Watched the markiplier video up to the end of the first Gen - it wasn’t that interesting, really.
Best bit was his reaction to the bell sprout line.
Bellsprout: serious thought, decides to pass.
Weepinbell: even deeper thought, decides to smash.
Victreebell: takes one look at the teeth and yells Pass as quick as he can.

Beat Legends Arceus and I feel like giving my thoughts. This is definitely the best Pokémon game since B2W2 IMO, it’s at least a solid B-tier. I only have a few complaints:
1. boss fights should require you to do battle instead of the best strategy just being to continue chucking balms
2. we’re still doing fades to black during cutscenes and we still have moves where the Pokémon isn’t actually animated like Bulldoze
3. framerate dips when the game is docked/Pokémon in the distance being animated at an incredibly low framerate as opposed to the game having distance models
4. game could use a bit more actual content, it’s obvious that the rank requirements are only there to distract you from how short the main story actually is

I've wanted a shiny Liligant since black and white, so of course I find a shiny petilil in the one game Liligant looks different and scares me. I wish they would've just given it a short ballet skirt (like bellossom) or something. The white in between the green leotard and the rest of the legs just looks lazy, they really should've covered that.

Either way, if you're in a distortion, keep an eye on the outside of it for sparkles, that's the only reason I saw it.

I really want to explore an ancient BOTW-style version of Kanto, and I really hope that doesn't make me sound like a genwunner, Johto and Hoenn might do too, those are just the 3 regions that seem most permanently burned into my mind so that I know them by heart

Beat Arceus. Didn't finish the Pokedex because the game is frankly boring, finished the Giratina "plot" and got to rank 9. I can appreciate that this isn't just another "last gen but worse" standard issue Pokemon game, but if it weren't for the built-in enjoyment of building a team of Pokes I would have probably dropped this game after a few sessions. This is by and away the fastest I've ever gotten sick of an open-world or Pokemon game. Really glad I had a bunch of Gold Points to spend on it.

You guys either like Pokemon a lot more than I do or have really low standards.

Lmao, I love how top hats have just come to mean "Your comment made me mad".

I 'unno, I think the ratio they have right now is perfect as is. If the boss fights had more turn-based combat it might kill the pacing since most battles in PLA aren't that strategic and end in 2 or 3 turns anyways.

Hard Argee. Game Freak still acts like they're making games for the 3DS and the only reason they continue to do so is simply the fact that they can get away with it. Why change the game for the better when said game has sold more than Sw/Sh in the first week with glowing reviews all around?

EDIT: "It's because we love Pokemon more than we respect ourselves"-Girlfriend Reviews

We can all complain about the lack of optimization but at this point it's going to take the resurrected spirit of Iwata to fix all of Game Freaks' bullshit. You either have to live with it or play better optimized game.

Eh, 10 hours minimum of storied gameplay isn't what I'd call exactly short. Story I'd argue not even the main point this game, or any Pokemon game for that matter. The main appeal of pokemon has always been the Mons and 230ish of them running around out and about is quite good enough for an average player. The average player online seems to enjoy the anemic content without complaint so that's basically a win the Pokemon Company's eyes compared to the shitshow that was Sword & Shield.

I do agree more endgame content would be for the better. I'm 99 hours in and the best you can do after beating the main story is fill out the Pokedex, Shiny hunt, or master all those shitty balloon races. An online battle mode wouldn't be amiss to balance out the tedium.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if a future update or expansion added Online Battles - considering the “changes” they made to battles in Legends, probably helped having a few million people look over it for any kinks that needed to be ironed out.

It gets a bit more entertaining when he passes Gen 1, because Gen 1 is the only one he’s familiar with, so you also see his initial reaction to some Pokémon.

Hey, guys, I have been lurking for a long time and I will say my story I will spoiler it though because it's a long stream of consciousness but there will be sections. Thank you in advance for reading and the subsequent conversations

Like a lot of people in the thread, I have been a long-time fan since before day one. I heard of the game through family living in the region visiting Europe and my cousin said to buy that game it's great and it's like Shin Megami Tensei. I loved that series so was excited and fell in love instantly. I have purchased every single game except sun and moon ultra because fuck that game.

I am a massive TCG player and it was my first game but Yu Gi Oh was my passion, the complicated rules and archetypal design made for a much more engaging game. I revisited the TCG in 2014 and was one of the first players to create the Gardevoir EX deck and had very good success in the game. Unfortunately unlike YGO, Pokemon TCG creates its own power creep when unwanted because the EX format was incredibly diverse but then set design took a nosedive at the GX period. The set design here was bloated, commons and rares did nothing and only some rares and some gx mattered. This too brought along Rainbow and secret rares making a massive setlist making collecting very difficult and pointless.

YGO regulates itself through set design and banlists and players getting interested in different archetypes but the 2/3 prize pokemon was a blight on the game. Decks become spam items and play a supporter like Marnie or Sycamore and there is no interaction. To this day there is no interaction, the game is basically holo card solitaire. The TCG has such a structure that local communities just disappear overnight and the Tag Team format fucking nuked local playgroups. I have been through the entirety of YGO and MTG and have never seen a mechanic decimate groups like Tag Team did. You were playing large cities or GTFO and large city groups are pretty toxic. They are very money orientated and don't really care about the game. Deck variance is non-existent and it's like playing solitaire.

