It's really unbecoming to be this smug about a plagiarism machine, and so hateful towards a man who dedicated his life to helping others. Ask ChatGPT what a human should feel in that situation, and it'll reply with shame, perhaps.
Show us where the LLM touched you, dude. "Plagiarism" is a loaded term. LLMs are capable of producing more than the protected expressions they were trained on, and no amount of sticking your head in the sand will change that. Pretending they're all crap isn't going to stop the rapid advance of coding harnesses that are producing real results, in contrast to your "man who dedicated his life to helping others" who actively impeded the development of GCC to the point developers got sick of his bullshit and forked it right out from under him... and their fork is now the basis of modern GCC. Stallman is a demagogue who, like every communist before him, simply wanted to be an apparatchik in charge, and any time he was called upon to do something substantive he failed miserably. After 40 years of his bullshit I'm not going to sit here and pretend that he's been some kind of saint. He hijacked a movement that started before him, used it to push his own socialist politics, and systematically impeded everyone trying to do real work. Fuck him and all the partisans who still cling to his coattails.

While the decompiling that AI does is good in the short term, I feel like it may be really bad in the long term because:
1. People start using the AI decompiled programs instead of FOSS alternatives.
2. People stop developing the FOSS software because no one uses it anymore.
3. The developers of the programs that have been getting decompiled figure out a way to prevent new versions of their software from being decompiled.
4. FOSS dies. You own nothing. You control nothing. Enjoy web browser prison, stalker child.
Even if it is technically open source, I still feel uncomfortable on relying on software designed to be proprietary for anything important.

Yeah and the world is going to get destroyed by global warming/global cooling/climate change any day now. "AI decompilation" is a meme. It's superficial, and falls apart outside carefully edited videos.

I've worked outside for 10+ years and can definitely tell you it's getting hotter. Don't take my word for it, just look at the record high temperatures in the US this past year alone. It barely snowed in many places like Colorado and Utah this year.
Of course our world won't be fucked by climate change "any day now", but you would be irrational in denying that it's happening. The US gulf coast is shrinking, hurricanes getting stronger... it's not a question on "what will happen", it's "what is happening".
I feel like AI is in a similar place right now. We are learning about these misalignments and attempted intrusions of gov and private networks months after the fact. Turn on cable TV and every commercial is an AI casino. My own mother is unknowingly sending me videos of AI generated people shooting each other in a neighborhood that looks exactly like the one a few streets away. Grandparents are getting scammed by Indians calling them with AI voice changers saying that they are their grandkids and need money because they're in the hospital. What is being done about all of this? Nothing. More money is pumped into these AI companies to bring up their fake """value""" and all of us have to deal with the brunt of people using AI for shitty things.
AI won't destroy the world but it sure is already making it a lot more shittier.

Okay sure, but there's a total failure to prove that any warming or cooling is due to human behavior over the planet going through cycles. We've seen warming and cooling cycles in geological records, and trying to use the few hundred years of human industrial activity to make a point is a blip in the scale of things. Can we affect the environment? Duh, but giving up our rights and paying more in taxes and making retarded sacrifices is stupid when China and India get away with infinitely worse.

Is AI catastrophic? Absolutely not, especially when half of the arguments against it are answered with "just build nuclear". Much like the industrial revolution and various inventions of labor saving devices, jobs will be lost and new ones created. Doomfagging over AI is short-sighted when the development of new technology opens doors we didn't know existed.

3. The developers of the programs that have been getting decompiled figure out a way to prevent new versions of their software from being decompiled.
This is the critical step, doesn't seem plausible for now. And wouldn't someone just resume FOSS development if this actually happened? It sounds like a lot of worst case hypotheticals strung together, I'll echo the "climate change" comparison on these grounds alone. Unless we're dumb enough to allow "FOSS" apps to update and run entirely from inside SGX enclaves or something like that, I don't see any way to prevent reverse engineering.

Current LLMs can generate pretty good software just from someone drunkenly one-fingering a vague description littered with spelling mistakes, no decompiling needed. LLM capabilities have gotten better much faster than I'd have thought even in 2025. And we'll probably be able to run it all at home on a freely available model with whatever the next generation of DGX Spark turns out to be.
Are we even going to need "software" at all? In 10 years, with all these agents, are we seriously still going to click around in Premiere Pro to edit a video? Or tailing error logs manually, in a terminal to debug an error? Or will all this manual work be done by agents by guiding them through what you want? Are we even going to need to edit video when entire movies can be generated?
And for how long is Adobe even going to be able to afford building new versions of its software when you can just use a freely available clone that you can customize in any way you want?

To the drive-bys, note that alternatives to Adobe software are not new and rare things, and most predate the current slop age. Don't let the momentum of laziness stop you from seeking out alternatives. This image is a bit out of date but it should get you started.
I'm actually very glad that this guy Clauded an Illustrator because out of the alternatives listed, only Affinity Designer came close to Illustrator in terms of features and UX polish before it got bought out by Canva and became freemium spyware subscriptionslop (this happened in 2024, which is how outdated this chart is). Inkscape is GIMP-tier suckware and the remaining alternatives might as well be MS Paint running in a browser. Photoshop for photo editing also lacks a high-quality competitor outside of Affinity Photo, which, you guessed it, went the way of Designer. Yes, I'm still mad about what happened to my "buy once, own forever" Affinity licenses. Adobe alternatives aren't new or rare, but none of them succeed because paying or pirating Adobe is much more worth the effort than being forced to use Temu Adobe.

