Your comment brought me back all the way to 2011. As someone who started with Pokemon White and joined the fandom shortly after, I can say that it was divided in a way not unlike what we're seeing now.Gen 5 was a good generation but got released at the wrong time.
You can't tell nowadays because the people who grew up with gen V are now making posts and videos praising it, but back then gen V was extremely unpopular, it's still the lowest-selling generation to this day thanks to the backlash it got on release.
You could not enjoy Black and White without someone bitching about the ice cream or the garbage bag. It got so bad that when gen VI rolled around the fandom collectively told the genwunners to shut up and never speak again. Any bitching about Garbodor, Klinklang or Vanilluxe got immediately shut down with Muk, Magneton and Voltorb.
And the funny thing is this still affects the games and the fandom. Game Freak became so pathologically afraid of trying anything new that the next generations, especially gen VI, were filled with Kanto pandering. If you criticize modern Pokemon designs, someone will remind you of Raticate, Krabby, Dewgong, Voltorb, Magneton and Muk, even if you're not a Kanto fan.
