How did the tobacco industry get so maligned when the system is so obviously willing to rig itself to benefit a taxable vice?
(what you say makes sense; I'm legit curious how the fuck Philip Morris and friends pissed off everyone so hard as to nearly entirely bypass this indulgence granted to the spirits industry)
ETA: Also convicted drunk drivers should be shot. First offense, no exceptions.
Well, in terms of sheer lethality, smoking is significantly more pernicious than anything else. Globally, it accounts for 7.36 million deaths per year, compared to 1.29 million for alcohol, and 492,000 for illicit drugs. (U.S. numbers: tobacco: 480,000; alcohol: 178,000; drugs: 105,000.) (Source:

I don't know that the alcohol industry is more
indulged than the tobacco industry. Both are heavily regulated. The main difference is the tobacco industry has faced more legal liability over the years due to their well-documented history of lying and covering up the health risks associated with their products. The U.S. government saw no problem continuing to allow the sale of cigarettes and the collecting of the associated tax revenue. Their only dictates were things like warning labels, banning cigarette commercials on television and restricting where smokers were allowed to indulge (regulations alcohol is also subject to, although television ads are permitted at certain times of the day) . Fundamentally, tobacco just became unfashionable because society became more health-conscious, the social benefits associated with smoking were viewed as less valuable than those for alcohol, and there is the noxious impact of second-hand smoke.
Executing or forcing into rehab/prison those who become alcohol-dependent, get DUIs, or get hospitalized for binge drinking would eliminate a massive chunk of the alcohol industry's consumer base. Far more of the citizenry drinks than smokes. A cultural climate exists where people do not want to risk incarceration or execution, or their friends or family members face similar draconian punishment, because they decided to get behind the wheel after a night bar hopping, or they develop an alcohol problem. So, there is no incentive among the populace at large, the industry that profits from booze or the government sector, to establish harsh penalties for alcohol abuse.
