That would be rather clever, so I doubt it's the case. I mean, these are the guys who openly admitted to conspiracy to assassinate a foreign leader on twitter. I don't think they'd have the patience to maintain such a ruse anyway.

...Point.

Since Eli was in college, he's (most likely) an adult and his disappearance would be a Silver alert (Missing Adult with a mental disability -usually an elderly person with Alzheimer's that wanders off, but applicable to people with ASD). This would make local news, but not be plastered all over the place for days on end.

If his family is looking for him, we might not hear about it -it's understandable they'd be embarrassed, so they're not going to contact the press, and they're not going to use the internet to communicate with Jace, Eli's Svengali stoner friend.
