catching and stuff, at least it was different.

Plus it'd probably end up half arsed like BDSP.

5 is really solid and a lot more popular these days, but on release it was really controversial for the completely new regional dex (everything non-unovan was locked to the national dex), new features like infinite TMs, and the heavier handed plot. I think a lot of people also just think the unovan designs are retarded, but tbh I've never really understood the argument since a sentient ice cream cone really isn't that much worse than a sentient rock or a pokemon whose entire design is 'it's named snake but backwards.'

It's also the last 2D title, though, and imo is probably the best generation in the series if we're strictly speaking of objective quality.
Platinum and B2W2 were possibly the very peak of the series, and I say this as an unapologetic Gen2/HGSS stan and Gen 1 finisher in its heyday. There's been a good amount of slow progress since then; the GTS, raids, easier EV and IV tracking and training, the Fairy type. But I haven't felt any game has been quite so immensely full as those mid-era games. I didn't finish the Gen 8 or 9 DLCs, so I don't know exactly how much they tacked onto their games, but I get the feeling it doesn't make up for being very lean throughout.

Those I have the least interest in, I think just cos I went GBA --> 3DS. I haven't even done Platinum but I have done Pearl (I haven't done both ultra moon either, only the one.

I need to get that petchurant DLC working for me. I downloaded but it didn't work...

The other two though aren't bad yeah.

Back to Volt Black. The fight against the Dragon Gym was the easier of all game since my team covered it well with Kingler and Swanna.

Do you want to know what was hard? The Victory Road, every NPC had a well made team with 5 slots in and before I unlocked the nurse to heal, I had to go back to the city to heal my team, I also had to leave two of them to use HM (fucking hate it so much). After finally getting it, this is it. I am not sure if I should fight N and Zekrom before or after, but I am going blind and have no clue about it at all.

Linoone definitely was good early game but fell off but I want him to be there since he earned some victories. I actually quite like all of them in the team, Musharna is a fat lazy slow poke but psychic helps a lot. Kingler is a beats and Crabhammer saved me way to much. Zebstrike fast also cleaned a lot, swanna is a safe fast special attacker. Emboar is a funny one, he isn't fast and sometimes dies a lot but helps a lot against some specific pokemon.

Gonna try the league tomorrow (funnily half of the map is still unlocked

Well that's an interesting team.

Finished the main story.

Going in blind was interesting, I got really fucked over against a fucking host Golem that would outspeed my pink tapir even with quick claw and OHKO, that was the most difficult battle of the 4 ones. caitlin was the easiest and I thought that fighter dude would be easy. But the fucker had lots of macho itens that would protect him.

And I think 3 of them started the battle by using toxic spikes and in the switcheroo would fuck my team up. The fights were a constant change of ohkos, even tho I was 5 levels above them. N fight was tricky, I only had one pokemon that would cover me from dragon that was his zekrom so when I was offered the opportunity to switch my linoone I did, even more when both were lvl 70ish. Imagine my shock when I use a dragon pulse, thinking it would kill his dragon, it was a fucking zoroark lol

Eventually I beat him with 2 pokes remaining.

Then the old fuck ghetsis stole the show with another fucking dragon and this battle was way harder, he btfo me mid battle knocking 3 of mine in a row by outspeeding me and by me being a retarded and not using my Zebrastrike. In the end it was him alone against two pokemon. Guess what? A fucking plant and a starmie. And I had a fire move and was equipped with magnet and btfo ghetsis. Finishing the first part.

Then the post game start, I go to the sports city and fight some trainer there and rhe fucker is lvl 88, 5 above myself. When you reach this point, every battle is OHKO other, so I lost 3x already because I don't want to use itens before battle or going to the pokecenter. And a single win already covers the monetary loss of a defeat. I still have no clue about what is the postgame since half of the map wasn't unlocked.

Is there a phase two for the e4? In this case I can expect a lvl 100 battle in case of Volt Black Redux with those cracked teams

I like Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire more than Ruby and Sapphire.

That was Gen 4.
When D&P were not released yet, I was looking up info on new 'mons at that serebii site, seeing the move "Thunder Fang", and thinking "more Electric moves?", not knowing it was gonna be a Physical Electric move. Also the serebii site hasn't really changed since then.

I've noticed an extremely reliable correlation between what generation is someone's favorite and which generation was the first one they remember playing through all the way. Gold & SIlver came out in 2000 in the USA and HGSS in 2009, which makes a fairly large chunk of the current online Pokemon fanbase the right ages to have Gen 2 and its remakes be their first "real" games.
I've noticed this too. Gen 3 was my favorite for a long time, and it was also the first game I played all the way through. I had exposure to the other games from the movies and pokemon stadium, but Gen 3 was the first one I got really into, and the other two seemed less interesting when I played through them later. I've played silver, sapphire, diamond, moon and ultra sun all the way through, and red/fire red, black 2, X and violet maybe halfway through (currently playing through X for the first time). I guess some I just really like, and the others I lose interest in pretty quickly. A lot of people like gen 5 the most nowadays.

Though my favorite gen now is 7, so it's possible to change. It's the only one that really caught my interest since 3. I've been thinking about picking up the ruby and sapphire remakes. Although Gen 7 is very hand holdy, I love changes like reusing tms and ride pokemon. That's also a problem with going "backwards" once you are used to things being a certain way.

I also feel like I never really appreciated Sinnoh when I played it the first time and think it has a lot of potential as a region, but the Switch remakes don't look as appealing as the Gen 3 remakes so I'm on the fence if I should try them or not.

i think the most time i have spend on an offical pokermon game was gen 8 followed by gen 3, but time means shit! my fav one is gen 2,
Gen 7 holds a special place doe to this game spawning one of the best pokemon in VGC which is used to this day and hated. but hey its amazing so why not using it

hearth gold and soul silver where also kind of goated

I find this odd, because you're not wrong... but I started with 5, finished Black all the way through, then played through both Y and X fully (and can remember doing so with clarity) before Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby... only to greatly prefer Emerald to all of ORAS, have little-to-no affection for Kalos outside of its shockingly useful Nuzlocke setup, and rank every single Unova game behind the original 3 Hoenn ones.

Most of the people I know who like the series are similar. One friend played through Gold all the way through, his favorite is Ruby. Another started with Sun and his favorite is Pearl.
For casual players, your theory mostly holds true. Whatever generation they started with, whatever region they played through first, is probably their favorite. (Relevant: 1726609043982.png )
But does this still apply to hardcores?