The Pokemon TCG as a game is in a really hard place because so many actual players left during tag format and they sold collections and migrated games. The game is pretty much for collectors now and with PTCGO being so slow to release in-person events a lot of people left for yu gi oh too because the in-person play has been back for a while now since September in Europe. The game set design-wise is at the worst it's been baiting collectors and not actual players. Every 2 or so set becomes chase the Charizard or other iconic boring pokemon and it's rinse repeat. Set designs are at almost if not 300+ now and when compared to other games that are like 100 or 150.

Deck design too is at it's worst with nothing intuitive and again it's like solitaire. How can you be a TCG if there is no response, you aren't a game at that point.

I could type multiple theses' on the games and what has been and what will be but ultimately Game Freak is so fucking lazy with pokemon at this point it is detrimental to the success of the game. SW/SH was an abomination in game design and had so many issues, it would be repeating. They are designing games like they were for the DS. They design it if you are a first-time player, Sun. Moon had a 6 hour fucking tutorial for a 20-year-old franchise.

I WANT to love Arceus but I simply can't, technologically there are so many issues that stop me from loving the game. There is hope because I hope this is the design going forward. The game is too bogged down with story though, it uses long drawn-out dialogue about x or y that is unimportant to pad. I hate this as I notice games do it a lot especially Japanese games. The ranks were essentially a way of gating and forcing busy work and I stopped playing at the Liligant mission. The Kleavor mission was boring, you throw balm and win but I am optimistic.

The problem with the pokemon community and not this board is that it's full of toxic positivity and built on denial. Creators are petrified of saying the game is bad because it hits their dowry. A community like that lives in denial and will eventually implode because creators will come to a realization bit by bit that it's happening. The pokemon community on Youtube is borderline trash at this point too with creators saying nebulous game theory, vgc, tcg content or just being an outright deviant and being shamed/borderline.

@Chaotic Pizzaparty
I’m legit curious now, what do you mean by 6 hour tutorial in Sun and Moon? Is that how long you think the first island is? It’s not, it takes at most 2 hours. If you mean the first 4 trials then you might as well say the first 3 gyms in Sword and Shield are a tutorial too.

If there’s a designated Alpha spawn, it can be very easy to get a shiny Alpha so long as you have patience.

Also, there’s this odd glitch when warping to the second camp in the ice level where sometimes the game will just hard crash. I don’t know if it’s tied to time of day or what, but it’s happened enough times for it to clear by some kind of bug.

i'm now at the alabaster icelands, and i'm at star rank 8, and i only just realized that rock smash has utility in the overworld because it BREAKS (specific) ROCKS. so i'm retarded, obviously.

i caught a shiny tangrowth in one of the dimensional rifts, so that happened. also while pissing about in the rifts i managed to run into two more alpha sylveon. i have not seen any other alpha eeveelution, except sylveon. it's fucking weird.

so i'm leaning toward evolving scyther into kleavor, if only because scizor is a regular appearance in the alabaster icelands rifts. i don't /love/ bug/rock typing, but it'll do, i guess.

oh, also, i found all of the fucking wisps. it was not a fun time, especially since i've been collecting them as i've run into them, so when i came up short i had to check a guide and it fucking SUUUUUUUUCKED. i've never used spiritomb before, but i might replace alakazam with it, since i realized far too late that a nornal alakazam CANNOT EVER LEARN PSYCHIC. or at least mine can't? which makes its strongest special psychic move confusion, and that's just bulllllllshit.

edit: my alakazam does indeed know psychic I am dumb

You can’t teach Alakazam Psychic by taking it to the dojo?

NOPE. i know the game mentions that alpha pokemon may have rare moves, but fuck you, psychic shouldn't be considered a rare move ON AN ALAKAZAM.

Alakazam learns Psychic at level 43. unless it is below that level, it should have it already if you go to swap out its moves in the menu. And when they say "rare moves", it just means they know moves from the tutor at the dojo without having to pay for it out of your pocket(and they're already mastered so no need to use a Seed of Mastery up)

EDIT: I should also point out that, due to how the damage formulas work in the game, that the actual attacking stats barely matter at all. The grit levels added to the stat, the base power and type effectiveness of the move being used, and the defensive stats of the target determine most of the damage, so even if you aren't level 43 yet Zen Headbutt's damage in this game would be barely different from Psychic's despite the difference in Alakazam's Attack and Special Attack. Also means that Alakazam can use the elemental punches for type coverage just fine in this game, too(Also allows stuff like Gyarados being able to use Hurricane and Overqwil Dark Pulse with little worry about their low Special Attack).

Also means that natures that boost either offensive stat, like Adamant and Modest, are almost completely mechanically worthless in Legends as well. Ones that boost Defense, Special Defense or Speed and lower Attack or Special Attack are better for pretty much every species in this game, since their impact in battles would be far more significant.

...oh wow I'm all sorts of retarded. I never bothered to check its already-learned moves.

also I didn't realize how useless natures and shit were this time around.

so like 10 minutes ago I encountered a shiny kricketot that ended up fleeing into the grass. minutes later I run into a shiny wurmple. it's like the game knows I suck and it threw a pity shiny at me.

Don’t understand what’s wrong with my luck, I’ve beaten the game and not encountered a single shiny besides the guaranteed Ponyta.
a combination of luck and not having a life.

I was in the crimson mirelands and I heard the shiny noise and I couldn't for the life of me find it. and then I saw it - a green tangela. motherfucker kinda blended in. now I have a shiny tangela and shiny tangrowth.
