I still think the "hard mode" for BW was something every game needs from the start, though.
Pokemon really needs that. Also a permadeath option, which they'll never do, but I remember reading that they considered it way back during development of gen 1. They could just say the Pokemon are "disabled" or something instead of dead.

"woke this", "woke that", you niggas have legit brain rot.
Yeah, not the trannies, just people tired of them have brainrot lmao, cry more woke faggot.

The only bootlegs I legitimately hated were the Walmart brand Hitmons.

Also, in the spirit of keeping the thread from becoming a sperg slapfight – I've begun playing through this weird FireRed ROM hack.

Pokemon The Last Fire Red (v4.0.3)_1697263884599.png

It's kind of like Radical Red in that it adds the entire National Dex up to Gen 7 (plus the Gen 8 starters) into Kanto, and makes the AI somewhat harder to beat. But it has some of its own... quirks.

I'm not sure why, but the author has apparently decided to change the story by cramming Team Magma & Aqua into Kanto. I don't know much else because I only explored up to a bit of Route 2 before taking a break.
(In case you're wondering, yes, the bad grammar is everywhere in this hack.)

There's also several new rivals like Ash here, and some guy named Ritchie that's pretty much bootleg Ash, since they both have a Pikachu. Oh, and Serena from XY, of all people, is a friendly NPC too.

No, I don't think the author gave a fuck about silly things like "balance".

Considering the absolute state of the franchise, it can be assumed that any time you're talking to a western gamefreak fan, there is usually trannies present, yes. Trying to appeal to them in the effort to make the franchise more popular in the West has been a horrid decision, now even the characters look awful and that was one of the last few good things the franchise had going for it.
But to be fair, there is only a few creatures out there pathetic enough to still defend Gamefreak in 2023, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the bulk of them are trannies(or their sympathizers). It cannot be emphasized enough how horrible their fanbase is, one of the worst in gaming, hands down.

@Archeops No. Team 1 being Vets a Team 2 being new checks out. Heard the same. Think they may have even admitted to that when saying SwSh and S/V were helmed by new blood. Least that’s how I temember hearing wbout it.

They obviously thought their new staff could hack it and were giving the vets chance to make a stable of new IP whilst also giving them a break.

Which is a smart move if the B Team is good. They clearly aren’t.

Competitive isn't limited to just official tournaments though. Many unofficial ones are local and don't have age divisions plus the official ones are gatekept so that it's not feasible for most kids to have a chance to enter them anyway if they are good enough. Even if you win no one cares about who is good at a video game and you wouldn't even get enough to cover the cost of travel. People take it way too seriously, invest way too much time, and act like their way is the only way to do things any deviations or shortcuts are wrong or cheating. Almost like the point is to brag about how much time and money you wasted.

Most of the people that burnt out with the series in BW wasn't just because the starters but the fact that Unova just had a fucton of bootleg Gen 1 pokemon. They weren't awful but it was more that it just felt like trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice and with people that grew up with the series, it was just the "nothing is new and shiny enough anymore" to draw those people back. The number of new pokemon was actually good. It's just that a lot felt uninspired like a new Parasect or Machamp. They're not all 1:1 but it just felt like it was retreading ground and that's pretty much all the complaints I really remember. Number: good. Rehashing: meh.
I agree, though they're still wrong because fuck you so many of the counterparts to gen 1 are literally just better in gen 5. Who would honestly choose Golem- a stunted lizard stuck in a boulder- over Gigalith- a literal moving mountain that shoots laser beams but is still physically-oriented for some reason?
Primeape- "it just gets bigger and angrier"- over Darmanitan- Daruma doll meant solely to set shit on fire? Raticate over Stoutland? Fearow over Braviary?

Subjective taste aside, I've always thought the "it's just the same thing again" argument was dumb because it's really grasping for straws. Even the examples I gave here are stretching it for similarities. Even the most blatant copies- for example, Hypno vs Musharna- differ greatly in execution, to the point where it's a disservice to the newer designs to even compare them. Musharna's body type is completely different, its premise is executed in the exact opposite way, it plays extremely differently (with a different evolution method to boot), it's much rarer...

Not to mention- the "dumb filler" repeats at the beginning are outright retarded to claim as solely a Unova thing. I still remember seeing genuine arguments that Watchog was shit because it was just Raticate again- a normal-typed rodent. Keep in mind that this was during gen 5, when the regional bird/rat/etc trope was already relatively well-established. The two aren't even remotely similar in execution.

I understand why that argument cropped up, but I think that the people pushing for it would've burnt out on the series anyways (since no matter what went differently I highly doubt the series would've broken from the formula to any greater extent five generations in) and that it's more an expression of exasperation than it is an actual argument. If they wanted to shit on the dex for anything, they could've started with asking why half the designs look like they're wearing clothes.

I agree with the rest of your post, but the starters are not doodoo, stalker child. Those are your delusions again. Samurott is my bro 4 lyfe and I will defend him to my last breath. Prison awaits
Samurott's alright but the other two are mediocre. The trio definitely isn't bad, but I think it's the beginning of the end for all-around good starter designs and I dislike how strongly anthropomorphized Emboar especially is when looking back on it. The point is that they falter in comparison to the last two generations' choices, where I still had at least one genuine favorite (Swampert/Blaziken, Torterra) instead of one "I don't dislike this design".

