personally I think Sinnoh and Hoenn do this much better (they have less issues with levelling, and Hoenn especially has this gorgeous spiral outwards from Littleroot that makes travelling always feel very fulfilling and keeps backtracking feasible and fun), but I otherwise wholly agreePokemon works best with a structured map with a little wiggle room like in Kanto and Johto.
I understand the appeal of the open world, and I'd love to see the concept done justice, but I don't think I'd ever prefer even a good open world to more linear structure with more wiggle room.
I just kept quiet about that when it was discussed pre-gen 9 because bringing it up whenever people discussed how linear Alola or Galar were was like asking for someone to yell at you about how shit gen 1 was or how linearity was always bad because Unova was a circle.
/vp/ sucks so much man. Glad this thread exists so there's at least one other place to discuss this franchise without the discussion being primarily made up of bugmen who buy thousands of dollars worth of TCG stuff well into their mid-30s.
