Even the sprite based games had stuff in it that you had to watch frequently if you ‘grinded’ and my god, fun at first but boy does it get tedious fucking fast.

Fire Red/Leaf Green had little animations play every time you used an item on your Pokémon out of battle or taught it a TM. Clearly they were trying to add some flair to their remake (and it was a tiny bit practical, how close the Pokémon got when you used an item was a rough indicator of friendship level) but I for one am glad those cutscenes didn't stick around.

They want to ignore Kalos because Gamefreak does not want to touch Mega Evolution ever again. And PLC means...?

Edit: Ah, Pokemon Legends: Celebi. I see them trying that kind of remake happening more with Unova first.

Time for an unpopular opinion - Mega Evolution was a terrible fucking gimmick.

Yeah, it gave Pokémon like Beedril and Mawile some life, but it fell hard into the trap of just giving already strong Pokemon more power because they’re popular. We didn’t need 2 fucking Charizard or Mewtwo Megas, and Mega Rayquaza by itself should be an argument against Megas ever coming back. If it stuck to giving underused Pokemon a Power Boost to catch up, I’d probably look back on it more fondly.

Shit on Gen 9 as much as we all do, Terastalizing is probably the most balanced Battle Gimmick Game Freak has made - hell, even Terapagos Special Tera Type is just a kinda mid gimmick.

Heck the fact they introduced Megas and the starters for XY did not get one is a crime.

I mean it’s literally the ‘we want every mon to have a mega, it not to just be a few turns and it not to just be one move’ thing people were wanting since Megas.

I do wish your bike got a special form though when using it.

I still say that any Mega for any not already 3 stage evolution (Mawile, Banette, Camerupt, etc) should have just been a cross generation evolution like the ones we got in Gen 4 (Rhyperior, Magmortar, etc). Give them less potent abilities and they work out fine and it would have still breathed new life into older forgotten mons.

It really would be nice if they brought back cross-generational evolutions to the extent that gen 4 did. I'd rather have two dozen cross-generation evolutions than two dozen regional forms. I'm still annoyed that my boy Zigzagoon only got an evolution for its Galarian form.

The fact we got seven new forms like this in Scarlet/Violet makes me hope Game Freak is opening back up to the idea.

If it came out that Game Freak beat whoever added Eviolite to the series to death, I wouldn't be too surprised.

That single Item has handicapped design space for extending old Pokemon lines - how many Pokemon have problems that could easily be addressed with an Evolution, but have stats at a point Eviolite existing would make them too powerful? There's almost certainly a few, and its why we're probably not getting many, if any, more cross-gen evo's...

Almost all, if not all, of the cross gen evolutions we've gotten since Eviolite are offensively based for a reason. They don't want another Dusknoir situation, and Kingambit would be a lot worse without its stupid ability. It's a shame too as I really like mons like Obstagoon.

Hell, Cursola is almost entirely outclassed by its prevo thanks to Eviolite and they were able to design around Eviolite.

GF never had any problems with making certain items unobtainable in later gens.
Yes you COULD make the argument that said items are either directly tied in to the primary gimmicks of the current gen (Mega stones, orbs, Z-crystals, curry ingredients) or don't even matter to begin with (berries strictly for culinary use, mail envelopes, etc) but I don't think the developers would mind leaving Eviolite in past gens if it really gets in the way of programming stats.

I agree that Mega Evolution would've been much better had it not been used as a popularity contest, and I still don't know what they were smoking when they decided not to give any Kalos Pokemon a Mega (except Diancie but who cares about Diancie?), but GF's failures to balance their own game doesn't make Megas an inherently bad idea. The idea of a temporary mid-battle evolution sounds much better than a free OHKO, Pokemon but big or Pokemon but with crystals and a type change.

I think that write up is innacurate now since the introduction of Koffings new hidden ability neutralizing gas which turns off abilities while its on the field.

Its basically like palafins form change except it triggers on entry and doesn't untransform once its done it. So it just looks different in your box vs. In battle. Its terrastalized form is just a visual light show. The gimmick of stellar tera types is its more powerful against Pokémon that are terrastalized, so its like getting a trump card against the gimmick of the whole game, changing types. Otherwise stellar tera are useless unless its used against a terrastalized Pokémon so the trump card only has one use.

Terrapagos will probably be useless in future games unless they rework its ability. Maybe in the next gen it will be the only Pokémon in the Dex that can still terraform into new types. So just like an arceus but without having to equip plates to change type.

Stellar Tera makes Tera Blast Stellar type and super effective against terrastilized Pokemon, but leaves the Pokémon's typing the same as it was before tera for weakness calculation. It also gives any move type you use a one time 1.2x attack boost, and makes your STAB bonus 2x instead of 1.5x once. So essentially it's like having a Gen 5 era gem on a STAB move, and a half STAB bonus on any other move type once each.

Essentially Stellar is a trump card against other tera users if you have Tera Blast, as well as a reward for having coverage options. Since you only get the 1.2x bonus once per type and not once per move, it's best maximized on coverage mons with lots of type options or something you want to use to nuke the opposing tera mon with Tera Blast.

Worth noting, using Tera Blast while Stellar type lowers both your Attack and Special Attack afterwards to help balance it's universal super effectiveness on tera, but makes it insanely abusable on Contrary mons like Serperior or Malamar.