Apple Computer had a build of HyperCard integrated with QuickTime. Unfortunately, they never released it. Anyway and again, the software's still going to exist. The only thing that may change is it'll become even less understood. It's funny, I thought the old trajectory was going to lead to mass death eventually, but with all of this nonsense, I can see it happening in the next decade easily.

Even if this would be the case, you'd only get a few years before FOSS alternatives started popping back up. We're not just going to forget that OpenSource was a thing, unless the process you describe takes a 100 years or something.

And as the other quote mentioned, AI is getting good enough, that the burden of creating new, quality software will approach 0. They can try allowing only browser access, or some other method to have the code never touch your machine, but if you have enough tokens, you can just have a local agent literally just use the program until it replicates all functionality. Or maybe they'll create something so sci-fi, that 1000 ultra-intelligent Astra 67.61 instances are required to work together to replicate it. Sure you can't replicate it yourself, but the beauty of a market is, someone will want to eat into that profit margin. And beauty of software is that, once it's created, it can be shared infinitely.

If this sounds far fetched to you, you should reexamine how you view the world, it doesn't accurately predict real world outcomes; therefore is useless. ffmpeg exists. Blender exists. GIMP exists. These are very complicated projects and they existed in a world where every single semicolon had to be placed there by a sweaty nerd, by hand.

Software will have two places it can retreat to.
  1. Computationally intensive stuff that you pay to have run on other people's machines. Like, the local functionality of Photoshop is replicated, but Adobe still has features like Generative Fill that depends on AI models that run on their hardware. Which I can't get mad at. It's unreasonable to expect companies to provide you with free electricity or use of capital spent on components.
  2. These evil companies somehow manage to get the government to send men with guns to your home, if you use software that is not bought from their 'goodboy store'. I repeat myself, but Fuck Copyright, All My Homies Hate Copyright.

Human activity is not even 1% responsible for temperatures changing, or the last 30 years of bullshit would have cooled things off tremendously.

Climate is cyclical.

England was sub-tropical in the Middle Ages. Grapes used to grow in Newfoundland. The earth’s axial tilt and orbit determine temperatures, not whether or not I turn my reading lamp on.

Congratulations on being brainwashed cattle. No wonder you work outside.

What a sad state software discussion boards are in right now, can't go two steps without someone loudly proclaiming "MMMMMM I LOVE BOT CUM IF YOU DON'T LOVE BOT CUM YOU ARE LE RETARDED LUDDITE MMMMM YUM YUM BOT CUM I AM REAL PROGRAMMER EAT BOT CUM PROMPT MMMMMM CUMMY CUMMY"
They act like Indians. If you dare >imply that their Chucky Cheese tokens are not all powerful, they WILL have to call you names and street shit. It's the only way they can regain lost izzat. Unintently, they are a form of lol cow that is native to the Kiwi Farms. I'm not going to name anyone, but we've all seen it even here on the 'Farms.
These people have lost their minds, and I'm just waiting for this nonsense to crash and burn so I can mock them over their ruined reputations.
I pry to saint Davis, his elephant, GodJesus and the Bear Conductor that we will be so lucky. If we are, remember who abandoned FOSS principles. They are no better than trannys. I'm sick of how almost no one in tech has any morals. Fuck all of them. Take all those nerds to the moon and spank them with moon rocks!
I can't locate the evidence right now, but Microsoft and Google fund those fucking freaks for this reason.
They actively work with and fund the Linux Foundation. This is public knowledge. Do you think they would give an org a mountain of shackles only to compete with them? Ever notice that the closer the programmer is to Big Tech money the less they say the world "freedom?"

And what is your preferred flavour of cum, then?
GNU/Spunk, of course.
UGHHHH YOU FUCKING FUCKS DON'T LIKE BOT CUM? MUST BE COMMUNISUM. PRETENDING THAT BOT CUM ISN'T DELICIOUS ISN'T GOING TO STOP THE PROUCTION OF THICKER BOT CUM SWEATY, THE RAPID ADVANCEMENT OF CUM PUMPS ARE PRODUCING STAGGERING RESULTS, UNLIKE YOUR UNCUMMED STALL-MAN, CHUD.

If only they were native here, they are ubiquitous across 4chan and many project IRCs, wading from place to place like the pacific garbage patch to DEMAND that you MUST add a pro-AI policy NOW NOW NOW or else you will be le outpaced and le left behind!!!!!11!!! I don't know if it's just me, but I despise this hyper-utilitarian poison everyone has collectively bottom-upped. A lot of FOSSworks are hobby projects that have SOVL, and as 'productive' as the cumbot may or may not be, it can't forge SOVL. I like things that move slow and are made by MAN.

This may be the gayest thing that has ever been posted to the Farms.

Also, stay mad (and obsolete), Jeet.

How I look at "vibecoders" when they describe the vibe of their Claude coded dildo thruster plowing and filling them with bot cum as they prompt the next batch of software that is going to own the libs or however saving the jeet white race works:

It's much more common that the locusts hopping from project to project demanding a CoC against transphobia are the same ones demanding a "NO LLM CONTRIBUTIONS" policy. SOVL is a non-issue unless you're unemployed and desperately need something to fill the empty hours of your life. I want software that works, and a tranny who makes 4 commits a year because he has to write every line of code by hand but also cannot as he has the sads 350 days of the year does not produce software that works.