That's not what I meant, anyways. The starters are actually some of the best designs in the early dex imo, because the rest of it is bloated with dog shit like
  • the same two monkeys with slightly different clothes and color schemes 9 separate times
  • a realistic pigeon with gender differences where one gender looks less interesting than watching paint dry
  • stretched-out rat on acid that is constantly giving you death glares (this description is infinitely more interesting than the design)
  • literally just doronjo but as a cat with gross colors and one of those wrestling suits that Pignite's already wearing
There's still some great designs in there (aforementioned laser-shooting mountain, kiwi bat that attacks people with love) and some decent stuff (my mom's dog, edgy zebra that shreds eardrums), no doubt about it, but i'd argue that the really good designs only start hitting around Desert Resort (2, arguably 3 badges into the game) and the stuff you see before then is bad enough to prompt early quitting..

Oh fuck! I just realized that there are prereleases for the next Pokémon TCG set, Paradox Rift, next week!

I may actually attended some this time since the set looks pretty fun thanks to the introduction of Past and Future cards and the inclusion of more Paradox Pokémon. Seriously, some of the Illustration Rares in it look good.

Seconding this. If you pay attention to sanctioned tournament announcements and a big tournament is hosted in Florida you'll see trannies whinge and complain about TPCi "not caring about the safety of its LGBTQIABBQBYOBB+ fans and competitors" until they get bored of it.
Competitive isn't limited to just official tournaments though. Many unofficial ones are local and don't have age divisions plus the official ones are gatekept so that it's not feasible for most kids to have a chance to enter them anyway if they are good enough.
Last time I checked smaller sanctioned competitions like League Challenges and Cups don't suffer from gatekeeping (although I can't speak for higher tournaments like Regionals, International Championships, and World Championships) and generally try to be as inclusive as possible.

And as far as unsanctioned events are concerned I generally don't recommend doing them unless it's at a location that also hosts sanctioned events.
Even if you win no one cares about who is good at a video game and you wouldn't even get enough to cover the cost of travel.
You could say this about any sort of hobby, video game or not. Hell, with Worlds most qualifying competitors generally go to the locations early and turn it into a genuine vacation.
People take it way too seriously, invest way too much time, and act like their way is the only way to do things any deviations or shortcuts are wrong or cheating.
This is something I've mostly seen in the VGC scene (the TCG scene has it to a lesser extent) since they can be elitist as fuck, the one good thing I can say about it is that the salt that comes from those same players getting caught and reprimanded for cheating is incredibly tasty.
Almost like the point is to brag about how much time and money you wasted.
The first part of the second cut also works here. Oh, and the cost of the average Standard-format deck in Pokémon costs anywhere between $50-$100. Compare that to decks found in MTG's non-Vintage/Legacy formats.

I'm surprised that they're so focused on doing Japan-centered things (Legends Arceus and Teal Mask) and are obsessed with Kanto pandering, but never take us back there. I know the first four Generations are all based on different parts of Japan, but still.

The food based ones only work when it's something natural just animated or something normal disguised as food like pastry dog. Combee was a honeycomb is fine because it just combines a bee with its hive. The "haunted pantry items" are all around mid to me because they just feel a bit lame. Sushimon is just from an entirely different franchise. The cake sucks. The ice cream sucks. Whipped cream sucks. All of the "it's just a fruit or fruit tree" ones vary to decent to just okay but none are that awful. Jack-o-latern is endearing in a way. All mushroom but Breloom suck.
pastry dog is haram, parasect > Breloom, agree on the rest
gourgeist is good as its the focus on the creepy element, not on the pumpkin as food
The tea is bad and the soyboybait sushi dragon looks like something from a mobile game.

He looks like he was made for some N64 Zelda and it's not an insult but there's something about him that falls too much into the weird territory of design.
but he perfectly fits on ghetsis theme and the more mature design of gen 5 overall
@Archeops toad also was best dracovish Counter in early Gen 8 OU

Edit: Slurpuff is just a lobotomy patient looking horror.
A true slow-in-the mind

we did go back for alot of the gens, gen 1 was beginning of KANTOOOOOOO, gen 2 had us return to KANTOOOOOOOOO, gen 3 had the remakes of KANTOOOOOOOO, gen 4 was the remake of the return to KANTOOOOOOOOO, gen 5 was very much trying to be spiritually KANTOOOOOOOO 2 with some of their designs being homages, they literally copy and paste viridian forest in kalos bc of KANTOOOOOO fags not taking to gen 5, gen 7 had KANTOOOOOOOOO remakes 2- baby mode.
so it hasn't been done fully but it's been done before

What are you talking about? We just had those cringy Let's Go games that nobody seemed to like. That was supposed to be the remake of Pokemon Yellow, but I think that game is unironically still more fun to this day. Arceus released when it did because it was supposed to be a companion piece to BDSP remakes but people ended up mostly just favoring Arceus.
Teal mask went full Japan mode because even Gamefreak admits that Paldea is a boring, mobile game tier shit region with nothing unique or even remotely similar to Spain in it. Nobody is going to care about SV once the next gen hits, just like barely anyone talks about Galar and SwSh anymore.

Well, I meant actually returning to Kanto in non-Kanto games (outside of Gen II) but you're certainly not wrong. Didn't even know about the Viridian Forest copy/paste, never played X or Y.

most gen 1ers would probably reject a legends: mew or some shit bc of it possibly having a different structure.
for pure member berries, they want ultra hd gen 1 so they can live their memories of basically playing the anime.

Ya know, even back in gen V the "it's the same thing again" argument has always been kinda laughable. Like... yeah, the pokemon games are all kinda the same. Pretty sure that's a selling point by now.

They'll add or slightly improve on mechanics over time, but we're never going to get to a point where the latest mainline gen is fundamentally different than genwun.

I'm at the point where I just want the pretty new graphics and quality of life improvements plus the cool features we had in the old gens that they keep cutting without the inexcusable tech issues. I like Pokemon because I'm an autistic manchild, I promise I'm easy to please, Game Freak, so please just stop putting cigarettes out on my arm.
