At least two packages sent to the Pentagon on Tuesday tested positive for the deadly poison ricin — but were intercepted at the Defense Department headquarters’ separate mail facility, an official said.

“As part of the screening process, (authorities) recognized some suspicious packages,” Defense Department spokesman Chris Sherwood said.

The packages were addressed to someone at the Pentagon, he told Agence France-Presse.

The mail facility is in a separate building and the packages never entered the Pentagon itself, CNN reported.

The FBI and the Pentagon Force Protection agency responded and additional testing is expected to be done by the bureau, two defense officials told the news outlet.

No one was reported to be suffering any ill effects from exposure to the substance, the Washington Examiner reported.

Ricin is a highly toxic compound that is extracted from castor beans and has been used in terror attacks.

A hazardous materials response team was dispatched to Senator Ted Cruz’s campaign office in Houston, Texas Tuesday after staffers opened an envelope containing a white powder that may be toxic, the Weekly Standard reported.

While it remains unclear whether the material was in fact toxic, two people present at the office building were hospitalized after coming into contact with the substance, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Two people were taken to the hospital after apparently being exposed to a white powdery substance in an office building at 3200 SW Fwy. The 9th floor of the Phoenix Tower has been evacuated as HFD HazMat is responding to the scene working to determine the nature of the substance.

Multiple police cars and fire trucks can be seen outside the campaign office in a photo of the office parking lot sent to the Weekly Standard.

Probably the most well known case is from 1978. Even ISIS has instructions on how to make ricin and ricin laced bombs in their manuals.

Back on topic though, ISIS supporters have been arrested in at least the US, Britain, Germany, and France in connection planning/supporting/etc ricin attacks this year alone. I wonder if there has been an increase in handlers proposing this and propaganda pushing it? I'd be surprised if it is something new since NBC attacks are a holy grail of terrorism as they cause such widespread fear and panic, but I haven't seen ricin mentioned specifically in media reports about arrests. ISIS precursors were launching improvised chemical attacks using chlorine over a decade ago, so it's well within their wheelhouse to encourage lone wolf ricin attacks.

The FBI has taken a suspect into custody in connection to what was believed to be ricin letter threats that were mailed to the Pentagon and other locations Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors authorized a probably cause arrest for William Clyde Allen of Logan, Utah, who has been taken into custody, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah told ABC News.

Officials "anticipate filing a complaint Friday in federal court in Salt Lake City," officials said.

Allen served in the Navy from 1998 to 2002 as a damage control fireman apprentice, records showed.

For the record Fireman Apprentice is an E-2 which is the second lowest rank which is basically a given for passing boot camp, and 4 years is the minimum enlistment period. Also, damage control is generally in charge of checking door seals and fire extinguisher expiration dates. Not difficult work.
