I've taken to ripping HDDs out of junk PCs you find at Goodwill or whatever. I've got an HDD from 2011 still chugging

Sheet I got a 1tb drive I shucked from an external that's gotta be like 20 years old now

I still use 20+ year old HDDs. Mostly for backup, though. They're only on for a few hours every month. The only HDD that took a massive shit was a brand new 3TB Toshiba P300. Somehow I managed to wipe it with KillDisk before returning it the next day.
The rule with HDDs has always been that if it doesn't shit the bed within three months of installing it'll last for decades. The old tech channels I watch on Youtube routinely have hard drives from the mid-80s that still work.

I've seen this as well. I wiped some late 2000s drive and used it for a while and while it was shit in today's standard, but it kept trucking along and did it's job.

I got a bunch that I need to wipe and reformat, but other priorities are in the way at the moment.

You know, one time me and my friend went over to this rich guys house. He had this huge $10,000 multi-media setup including 100tb of NAS. I leaned over to my friend and said, "How do you feel knowing this guy has more media storage after spending 15-minutes ordering some parts from Newegg, than we have after spending years salvaging old hard drives."

My friend replied, "Yes, but I have something he will never have... enough anime."

In 2000 or so I still had a Micropolis HDD that had to have been at least 20 years old at the time. It was so old it still had the thing where there was a handwritten list of bad sectors on it so you could manually block them. It was a full height drive, weighed like it was made of lead, and made a sound like a jet engine when first accessed.

The goodwills up here put the good shit on their fucking website. Can't ever find a monitor with HDMI nor a music player. Just a few years ago I went to the Superstore and saw like 35 Mac minis, docking stations, a fucking cellphone range extender, and all kinds of shit.
I guess I shouldn't complain too much, I did find my POLK soundbar and subwoofer not too long ago.

You’re right. I got these batch of old PCs from family and the side of the road. Goodwill has gone very downhill

IMHO they don't deserve 501(c) status. They receive donations (tax deductible for the donor) and resell whatever they receive that's salable (writing off the rest themselves as "charity" when they donate it on to a scrap yard or throw it away at a landfill) not at a "reasonable thrift store price" that might befit their stated goal of "helping local communities" (by, say, selling perfectly good "gently used" products at reasonable prices), priced adequately to sustain the organization while also priced low enough to be affordable to the less fortunate members of those communities, but instead priced at "the maximum possible price someone will pay according to all available national market data."

I get it that they have to be "profitable" (well, technically "break-even" since they operate as a "non-profit") to keep the lights on, but they drastically overprice shit like crazy, end-run around the local communities (by listing their products online for sale or at least to drive traffic to local stores from further away), and do remarkably little actual "charity" work. Pretty much like every classic "charity" scam, tbh. About the only allegedly charitable thing they do on a regular basis is hire retards, but then again, they pay them below minimum wage wherever possible (and minimum wage anywhere they can't get away with underpaying them) and mistreat and overwork them as much as possible.

I'd love to see a thorough revamp of the whole 501(c) thing and a thorough review of all existing entities, but that's about as likely as the Clintons confessing their sins in public and surrendering to police so I know we'll never actually see it.

What do we think of "recertified" used eBay hard drives? How long do you think I can reasonably expect them to last?

I'm thinking of making a new data pool specifically for pirated media and cracked software. For something so relatively silly and trite, I'm fine with mystery meat that only lasts a year or two but if disks would cascade fail within months of being bought I'd rather not waste my time/money.
They're fine if you space them out so you don't buy all the same batch at the same time. Losing a NAS because you bought 4 at once from one seller is painful (one died, and then the other 3 died in sequence while trying to rebuild the array).

Watching some old KamSandwich videos and this pops up in the subtitles:

This video is from well before Kam found his niche in talking about bad boardgames, but he has never once spoken about piracy or torrenting. This is a very obscure video of his. He's from Indiana and does not speak with any sort of thick accent. This does not even remotely line up with the words he was actually saying. Someone went into an old, barely viewed video of his and threw in some random shit about torrents. They don't even include a URL where you can find this "pro free torrent".

Just thought y'all would appreciate my complete and utter confusion at this surprise torrent attack.

I'm not sure what you are tryingto say. Some board game reviewer on Youtube used a clip from a torrented movie in one of his old videos? Is your issue that he never mentioned piracy in his other videos? I don't get it.

These subtitles just came out of left field. Some parts were normal, some parts were in a completely different language, and then piracy just came out of nowhere. If I hadn't turned on subtitles, piracy wouldn't have even crossed my mind. These were not the auto-generated subtitles. Someone just tossed that in there and I may very well be the only person who's seen it. Completely irrelevant to the entire video and the channel it's on.

So like really poorly done AI generated subtitles that pulled from real subtitles found online?

I think I overestimated this thread's familiarity with YouTube subtitles. I only took an interest in them when I found out you can mess around with fonts, colors, etc.
YouTube auto-generates subtitles for videos using speech-to-text, but they can be edited/replaced with something else.
Some people like to fuck around with default subtitles. Someone replaced the auto-generated subs in JayExci's Doctor Who video, which is 5 hours long, with a Korean translation. In order to get English subtitles, you need to have YouTube auto-translate the Korean subs to English.
