The pokemon anime was never good.
I mean Digimon objectively was better. It had characters that developed over the course of it's particular season, there were clear arcs and most importantly characters accomplished things over the course of the plot. It was still silly because it was made for kids but it wasn't as cringe inducing as pokemon.
In pokemon there is no character development. Ash never develops. You can watch an episode of season 1 and then go to season 5 and he remains the same. His goals never develop either. His goal to "become a pokemon master" is never properly explained. He never accomplishes anything. Most of the time he wins a Gym Badge either due to a technicality or because "the power of friendship". The show also doesn't have a clear ending either because of the lack of an arc. It can just perpetually continue endlessly with nothing accomplished with just changing the setting. Team Rocket's goal to capture pikachu became a reoccurring gag throughout the show but it is utterly pointless.
Saying "it's made for kids what's the big deal" is an excuse for mediocrity. There are lots of good television shows made for children that are still enjoyable when you watch them as an adult.
The problem entirely has to do with the writing staff on the show and their lack of interest in developing it. The Anime always has been an advertisement for the franchise. There are so many ways to create a pokemon anime that would actually be legitimately interesting to watch. You shouldn't just settle with crap because it belongs to your favorite game franchise.
