Y'all ever spend months searching for a title that you know shouldn't be this hard to find (it has a big name in the cast) only to realize the search bar's been autofilling with a typo you made in your first search?

You better badblocks the fuck out of it first. Seagate is a brand I will never buy even if it were 20TB for $20.00
At today's prices I literally will not buy new anymore. Water Panther or MDD refurbs only, please.

This is not nearly as stupid as it sounds. Hard disks (actual "spinning rust" drives) live on the classic bathtub curve. They fail (in order of most-common to least-common): 1) the first time you power them up, 2) within 3 months of entering service, 3) immediately following the expiration of their warranty, 4) the heat death of the universe. A disk that outlives its warranty period is probably never going to fail unless you do something destructive to it. What this means is that any "refurbished/relabeled" disk has survived beyond its most likely failure points and is well into that final period of "less likely to fail than a tiger-blocking rock." And do you see any tigers around here?

That makes it sound like the only times a hard drive fail is if it's poorly made or has a manufacturing defect.

Most of my hard drives are Seagate. What's wrong with the brand?
Their drives fail about twice as frequently as their competitors (WD and HGST (now WD)). Only Toshiba does slightly worse (which bums me out since I've got twelve of that brand sitting in a NAS; they're almost six years old now and doing well though so fingers crossed).

Based on a study of 443,156 HDDs and 1.66 million drive years (2013 through Q2 2025), see this for details.

Backblaze reports from over a decade coupled with 4 x ST3 [ 4/4 ] + 1 portable failure. Others fail, well more recently it's spiked against Toshiba I think, but overall they lead the pack by orders of magnitude in failures.
Only other drive I've had be complete shit was the MX500. That was a write amplification bug though, but I rarely see it mentioned.

I always shoot HGST, but will settle for Toshiba MG line and WD to a certain extent. Doesn't help WD is owner of most now.
I have ~50 HGST drives and had one fail, and it was a retail ultrastar 8TB. I also wouldn't touch reds unless you get the pro since I've had a few of those fail. Those too were retail but were 4TB and 6TB
SSD is same line up with Samsung thrown in. Their shitty fridge makes me want to stop using them all together though. How can not a single company know how to fucking make ice anymore. It's bonkers.

Order cancelled. Need recommendations. Looking for at least 4TB and preferably under $200.

I just got a 4TB WD Portable new on ebay for $60.00 the other week. Under $200.00 you can get a lot of shit.
I was buying drives at 6.50/TB before and now can still find around 8ish/TB. Had to drop down to lower capacity though. Also SAS which plays a big role in it too, but an HBA is still pretty cheap.
Let me go check to see what's out there real quick. If on Windows run HDSentinel to check SMART on your others. That Seagate portable still works technically, but it's at 2% life or something silly.

How are those. I assumed it was some GoHardDrive fuckery again, so I blacklisted in uBO to not see them.

Pretty much. You might get a click from a few. If right away I RMA otherwise I smack the fucker and it shuts up. Freezer trick works for my buddy if you don't want to hit your shit.
I have drives over 70k hours, hundreds of TB written, and still chugging along not giving a fuck.

Search: [ _dmd == vertical view | LH_BIN == Buy it now | _sop15 == price low to high | _ipg=240 == 240 listings | _pgn=1 == Page number 1 ]

182085 is hard drive area. You can put anything in _nkw which is search terms, Change 4tb to 6tb and you'll see how it starts with new basically.

Depends if you want new or not. If yes I'd probably get the 6tb if needed right now since $50.00 more than 4tb, but is over $200.00 by $20.00

Otherwise I'd wait and just see how they play off one another. At least till start of next week, as going into weekend, and / or hope for new listings to pop up while checking
6TB starts off with new basically. 4TB starts used then new at $170.00, and checked 2TB to compare against 4TB. Didn't do 1 to 2 though, and 8tb I think still requires a brick.
Don't mind ghetto then WD Gold SATA 4TB was $70.00 I think. They also make SAS adapters now too which were $35.00 last I checked but then another $7.00 for power adapter.
SAS can handle SATA, but not other way around

Edit: Should add this was WD only, but Toshiba makes portables too. There's also SSD portable if don't mind 1TB | 2TB to gauge where it's at in relation to this shitshow

I've got 24 MDDs total in two 12-bay NASes. One set (12 drives) is about 3 years old now. The other was purchased and commissioned along with the NAS itself in April of this year.

So far, no failures, hiccups or glitches. I've been happy with them, especially for the price.

I just need something external to hold my horror movies, the more space the better. Just need to be able to plug it into my USB hub.

I would ask the resident IT guy (my dad), but he is very anti-piracy.

Sharing the order number and the seller might be a bit much, someone could probably contact that caller and if they are lucky convince them to reveal your name and address
