Damn, the anime sure makes the Fifth Emperor and his crew look intimidating.

But I don't know whats with all the filler flashbacks here. Why do we need a whole segment on Coby and Luffy's meet?

I loved the little intro they had about Luffy and his crew being at the forefront of the changing pirate era.

They're trying to create distance between the manga and the anime, but they don't have the luxury of doing fillers since that would fuck with the timeline (Early Wano is supposed to be happening at the same time as the Reverie), so this is what we're getting. Don't count against a Vivi flashback in the coming weeks too.

Sadly, this had the side effect of fucking up the flow of what should be one of the most epic parts of the series. (:_(

Hope they don't do much to flashback Dressrosa. I'd rather not be spoiled about details I've forgotten about UNTIL FUNIMATION GETS WITH IT AND STARTS DOING DVDS AGAIN.Now now now!

Another aspect of it is that they do too much episodes and don't rerun any of them-- this being the reason why they had those clip show episodes back at the beginning of Enies Lobby. They need new viewers to be brought up to speed/older viewers to remember what the background for some of this is.

I've thought about getting into One Piece in the past month or two but to be honest, the sheer number of episodes and manga chapters with no end in sight is kind of intimidating.

I mean, I was a huge Naruto fan back in the day but it dragged on for so long that I pretty much dropped out and avoided Shippuden entirely, and then skipped straight to Boruto (which I actually kind of enjoy unironically)

I will admit, I used to hate One Piece as a kid because of the atrocious 4Kids dub in the early 2000's, which was hands down the worst anime dub of that decade and is a contender for one of the worst anime dubs of all time. I mean, the 4Kids version of One Piece was so bad that it basically killed the trend of Westernizing anime completely (save for a few legacy titles like Digimon and Pokemon where a lot of the dub name changes are kept for nostalgia's sake)

However, the bits and pieces I saw of the Funimation dub was actually pretty neat, and when it came to the new Toonami in 2013, I was excited at first but then found out they were not starting from the beginning so I avoided it because I didn't want to get confused.

If I were to watch the One Piece anime from the start, where is it legally available for streaming? I'd prefer the Funimation dub, but I am open to the subbed version as well.

Today is Caesar Clown's birthday! Here's his pixiv tag, and here's his amazing character song:

He shares his birthday with Marguerite, Piiman, Mohmoo, and Yorki.

This break time sure has been particularly long. sigh

Today is Tamanegi's birthday!

It's also the Forest Boss and Gitsune (Fake Chopper)'s birthday.

Manga spoilers are in:

Chapter 939 Old Hyo doesn’t forget the way

Zoro reveals his identity, and Hiyori feel relieve as he’s as expected an allie of her older brother. Otoko is one of the few close friends who knew this secret.

The reason that Hiyori doesn’t get sent to the future is because in case she didn’t get to meet up with Momonosuke, the Kouzuki clan won’t died off.

The allies that Zoro doesn’t know of—Kawamatsu, Denjiro, Ashuradoji—Hiyori doesn’t know where they are as well.

Luffy and Hyo are fighting against Madilloman, user of the armadillo SMILE. Luffy looks like he’s not attacking, but he’s actually trying to use the technique that Rayleigh and Sentomaru used, that can blow the enemies away without touching them, he thinks with this he might even be able to crack Kaido’s scales.

Hyo, who realize what technique Luffy was trying to learn, demonstrate that technique and defeat Madilloman with it.

From @miish3lov
More spoilers:

  • Bepo and the others suffering critical injuries
  • Jinbie in the cover page
  • The chapter splits in two parts: one is about Zoro, Komurasaki and a flashback, the other is about Luffy and Hyo fight.
  • Kawamatsu is still foreshadowed but we can see a part of his hat andhis hat's pattern. (hopefully more detail in that later)
  • in the last page Hyo finishes alpaca man with a massive hit.

I don't know where you are, but if you're from the US, then Funimation's site should be a good start.

In case you're in the US and want to read the manga legally, then Viz's subscription service is probably a great idea as it gives you access to their entire portfolio. If you're ok with reading scanlations, then I recommend going with the colored scans (they're about 100 chapters behind tho).

(I know @Kari Kamiya watches the dub, so I'm tagging her in too just in case I missed something).

Agreed, it's been a while since we saw Luffy showing off. :sigh:

Lmao I pirated the dub, mostly, so I'm useless in this conversation :story:. We had some of the DVDs and that's how I got my start, but I just watched it on 9anime because it was super convenient at the time for them to go to the next episode without having to toggle out of full screen.

Do need to jump back into the manga, though. I'm just super picky about scanlation quality that I'm still in the middle of Drum Island, but I might jump into the colored pages. Might, if I don't cave and buy up those treasure trove box-sets first.

EDIT: Ooh, those are high quality scans. Colored pages it is, then, even though I dig the classic black-and-white.

If you ever decide to go sub instead of dub theres a group of fans that worked on the first 200+ or so episodes which is far better than the official sub imo.
Also IIrc Oda did mention that One Piece is 80% done (don’t quote me on that). My personal recommendation is to just go through the anime bit by bit and then switch over to reading the manga once you get to the fishman island arc. Good luck!! :)

  1. Which fansubbing group? Some of the older ones read like shit compared to now (the increase in actual competency vs decrease in weebism contributing to this)
  2. Don't quote Oda on that either.

I think he's talking about One Pace.

  1. I don't remember their name, all I can remember of the group is that they would add weird little effects to the subtitles whenever a character would shout out the name of their attack. I can get the name of it later once I have the chance though.
  2. Noted. God Bless Oda.

That could have been any of the ones from the last decade (Kaizoku-Fansubs, the short lived Geru Sama, etc), they all were kind of doing that.
