So I finally bought CK3, along with several DLCs (Friends & Foes, Tours & Tournaments, Royal Court, and Roads to Power). What is the best way to start playing? I've heard Ireland is a good country to start out with.
Ireland is always a nice start. However, when I first started playing the CK series (I started with CK2) I immediately jumped in as William the Conqueror. Losing is fun!

Please, Johann, why can't you just drop EU5 and make East v West? I WANT MY COLD WAR POWER FANTASY NOW, NOW, NOW!

Let Johan finish up EU5, move him to the HOI4 team to serve as tardwrangler for their Commonwealth+US DLC and France rework DLC so they can finally sunset HOI4, and THEN he can be the lead for the cold war team.

HOI4 being sunset implies that the team will move to another project. Just abandon that heap of shit and fire everybody who touched it. Make them join the bread lines they claim to yearn for.

All bets on Stellaris 2 with that Tatooine/Arrakis rippoff desert planet.
Assuming this is Podcat's game it's not Stellaris 2 given he indicated that a while back:

Guessing it'll be a fantasy-themed GSG, if only because Paradox knows how popular Anbennar is, has AoW4 to piggy back off of for inspiration, and (high) fantasy being the one genre they haven't used for a setting yet. Outside bet on post-apocalypse, but at that point you can just do something like Endless Legend. The true patrician gambler is all-in on Imperator 2 :smug:

Don't start in Ireland in 867. You'll get raped by vikings. Technically there's no way to lose since you can always play as unlanded character after but if you want to build something in your first playthrough either pick european feudal or some African/middle east Muslims. European feudals are kind of "classic" CK gameplay. Fairly straightforward. Muslims are similar, but even easier because if you keep your dynasty united, inheritance is much easier to deal with. Euro pagans, especially vikings, are fun to play as well since they pay for their regiments with prestige rather than money you can field decent army from the very start. But you need to feudalise later in game or you'll be left behind tech wise. Every other region has some shitty gimmick to deal with. Except for India which is flavourless waste of PC memory. I don't know much about those gimmicks since i dont play CK3 much anymore, but when I gave the China dlc a try I didn't like any of them.
Keep in mind CK3 can get pretty chaotic early game and you can quickly get fucked, not always because of your mistake. Start as vassal of some king or emperor or some independent duke or count far away from big hitters so you have less mechanics to worry about at the start.

How's the ERE in CK3? Starting as a douk in CK2 was always fairly doable, especially the earlier you go.

I never was a fan of CK2 ERE so I will say it's kind of better? It has imperial administration from the start of the game. So characters compete for title appointments (including emperor title) based on score. Score is calculated based on skill, dynasty rating, influence (prestige-like resource), and secondary trait called administration or something like that. Kind of seemed fun at the start when I didn't know what im doing but once you learn how to deal with it it's very easy and overpowered. It's much more stable and powerful then feudal.
Other things, each family also gets an off map title called estate (PDX seems to love adding those in their DLCs) which functions similar to merchant republic mansion from CK2. There are also unique activities, chariot racing and triumphs. Like all CK3 activities they are boring wall of text you don't bother to read and just click through. There are also inter family politics but I never bothered with it since it's so easy to outrank them.

It has snowballed.

I'm at 99.4% threat level and my capital in Baghdad has the highest tech level in the world, everything is greyed out for the spymaster's study technology task.

R.I.P. to my first ever "... The Great" character in CK2
Thegreat.png

He was diagnosed with cancer right after I started playing as him at age 15, I really didn't expect him to live as long as he did. The theology focus and a 25+ INT physician go a long way. He probably would have lasted even longer had I went back to the hermetics and used the health boosts from the Magnum Opus i still have in my treasury. He became The Great at some point during three successful invasions of Arabia, Egypt and Nubia in quick succession. The perks of living in juiced up Baghdad as well as most of my realm existing along the Silk Road means I'm filthy rich and still turn a profit whilst having 40k troops + mercenaries raised in a war.

Working on acquiring the Shia caliphate, one would imagine that personally holding Mecca, Medina and being Sayyid would be enough to assume the role but nope I have to go and take it from the guy.

Edit: Forgot about this one, my 2 lesbian wives Thelma and Louising themselves.

I'll soon be able to adopt Chinese Imperialism. I might check it out.

...is that the Umayyad caliphate swallowing half of Europe?
Brother, The Umayyad Caliphate IS Europe.

I just took Maghreb from them.

My favourite part is Norway belonging to the Jomsvikings.

They warned me that Christianity doesn't stand a chance in 769. All that's left are the British Catholics as well as the never ending civil war between iconocalsts and orthodox in Greece.

Edit: Two things that I sorely miss from CK3:

(Specifically 1:05)

Pagan Fury holds nothing to these two. Almost as good as In Taberna.
